Evan's not surprised that Johnson & Wales University students won more Hatch Awards than any other college in 2010.
The awards honor the most creative work in New England’s marketing and communications industries. This is the first year JWU entered in the student category.
Evan, a senior, won 12 silver bowls. And he credits JWU’s award-winning Ad Team for getting them there. “I’d recommend the team to any students who want to better their portfolio," Evan says. The team gives you experience before you graduate, preparing youfor work at an agency. "It worked for me,” Evan adds, laughing. “I got some awards, and a job!” Award-winning Campaign Evan’s Don’t Text and Drive billboard campaign started as a project at Providence ad agency Duffy & Shanley, where he did his internship last fall.
“I came up with some ideas when Rhode Island passed the law against texting, and I presented a brief to my creative director,” Evan says. “I just kept working on it.” “That’s what I tell my Ad Team students,” says his professor, Tom Monahan. “Evan worked on this and worked on this, until it was perfect. That's what you need to do in this industry.” Arnold Boston JobEvan was hired as a copy writer at Arnold Boston, one of nation's top ad agencies.
“If I was just working on my own, I never would have even got the internship, let alone the job,” he says. “I owe this to the Ad Team, and my professors at JWU.” Although he's proud of his student, Prof. Monahan says he’s not surprised. “Duffy & Shanley deserves a lot of credit. They gave this project to a college student. But then, who knows more about texting than a college student?”
