JWU Men’s Soccer Falls To St. Joseph's of Maine, 3-0 In GNAC Quarterfinals

Standish, Maine – The No. 8 seeded Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team was eliminated from the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship with a 3-0 setback against top-seeded St. Joseph’s of Maine at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Doug MacCallum (Hingham, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and freshman Jack LaFreniere (Alton, N.H.) added a goal and an assist for St. Joseph’s.
The Monks controlled the action early and got on the board in the 13th minute when senior Andre Cushing (Hampden, Maine) fed a pass to MacCallum who blasted in a shot from five yards out for what would prove to be the game-winner. The Monks’ second goal came just 17 seconds later when LaFreniere put in a pass from junior Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) to give the squad the 2-0 advantage. St. Joseph’s capped off the scoring for the afternoon when MacCallum scored with an assist to LaFreniere with 3:54 remaining for the 3-0 victory.
Junior Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) had nine saves in the loss for JWU while senior Will Pike (Gorham, Maine) tallied five stops in the victory for St. Joseph’s
With the loss Johnson & Wales wraps up the 2009 campaign with a 2-17 mark while St. Joseph’s improves to 12-7-1. St. Joseph’s of Maine advances to the semifinals of the conference championship against either No. 4 Norwich or No.5 Albertus Magnus on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
