Hell's Kitchen Winner Built Unbreakable Foundation at JWU

Johnson & Wales University alum Rahman "Rock" Harper discovered his love of cooking in his early teens.

He soon became obsessed with the challenge of running a restaurant kitchen, and decided that this would be his career. So he made it happen at JWU.

Winning Hell's Kitchen
Before his newfound stardom, Rock had worked as executive chef of B.Smith’s Restaurant in New York City.

He had also worked at such award winning restaurants as Café Calliope, Burke Station Restaurant, Planet Hollywood and BET on Jazz Restaurant.

But his life changed when he was cast in, and eventually won, the third season of the FOX reality show Hell’s Kitchen, featuring world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay.

Culinary Lessons from JWU
Marvin Woods, Anthony Bourdain, Rick Tramonto and of course, Ramsay, all gave Rock great insight into being successful. But he learned some of his most important lessons at JWU.

“I tell my cooks all the time about having a base and structure," Rock says. "Punctuality, professionalism, organization, sanitation, determination, persistence and many other things I learned at JWU. I use them every day," says Rock.

“You have to have a great base and then you can build on it. Create your strong, unbreakable foundation and you will never fail. Not just in my field," he says. "It's the same in life.”
