Grants

Grants are gift assistance awarded to qualified students who complete the FAFSA and demonstrate exceptional financial need. With the exception of the Johnson & Wales Grant, the following programs are federally sponsored. Review state aid programs for grant and scholarship opportunities in your state.

Johnson & Wales Grant

• Awarded to students based on the annual financial aid awarding process and the student's financial need.

Federal Pell Grant

• Awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need.
• Awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or graduate degree.
• Amounts can change yearly; the maximum award for the 2009-10 award year was $5,350.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

• Awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need.
• Federal Pell Grant recipients receive priority for SEOG awards.
• SEOG awards range from $100 to $600 per academic year.
• Unlike Pell Grants, the amount of SEOG you receive depends not only on your financial need but also on the amount of other aid you get and the availability of funds at JWU.
• JWU receives a certain amount of SEOG funds each year from the US Department of Education; when all of those funds have been disbursed for that award year, no more SEOG awards can be made for that year.
• It’s important to complete the FAFSA early to be considered for these funds; not everyone who qualifies for an SEOG might get one.
