Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Students who submit proof of English proficiency may go directly into regular academic course work.
Acceptable proof of English proficiency may include one of the following comparable English proficiency examinations:• PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English): minimum score of 53• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 80 IBT - internet based test • TOEFL score of 550 PPT - pen/paper test• IELTS (Cambridge), Band 6.5• City & Guilds Pitman: Higher Intermediate or Expert Level • The London Tests of English LTE, Level 4 (Advanced) • MELAB (Michigan English Language Battery): 77 • STEP Eiken (Society for Testing English Proficiency): Grade 1 • Completion of English language school (ELS): Level 112 (Intensive) Individual section scores must also meet minimum score requirements. JWU also reserves the right to require ESL classes to increase proficiency in a particular area, regardless of total test scores.
Other English examination results will also be reviewed, and experience studying in the English language will be taken into consideration. Please refer to the Providence undergraduate catalog for additional TOEFL requirements.Placement TestingEnglish language placement testing for new ESL students will be given before the start of each term. JWU uses scores from this test to place students into the appropriate level of ESL.
ESL ServicesIf you require English as a Second Language (ESL) services, the English Language Institute at our Providence Campus offers English classes at three proficiency levels- Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.Three 11-week English language programs are offered during the academic year (September-May), as well as during an 8-week summer program. Courses are designed to improve your English-language skills; social and cultural experiences are designed to assist with your cultural transition.
