JWU Alum Named One of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs 2012

Food and Wine Best New Chef 2012 Karen Nicolas '95Karen Nicolas '95, executive chef of Washington, DC’s Equinox, has been named one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs in America 2012.

Not Afraid to Redefine a Classic
The magazine praises Nicolas for “creatively shaking up one of DC’s iconic power restaurants.”

But for Nicolas, it’s about simply doing what she does every day. As she told The Washingtonian, “[Equinox] is the ideal restaurant that I've always wanted to run — intimate, not too big, but not too small at the same time. And [chef-owner Todd Gray’s] food style is very similar to mine, so putting my take on [the menu] has been an easy transition.”

Honoring Young, Driven Chefs
Food & Wine’s annual award recognizes up-and-coming chefs who’ve made a big impact in a short time. (All have been running a kitchen for 5 years or fewer.)

“It’s such a delight to honor these incredible chefs,” says editor-in-chief Dana Cowin. “They’ve created truly pilgrimage-worthy restaurants.”

Nicolas joins a growing list of JWU alums who have been profiled by Food & Wine, including Husk’s Sean Brock, Manresa’s David Kinch and “Top Chef” Season 7 winner Kevin Sbraga.
