Gender Equity Center

img Stulife Multi-Culture 170x150Originally established in 1997 as the Women’s Center, the Gender Equity Center changed its name in 2009 to reflect its evolving mission to support and enhance the academic, professional and personal development of female, male and transgender students at JWU’s Providence Campus.

The Gender Equity Center is a:

  • place to hang out, meet friends and connect
  • resource for students, faculty and staff who are interested in gender-related issues
  • resource to find appropriate university and community supports
  • provider of social and educational programs
  • safe zone for the campus’ LGBTQ community

Our objective is to increase awareness of gender issues and foster an environment of gender equality. Through programming and outreach, we strive to create and support a more inclusive and equal campus environment.

For your convenience, we have two office locations. Our Downcity office is located on the first floor of Wales (formerly Plantations) Hall, next to Student Employment and across from Counseling, Health and Wellness. Our Harborside office is located in South Hall, Room 152, behind the lavender door.

Our lounge, located on the 1st floor of Wales Hall, is well-stocked with magazines to read, movies to watch, coffee and tea, computers and comfortable couches. Stop by any time.

The center is staffed by a professional director and two student assistants, as well as work-study students and volunteers. Anyone is welcome to volunteer in a variety of capacities. There are also a number of student-run clubs and organizations devoted to gender issues. Visit us during office hours to find out more.

If you're eligible for work-study and are interested in working for us, talk to Student Employment or stop by for more information.
