Graduate Application & Documentation

To apply to Johnson & Wales University’s graduate programs, choose one of these options:

Transcripts
Original, official transcripts (mark sheets) are required and must be received in a sealed envelope.

  • MAT, MEd & EdD programs: Transcripts must be received in a sealed envelope directly from the institution
  • International documents ONLY: Original or notarized (certified) copies are acceptable

If you completed your undergraduate degree at JWU, you do not need to submit an official transcript. Graduate School Admissions will request this on your behalf.

Letters of Recommendation
You may use the online personal reference form (40K PDF).

  • MAT program: 2 letters required from individuals qualified to acknowledge applicant’s potential as a teacher
  • MBA program: 2 letters required from individuals qualified to acknowledge the applicant’s potential for successful completion of the graduate program
  • EdD program: 3 letters required; 2 must be from professional educators (copies/emails/faxes are acceptable)

Statement of Purpose
Not required for MEd or MAT programs.

  • MBA program: Describing, in 500 words or less, reasons for selecting program.  Undergraduate major, current position’s level of responsibility and reputation of undergrad institution are considered as well
  • EdD program: Statement should be approximately 1,500 words in printed form and also include your scholarship abilities, professional experience, career goals, learning style preferences, and potential contributions to the program

Scholarships for Master’s Programs
You could qualify for a merit-based scholarship. MBA/MS program scholarships are awarded to students who maintain full-time status (9 quarter credits total per term) and reflect an ability to excel in their studies. Submit the scholarship form (35K PDF) with your admission application.

International Students
International students living outside the United States should follow these application deadlines: 

  • Fall (September) term: June 30
  • Winter (December) term: October 10 
  • Spring (March) term: January 10 
  • Summer (June) term: April 10

International students must also submit:

  • Declaration & Certification of Financial Support (120K PDF)
  • Certified bank statement with a minimum balance of $27,156 USD (US dollars), dated within 3 months of submitting your application
  • Copy of your current passport’s biographical section (name, date of birth, country of issuance) 
  • Official test scores: minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL or a 6.5 on the IELTS

Students will be placed in the English as a Second Language program if the minimum TOEFL score is not submitted.

Program-Specific Admissions Requirements

MBA Programs Applicants must meet these requirements:

One-Year MBA (Summer start ONLY)

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Undergraduate degree in business or in a business-related program (e.g., hospitality)

General MBA, MBA with Hospitality Concentration, MBA with Accounting Concentration

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum GPA of 2.85

MBA with Information Technology (IT) Concentration 

  • Undergraduate degree in information technology OR a BS and 5 years of information technology experience
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

MBA with Enhanced Accounting Track

  • MBA and CPA preparation classes combined
  • Accounting bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2

4+1 BS/MBA

  • Enrollment in 1 graduate course per term for 3 terms at no additional charge
  • Senior status in a JWU BS undergraduate degree program in either business or hospitality program
  • Full-time traditional day school student
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Grade of “B” or better in undergraduate equivalents of ALL of the following graduate foundation courses: ECON5000 = ECON2002 or 3040 or 1901; FISV5000 = ACCT1002 or 1012 or 1022; MATH5000 = MATH2001; MGMT5000 = MGMT1001 or HOSP4060

MS in Criminal Justice Management Fall Start ONLY

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or business
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

4+1 BS/MS in Criminal Justice (Fall Start ONLY)

  • Enrollment in one graduate course per term for three terms at no additional charge
  • Senior status in a JWU BS undergraduate degree program in either criminal justice or a business-related field (with department chair approval)
  • Full-time traditional day school student
  • Minimum GPA of 2.85

MAT in Teacher Education Fall Start ONLY

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 with B or better in appropriate content course work, dependent upon chosen concentration
  • If GPA is 3.0 or below, submit Praxis I (or equivalent) test scores that meet current state/program requirements (minimum Praxis I scores of 179 in Reading and Math and 177 in Writing, or a minimum combined SAT score of 1150 with no score less than 530). Food Service Noncertification option applicants require a minimum Praxis I score of 170 in each section (math/reading/writing)
  • Interview with MAT staff, including an on-demand writing sample
  • Criminal background check, as required by Rhode Island general laws

MEd in Teaching and Learning Fall Start ONLY

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75 from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Practicing teacher with documentation of employment in a teaching situation in K–16

EdD in Educational Leadership Fall Start ONLY

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum GPA of 3.25 for all post-baccalaureate studies
  • $200 application fee; if admitted, a $300 nonrefundable deposit is due within 21 days of receiving the acceptance
  • Interview with faculty panel
  • Official test scores from GRE or comparable exam approved by the program director
