JWU Baseball Wraps Up 2009 Campaign With 8-2 Setback Against Roger Williams

May 6, 2009

East Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision against Roger Williams in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on.  The game was the final home contest for seniors John Kuschman (Glastonbury, Conn.), Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J.), Rich Fonseca (East Providence, R.I.), Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.), Justin Maldonado (South Burlington, Vt.), Bobby Gilbert (Florham Park, N.J.) and Ryan Morgan (Exeter, R.I.).

Roger Williams took the early lead when a two-run single by senior Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) put the Hawks up 2-0 in the top of the first.  RWU added to their lead in the top of the second when senior Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball.  An unearned run in the top of the third then gave the Hawks the 4-0 lead.  Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Teddy Katz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) plated junior Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.) to cut the lead to 4-1.  The visiting Hawks added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth en route to the 8-2 victory.

Junior Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in the win for Roger Williams while Lambert went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Hawks.  Garcia went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs for Johnson & Wales.

Morgan for Johnson & Wales, allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings of work while senior James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.) for Roger Williams, allowing one unearned run on five hits in six innings.

Johnson & Wales falls to 20-23 with the setback while Roger Williams improves to 21-20-1 for the season.
