You will be scheduled to take a few academic placement exams during New Student Orientation. With few exceptions (noted below), Johnson & Wales University requires all new students to undergo academic assessment in math, writing, and reading to assist with placement in general studies courses. In addition, business students will also need to complete testing required for their major. The scheduled testing times are as follows:
Day 1
10:30-12:00pm Math testing*
Day 2
8:50am to 10:15am Writing & Reading testing*
2:00pm to 4:00pm FIT 1000** - A computer proficiency test
required for all College of Business students (earning a passing grade
on this test will give you credit for Introduction to Computers, which
is the prerequisite for the FIT 1020 course).
*Exemptions from math, writing, and reading testing - Students who meet the following criteria are not required to complete math, reading, and/or writing testing:
**Exemptions from FIT 1000 – Students entering the College of Business who have transfer credits for Introduction to Computers (FIT 1000) do not need to take this proficiency test.
If you have a documented disability and are requesting testing accommodations,
you must forward your documentation at least two weeks prior to your scheduled
assessment to ensure that the appropriate accommodations can be arranged.
No accommodations will be provided without appropriate documentation or if
documentation is submitted on the day of assessment. Please contact the Center
