In February 2008, JWU’s Providence Campus hosted the 7th Annual Intra-Collegiate Culinary Competition. The American Culinary Federation (ACF) approved competition brought together culinary and pastry teams comprised of students from all four JWU campuses to compete. The Denver Culinary Team of David Harvy, Jeff Dietzler, Joe Dicapo, Isaac Hanvey, and Josh Shnyder, and coached by Brian Hubner, placed first in the competition.
The Denver Pastry Team placed third in their division. The achievement was a great success, considering the numerous weather delays and the last minute replacement for Denver’s Katherine McCammon with the Providence Campus' Eunyong Lee. Kingsley Fuller and Jeff Kenser, the remaining Pastry Team members, worked very well with the alternate and came away with the bronze medal. Coaches of the Pastry Division participants included Bernhard Schrag and Robert Meitzer.
The performance demonstrated is a reflection of the talent and skills of the JWU students, and furthermore, to the delivery of the curriculum. This was further solidified by remarks made by the lead judge, Chef Daniel Scanell, Hon '06, CMC, member of the US National Olympic Team and JWU alumnus.
Said Scanell, “The students performed exceptionally well, which reflects the high standard and seamless quality of education throughout the culinary programs at Johnson & Wales University.”
