JWU’s equine programs offer a variety of extracurricular activities including student dressage shows, schooling shows, seminars and clinics.
The university hosts seminars and career nights with nationally recognized speakers from the equine industry. A well-established clinic program rounds out your educational experiences through participation and observation of various teaching and training techniques.
Clinicians such as Sybille Crafts, Mark Weissbecker, Sarah Geikie, Shannon Dueck and Greg Prince have participated in this program.
The New England Dressage Association has chosen JWU’s equine facility to host its educational symposium program with Olympic medalists Anky van Grunsven, Ulla Salzgeber and Lisa Wilcox. Equestrian Education Systems has worked with JWU to offer Eckart Meyner’s BALIMO (Balance In Motion) training symposiums and instructor workshops at the university. The BALIMO exercise and teaching program are utilized in our riding classes. JWU participates in equine sports through two distinct competitive teams:
The IHSA team competes in the hunter-seat equitation team throughout New England and hosts an annual show at JWU’s Center for Equine Studies.
As a charter member of the IDA, the university hosts two competitions yearly and travels regionally to compete. JWU is president college for Northeast Region A. The university's dressage team has won numerous regional and national awards and has been represented at every national championship by team members.
JWU also participates in events through several combined tests held at the Equine Center. You’ll have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge through selected field trips, the highlight of which is the annual upstate New York breeding farms trip. Our Equine Club provides you with social and recreational equine opportunities.
