Driver's License or State ID

To secure a driver’s license or state ID, you need the following:

  • A valid passport containing your I-94 card
  • A valid social security card or denial letter from SSA
  • A SEVIS I-20
  • A Status Letter from Student Academic Services (which will also show your current address)
  • A valid JWU student ID
  • Valid proof of address
  • Acceptable proof of address can be a letter from the university, your bank or a utility bill with your name and address
  • $6.50 to take the written exam

Once you pass the written exam, the DMV will schedule a road test within three months. Keep your test card because it also serves as your driving permit. The license costs $31.50.

For more information about how to set up a road test, download How to obtain a Driver's License or State ID (149K) or contact the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
