Johnson & Wales Women's Basketball Falls To Norwich, 80-62 In GNAC Quarterfinals

February 23, 2010

Northfield, Vt. - The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team was eliminated from the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship with an 80-62 setback against Norwich at Andrews Hall on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales was led by senior Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists while freshman Allyson Dowen (Burlington, Vt.) added 14 points and five rebounds in the setback. Junior Morgan Wilson (LaGrangevile, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points and six boards for the Wildcats.

Ally Daniels led the way for Norwich with a game-high 28 points and six rebounds while Jess Jaggars had 20 points and 20 rebounds in the win for the Cadets. Tara Stevenson rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points and four assists for Norwich.

Norwich was in control to start the game, jumping out to a 19-5 lead on a jumper by Daniels less then five minutes into the game. Johnson & Wales responded with a 14-3 run, capped by a three pointer by Ramirez to cut the lead to 22-19 with 8:22 left in the first half. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get in the stanza, however as Norwich built their lead back to 10 before taking the 36-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Cadets extended their lead to 17 points in the opening stages of the second half when a three pointer by Daniels made the score 47-30. JWU trimmed the lead to 10 on a pair of free throws by Ramirez with 6:47 left, making the score 60-50. It would not be enough, however as Norwich took the 80-62 victory.

With the loss JWU wraps up the 2009-10 campaign with an 11-14 record while Norwich improves to 19-6. The Cadets will return to action on Thursday, February 25th when they host the semifinals of the conference
tournament.
