Bachelor's degree recipients will also wear an academic hood representing their higher level of education. The hood is black with blue, white, and golden yellow trim to signify the school colors and the academic department. The faculty and platform party will be wearing regalia representative of the degrees they possess. The president and other officials of the University will wear caps and gowns designed exclusively for Johnson & Wales University. The honorary degree recipients will wear the hood appropriate for the degrees being conferred upon them. cap & gown pick-up Cap and gown order forms are included in the commencement packets distributed to all eligible students in February through the bookstore. Please return the completed order form directly to the University Bookstore. Forms must be returned by March 17, 2006, to guarantee your gown for the ceremony. Caps and gowns may be picked up at the bookstore from Monday, May 8, through Friday, May 18, during normal bookstore hours. Any gowns not picked up ahead of time will be available at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center the morning of Commencement. academic attire You must wear the full academic dress (cap, gown and hood if applicable) appropriate for the degree you will receive. Attire worn with the gown may include: men suit or jacket and slacks, plain tie, shoes; women dress or skirt and blouse, shoes. Graduands should put on their caps and gowns before entering the auditorium. Staff will be on hand if you need assistance. Leave coats, valuables, and other personal items with a family member or at home. You will not be able to store any personal belongings in the auditorium area. how to wear academic dress The gown should be worn straight. Both the cap and gown should be worn at all times by women; men remove their caps for the National Anthem, the invocation and the benediction, but wear it at all other times throughout the ceremony. The tassel is to hang on the front right side of the cap. Graduates should be careful not to let the tassel interfere while photographs are being taken. bachelor of science recipients The hood should be placed over the shoulders. There should be no color visible at first. Once the hood is in place, unfold it slightly to expose the colors. Women may choose to fasten the hood at the shoulders with safety pins for a more secure placement. For men, the neckband of the hood should be placed over the tie. |
