FIT1000: Software Application Skills Study Guide for Computer Proficiency Testing

The Software Application Skills section of the test will assess your knowledge in three applications: word-processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software. You will work in a simulated Microsoft Office 2007 environment and may be asked to demonstrate the skills shown below.

Presentation Software Skills may include but are not limited to:

  • Using common elements such as formatting, editing, bullets and numbering, etc.
  • Opening, editing and saving a presentation
  • Adding and modifying a slide to a presentation (new slides as well as slides from existing presentations)
  • Formatting using Quick Styles
  • Applying different slide layouts, animation, transition, sound, graphics
  • Rearranging slides
  • Adding speaker notes to a slide
  • Adding hyperlinks to a slide
  • Adding and modifying a table, graphic, video, etc., to a slide
  • Modifying headers or footers
  • Preparing a presentation and rehearse for delivery
  • Printing presentation as slides or outline or handout
  • Printing options

Word-Processing Skills include but are not limited to:

  • Saving a document under a new name
  • Applying formatting such as drop caps, text wrapping, use themes, use format painter
  • Modifying paragraph formats such as various tabs, line spacing, and alignment
  • Modifying page setup options such as page orientation and margins
  • Creating and modifying a table, columns and charts
  • Inserting and modifying graphics
  • Printing a document or specified pages of a document
  • Replacing text
  • Use of reference tools such as table of contents, citations, headers and footers, page numbering, references and captions
  • Working with templates

Spreadsheet Software Skills:

  • Entering and editing cell content
  • Selecting adjacent and non-adjacent cells
  • Inserting and deleting rows and columns
  • Basic functions: MIN, MAX, SUM, AVERAGE, TODAY, NOW
  • Basic formulas (with relative cell references)
  • Showing formula view
  • Creating series
  • Setting page set-up options and printing
  • Copying formulas
  • Using the fill handle to continue a series
  • Basic formatting including cell styles, borders, shading, cell alignment, merging & centering, row and column heights and widths, formatting numbers and dates

The Concept section of the test will consist of multiple choice questions related to the following topics:
