Gender Equity Center

JWU Student Life Gender Equity Center Female Students PVDEstablished in 1997 as the Women’s Center, the Gender Equity Center’s primary goal is to increase awareness of gender issues and foster an environment of gender equality through programming and outreach.

Although the Center is located on the JWU Providence Campus, it serves as a resource for students, faculty, staff and parents across all four campuses.

Guiding Principles  

  • To provide a welcoming space that promotes a supportive and open-minded environment for the university community
  • To promote a feminist viewpoint, strive to achieve gender parity and celebrate individual markers of identity
  • To make resources related to women’s history and health, gender-based violence, sexual orientation and identity, and relevant activist organizations available to the university community 
  • To offer support services and referrals for survivors of sexual and relationship violence and acts of bias based on sexual orientation
  • To coordinate learning opportunities that enrich the academic experience and help develop critical thinking
  • To advocate for institutional consideration of programs, practices and/or policies to improve gender and sexual orientation equality

Resources We Offer
The Gender Equity Center director and student staff are available to talk one-on-one with students seeking support and assistance for a range of personal issues.

Our library features books, videos, resource files, brochures, videos and magazines for student use. We also have a referral lists for resources within the university and the community. Learn more about our services and resources.

In addition, our lounge is a relaxing environment to stop in to check your email, read, join a discussion group, pick up free safer sex supplies, or relax with a complimentary cup of coffee or tea. We look forward to welcoming you!

Work for Us
The center is staffed by a professional director and two student assistants, as well as work-study student staff and volunteers. Any JWU community member is welcome to volunteer. If you're eligible for work-study and are interested in working for us, talk to Student Employment or stop by our office.
