The English Department offers courses that prepare students for success, both in their college experience and in their future career, by providing students with a strong foundation in written and oral communication skills and critical thinking skills.

The courses offered in the English Department provide a strong background for freshmen students, whose writing, speaking, and research skills will have a direct effect on their academic success at the University.

Courses offered by the department include core writing courses which focus on nonfiction and rhetorical forms, a communications course which improves public speaking skills, and an introductory literature course which exposes students to both classical and contemporary literary works.

The department also offers honors level sections of the core classes as well as courses in technical writing, newswriting, travel writing, and food writing.

Each spring the English Department sponsors the Cassola Conference on Teaching Communication. This conference is dedicated to providing college and secondary school teachers of oral communication with a forum for exchanging ideas.

Note: Enrolled students may search for up-to-date course information via uconnect. A PDF version of the entire catalog is available by campus and year of entry on the Student Academic Services website.
