November 15, 2009

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales women’s basketball team dropped a 72-51 decision to tip-off the 2009-10 season against Plymouth State in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) led the way for Plymouth State with a double-double, recording 25 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H.) added 23 points and nine boards for the Panthers in the victory.

Johnson & Wales senior Jennifer Moxley (Lakewood, Wash.) tallied a team-best 14 points and three rebounds while freshman Katurah Andrews (Hartford, Conn.) added 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Senior Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) had a team-high 13 boards to go with eight points and five blocks in the loss for the Wildcats.

Plymouth State jumped out to the early lead and held a 12-4 advantage after a layup by junior Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H.) with 13:38 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales responded with an 8-3 run, capped by a pair of free throws by freshman Allyson Dowen (Burlington, Vt.) with 7:49 remaining. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get in the first half, however as Plymouth State headed into the locker room with a 32-21 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth in the early stages of the second half with the Panthers holding a 40-31 lead with 13:06 left in the contest. PSU then used a 12-5 run, capped by a three-pointer by sophomore Michaela Galvin (Windham, N.H.) to take the 52-36 lead en route to the 72-51 victory.

With the win Plymouth State is 1-0 while Johnson & Wales falls to 0-1 for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, November 19thth when they travel to Salve Regina in a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
