Before coming to Johnson & Wales University, Brian Mooney taught environmental science, biology, food sanitation and safety, and chemistry at several institutions including Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, University of South Carolina, and The Art Institute in Charlotte.

Mooney has authored several books, numerous articles and a university-level online course in environmental science, now in use at more than 25 institutions. In addition, he regularly writes, reviews and edits science textbooks for several major publishers. 

A regional fellow of the Dolan DNA Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY), Mooney is also chairman of the Bible and Modern Culture Section, American Academy of Religion (Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion); he is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and The William James Society.
