Frequently Asked Questions Is Community Service Learning (CSL) a graduation requirement? Yes, all J&W Day Division students at the Providence campus, except transfer students, must complete CSL in order to graduate. I am a transfer student. Do I have to complete CSL? No, if you are a transfer student who has transferred college level credit into J&W from another college or university, you do not have to complete CSL. If you have attended another institution but did not carry any credits over to J&W, you must complete CSL in order to earn your degree. In most cases, students who bring only AP credit to J&W are not considered transfer students and therefore are not exempt from CSL. If you have transferred to the Providence campus from another J&W campus, you should check with Student Academic Services to determine which campus graduation requirements apply to your degree program. Students should check with Student Academic Services at 401-598-1088 (Downcity campus) or 401-598-1140 (Harborside campus) to verify their status as a transfer student. I am staying at J&W for a bachelor's degree. Can I wait to complete my CSL in my junior or senior year? No, in order to receive your associate degree, you must complete CSL within your first two years at the University. Unfortunately, if you do not complete CSL before you should have received your associate degree, you run the risk of forfeiting your right to financial aid, standing in your program and your degree. How do I complete CSL? There are more than 80 professors at J&W who offer the CSL option in their courses. Check with your individual professors to see if they offer the CSL option in their courses. If your professor offers the CSL option in their course please come to the Feinstein Community Service Center during the first two weeks of term to register. The following internships have incorporated a CSL segment into the required rotations: culinary arts internship, food service management practicum, hotel internship, pastry arts internship and travel center practicum. Can I count service hours I completed in the past towards the graduation requirement? Unfortunately, no. Retroactive service cannot be accepted. I am involved in a campus organization that does a lot of community service. Does that count for my graduation requirement? No, the CSL graduation requirement must be completed through a course or internship. What is the difference between CSL and self-initiated student service? CSL has an academic component associated with the service experience. CSL seeks to give students a deeper understanding of service through structured training, learning, reflection and evaluation. Self-initiated student service is service outside of the formal academic requirement, and is a great way to meet new people, see new places, learn about possible careers and expand your resume. Once I have completed my CSL requirement, may I obtain a certificate for my portfolio? Yes, you may request a certificate at the Feinstein Center by completing a Certificate Request Form. |
