Application & Deadlines

More than 85% of the students at Johnson & Wales University receive some form of financial aid. To be considered for financial aid at JWU, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA is a federal process used to determine a family’s eligibility to receive financial aid, and every family, regardless of their financial means, should fill out this federal form. JWU awards financial aid based on information obtained from the FAFSA.

The completed FAFSA and all documentation, as requested, must be received by the university as soon as possible after January 1 to meet JWU, federal and state aid program deadlines and before the start of the academic year or term.

Information on typical length of study is referenced in the sections pertaining to Academic Standards and Satisfactory Academic Progress in the university catalogs.

Basic eligibility requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen (for most programs) with a valid Social Security number (SSN).
  • Be working toward a degree or certificate program of study and at least half-time.
  • Show that you’re qualified to obtain a postsecondary education:
    • Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
    • Meet other standards your state establishes that the federal government has approved.
  • Register (if you haven’t already) with the Selective Service, if you’re a male between the ages of 18 and 25.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress once enrolled.

Step 1 Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for you and your parents; the PIN is required to complete the FAFSA (and allows you to make corrections to your application).

Step 2 Collect the documents needed for the FAFSA (examples include income tax returns, W-2 forms and other records of income); review required documents. If your tax return is not ready, complete the FAFSA by estimating the tax information (corrections, as needed, can be made at a later time).

Step 3 Complete the FAFSA application; be sure to list JWU’s school code of 003404 on your application. Note: the university cannot determine your aid eligibility if this code is missing or the application is incomplete.

Step 4 The federal government will send to you a Student Aid Report (SAR), which displays the information you provided to the questions on the FAFSA. Review your SAR, and if necessary, make changes or corrections and submit your SAR for reprocessing.

Step 5 If you are selected for verification by either the U.S. Department of Education or the university, you will be asked to submit additional documents (i.e. federal tax return, verification document) before your financial aid award is finalized.
