Meet the StaffShelley Stephenson, dean of international programs & development, 401-598-1013. As dean, Shelley Stephenson works to foster and develop a strong international presence on campus. Shelley received her MA and PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, and holds a BA in East Asian Studies from Wesleyan University. She lived abroad for much of her earlier life in Indonesia, China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. She speaks Chinese and has studied several other languages including Japanese, Indonesian, French, Spanish and Welsh.
Katie Gilbertson, director of immigration affairs, 401-598-1787. With over 15 years of experience in the field of international education, Katie Gilbertson began working with international students running a home-stay program with over 150 families and teaching English at Wisconsin English Second Language Institute. Traveling, living and working in over 20 countries on five continents, Katie possesses a wealth of experience in understanding various cultures and customs of her students. She has a Master’s degree from the School for International Training.
Katherine Zmed, international student advisor, Harborside Campus, 401-598-4677. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Katherine earned her Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from DePaul University. As an undergraduate, she spent time abroad in both Germany and Krakow, Poland. She returned to Krakow for her graduate studies at the Jagiellonian University, and holds a Master’s degree in Central and East European Studies.
Elaine Petronio, international student housing coordinator, 401-598-1786. Elaine started the International Housing Department in 1993 and now assists international students in finding housing once they arrive. She looks forward to helping all new students find comfortable homes and to help them adjust to the American life. She holds a degree in nursing.
Joanne Yen Gilbert, international student advisor, Downcity Campus, 401-598-2390. Joanne works primarily with ESL students to help them understand immigration policies and help them to adapt to the US culture, JWU and the larger Providence community. Joanne earned her Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management and Master’s in Global Business Management at Johnson & Wales University. She is originally from Malaysia and speaks 4 different languages: English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay.
Alison Howard-Yilmaz, international student advisor, Downcity Campus, 401-598-4735. Alison is originally from Massachusetts and went to undergraduate and graduate school at Boston University where she majored in Political Science. While at Boston University, she studied in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. After graduating, she spent two years in the US Peace Corps, working in Kyrgyzstan, where she assisted local women's NGOs dedicated to sustainable economic development through the promotion of cultural handicrafts. Alison worked previously as an International Student Advisor at JWU and has just returned after taking an ESL program in Boston.
Colby Yeaton, international student advisor, 401-598-1729. Originally from Saratoga Springs, NY, Colby earned his Bachelor’s degree in International Studies at Endicott College, and spent time abroad in the UK and Italy. After completing his undergraduate degree Colby worked in adventure tourism in New Mexico and Colorado. After two years working in the southwest he earned his Master’s degree in International Education at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont and at Xiamen University of Technology in Xiamen, Fujian, China. Colby speaks Mandarin Chinese.
