REQUIREMENTS

New Student Orientation
You may find that you have many unanswered questions or curiosities about this new chapter in your life.  It is for this reason that all new students will attend a New Student Orientation (NSO) session this summer.  Each NSO session provides an introduction to our campus, the resources available, what you can expect from your JWU experience, the opportunity to complete placement exams, and the people who are eagerly awaiting your arrival!

There are seven sessions for you to choose from and one additional session specifically for “Garnish Your Degree” students.  Attendance is mandatory for all incoming students – please be sure to register early to obtain your first session choice!  The number of students at each session is limited so you can meet in small groups and have your questions answered.

Health & Counseling Services
As a prerequisite for registration, Johnson & Wales University and the North Carolina Department of Health require that all new, full-time students — residents and commuters alike — submit documented proof of:

• A physical exam within the last year with physician's signature and parent/guardian signature for students under 18.
• Three (3) tetanus-diphtheria vaccines (DTP/DTaP/Td) with one Td or Tdapbooster dose within last 10 years (required).
• Negative PPD/CXR Tuberculosis test or chest x-ray within the last six (6) months (required).
• Two (2) MMRs: measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (required).
• Hepatitis B series and Chicken Pox Vaccine (required).
• Meningitis vaccine and Hepatitis A vaccine (strongly recommended*).

* Important Note:
"Recent studies show that certain college students, particularly freshmen living in dormitories, have a sixfold increased risk for meningitis... Cases of meningitis among teens and young adults 15-24 years of age — the age of most college students — have more than doubled since 1991...A vaccine is available against four strains of the bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis in the United States".

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in a Health Services hold being placed on your account. A hold prohibits you from registering/reinstating at the university. In addition, since you are no longer an active student attending the university on a full-time basis, you are not eligible to reside on campus and will lose your housing assignment. All documents must be submitted to Health Services before a hold will be removed.

Health Requirements & Forms

Academic Assessment
Johnson & Wales University requires all new students to participate in an Academic Assessment in the areas of math, reading comprehension, and sentence skills.  The results of all assessment activities will help generate an appropriate class schedule based on individual student skill levels and abilities.

Students MUST register for New Student Orientation and complete the Academic Assessment while there.
