Culinary Competitions

At JWU you'll have the opportunity to participate in regional, national and international competitions such as those offered by the prestigious American Culinary Federation (ACF). Watch a video of University Dean of Culinary Education, Karl Guggenmos, discuss the competitions that allow you to test your skills.

Current Competitions
Throughout the year, some of the world's leading food service companies offer culinary and recipe competitions for students on campus. These are usually limited to the use of a specific ingredient; winners are granted cash prizes. Competitions, dates and rules are posted on campus.

Ocean State Homebrew Competition
The first annual Ocean State Homebrew Competition (OSHC), a statewide competition is for homebrewers of fine beers, ciders and meads, took place in April at the Harborside Campus' Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence.

Intra-Campus Culinary Competition (ICC)
As part of this annual competition hosted at one of JWU's four campuses, teams of current culinary students test their culinary skills against their peers before competing nationally and overseas.

IKA/Culinary Olympics
A competition held every four years in Erfurt, Germany, the IKA/Culinary Olympics represents the most prestigious culinary competition in the world. Due to the international exposure and skills required, the IKA/Culinary Olympics is recommended for junior and senior level students and is open to students from all of our campuses. During the 2008 Olympics, JWU's faculty-student team took four medals: one gold, two silver and a bronze.
