Chef Walter Ellerbe began his culinary career early in childhood by working in his neighborhood restaurant as a dishwasher and prep cook. It was this exposure that fostered his desire to work in the field of culinary arts.
Chef Ellerbe's passion for food led him to pursue a more formal degree and receive more hands-on experience. He decided to attend the Norfolk Campus, where he earned a degree in Culinary Arts, and was noted for several scholastic achievements including the Silver Key Award for academic achievement.
"This profession is a part of me," says Ellerbe, "I am very passionate about what I do. I create from my soul. Even if I never received a dollar for what I have chosen for myself, I would still remain just as I am."
Today, Chef Ellerbe puts the skills he learned at JWU to the test as the president & CEO of Ellerbe Enterprises, Inc. and Tempations Restaurant Group, LLC. In this capacity, Chef Walter works as the executive chef and culinary consultant to the company. Chef Ellerbe was the former chef and co-owner of two award-winning restaurants in the Virginia Beach area. With plans on pursuing an additional JWU degree in Food Science and a minor in Culinary Nutrition, he continues to demonstrate his passion for food and education.
Ellerbe currently serves as president for the Alumni Council, president of the Norfolk (Tidewater) Alumni Chapter, and serves as an adjunct culinary instructor at the Tidewater Community College.
