As a prerequisite for registration, Johnson & Wales University requires the following:
Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in a Health Services hold being placed on your account. This will prohibit you from registering for classes or reinstating at the university. In addition, since you will no longer be considered an active, full-time student, your housing assignment may be in jeopardy. All documents must be submitted to Health & Counseling Services before a hold can be removed.
Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) All registered, undergraduate day students, both domestic and international, all students enrolled in the physician assistant degree program, and all international graduate/doctoral students attending JWU are required to have health insurance coverage that is accepted in the United States (and the state in which the student attends class).
All students who are required to have health insurance are initially enrolled in and charged for SHIP.
If you have health insurance coverage through another means (ie, a parent’s health insurance or an employer program), you can opt out of SHIP by completing University Health Plan’s online waiver to demonstrate proof of coverage.
Important note: Before waiving SHIP, be sure that your current health insurance plan is accepted in the state in which you attend class and fully covers all your medical needs.
You must submit a new waiver form each academic year. Students who are required to have health insurance and do not waive the JWU plan will be charged for it.
SHIP is serviced by University Health Plans and underwritten by United Healthcare. University Health Plans’ website contains a full summary of benefits, waiver deadlines and contact information. Get answers to commonly-asked questions about SHIP (212K PDF) or view a coverage summary (200K PDF).
