North Miami Campus Honored for Commitment to Improving Public Education
On April 4, Johnson & Wales University’s North Miami Campus was honored as an Exemplary Dade Partner by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Dr. Alan Seidman, chair of the Hospitality College, accepted the award on behalf of the North Miami Campus.
Nominated by W.J. Bryan Elementary School, JWU was a finalist in the Schoolwide Honorees Category for its overall contribution to educational excellence and student achievement. “This award demonstrates that we care about the issues facing the city of North Miami and are committed to making it better,” said Loreen Chant ’89, president of the North Miami Campus. “It is important that our students understand the importance of community service and civic involvement. The best way to do that is to lead by example and Dr. Seidman is doing just that.”
Dr. Seidman has been a volunteer with the local public schools for the past nine years, having begun as a reader to students and currently serving on the Educational Excellence School Advisory Council. In addition, Seidman assists in organizing career day for the local public schools.
Through the Big Chef, Little Chef program, North Miami Campus also collaborates on a regular basis with W.J. Bryan Elementary. JWU student volunteers invite the school's students to spend the day touring the campus.
