When Kathleen Gorman called JWU alumni Rob Arel ’05 and Kevin Belmont ’04 for design help, she wasn’t expecting much. Gorman needed a logo for the Rhode Island’s Food Stamp Outreach Program. She went to several design companies, hoping to find a designer willing to work at an affordable rate. But she never expected anyone to do the job for free. Free Graphic Design for Nonprofit Yet that’s exactly what Rob and Kevin offered to do when they submitted their bid. The owners of Black Door Creative, a New England-based brand identity design firm, told her they would design the logo at no charge. “They were so genuinely interested in doing this because of the meaning of the work,” says Gorman. “They insisted they really wanted to do it for free!” “We decided to just donate the logo as a way to give back,” Rob explains. Building Business through Pro Bono Work Rob and Kevin often do pro bono work for nonprofit organizations. Sometimes they even provide free services to small companies, if they are really in need of help. “It’s also a good way to build relationships,” Rob adds. Their innovative approach has gained national clients and projects in Boston and Providence, as well as Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. And they have in a new fan in Gorman. “We love the logo and we’re so happy with it,” she says. “We use it on everything. It’s just great.”
