Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Students who submit proof of English proficiency may go directly into regular academic course work.
Acceptable proof of English proficiency may include one of the following comparable English proficiency examinations:
Individual section scores must also meet minimum score requirements. JWU also reserves the right to require ESL classes to increase proficiency in a particular area, regardless of total test scores.
Other English examination results will also be reviewed, and experience studying in the English language will be taken into consideration. Please refer to the Providence undergraduate catalog for additional TOEFL requirements.
English language placement testing for new ESL students will be given
before the start of each term. JWU uses scores from this test to place
students into the appropriate level of ESL.
ESL ServicesIf you require English as a Second Language (ESL) services, the English Language Institute at our Providence Campus offers courses in reading, writing, conversation and grammar. These courses are available to accepted and currently enrolled JWU students.
Three 11-week English language programs are offered during the academic year (September-May), as well as during an 8-week summer program. Courses are designed to improve your English-language skills; social and cultural experiences are designed to assist with your cultural transition. Once you complete these courses, you’ll transition right into regular academic course work for your chosen major.
Placement testing is offered before classes start. Review ESL testing dates.
Enrolled students may search for up-to-date course information via jwuLink.
