employment

on-campus International students may work on campus without applying to the INS for work authorization. Job listings for on-campus positions can be found in the Student Employment office. International students can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session but may work up to 40 hours per week during any vacation periods.

off-campus There are four options for legal employment off campus. All students are not eligible for all options. The following options are listed:

for F-1 students
› curricular practical training: allows an F-1 student to engage in the cooperative education (co-op) program.
› optional practical training: provides an opportunity for F-1 visa holders to gain up to one year of experience in their field of study. Students are allowed only one 12-month period during their studies.

for J-1 students
› academic training: can be used to certify a J&W co-op experience or for employment after a student's exchange program ends. The employment must be closely related to the field studied during the exchange program and cannot extend longer than the amount of time studied. For example, a student studies for three months, therefore academic training can be authorized for no more than three months.
