February 3, 2010
Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s basketball team dropped a 62-55 decision against Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.
Johnson & Wales was led by senior Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) with 19 points and 10 rebounds while junior Katurah Andrews (Hartford, Conn.) also tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards in the setback. Freshman Allyson Dowen (Burlington, Vt.) added nine points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats.
Freshman Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) paced Suffolk with a game-high 20 points and three rebounds while senior Laura Thompson (Kennebunk, Maine) notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 boards in the victory. Freshman Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) added 11 points, five boards and five assists for the Rams.
Johnson & Wales controlled the action early and held the 15-8 lead on a jumper by Andrews with 9:44 left in the first half half. The visiting Rams cut the lead to just one point (23-22) on a three pointer with Vienneau with just over a minute left on the clock. JWU took the 26-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. Suffolk was held to just 26.9% shooting from the field in the first half while JWU committed 20 turnovers in the stanza.
Suffolk took their first lead of the game early in the second half when a pair of free throws by Rogers with 17:47 remaining put the squad up 30-28. Suffolk led by as many as 10 in the second half, including a 45-35 advantage after a three pointer by Thompson with 11:15 left on the clock. Johnson & Wales then used an 11-2 run, capped by a three pointer by Ramirez to trim the lead to 47-46 with 7:26 left. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Suffolk held on for the 62-55 victory.
With the loss JWU falls to 9-11 and 4-3 in the GNAC while Suffolk improves to 11-8 overall, 5-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 6th when they travel to Mount Ida for a GNAC contest, starting at 1:00 p.m.
