JWU Charlotte : Volunteering Tips for Student Clubs

Volunteering Tips for Student Clubs

Before you reach out to any particular nonprofits, you want to make sure that you have a plan in place to develop long-term community relationships that are in line with your overall goals. Start by answering the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of your club?
  • What are you trying to accomplish?
  • Are there nonprofit agencies that share a similar goal or that would complement your goal?

Your group will also want to assess the value of your resources, as well as what kind of a commitment you’re able to make:

  • What career skills, experiences or interests do your members have? What community agencies need those skills?
  • Listen to your members: What are you interested in or excited about? What are your limitations in terms of time, commitment level, transportation, etc.?
  • Make a realistic commitment: Research the agency and its volunteer needs. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to develop your idea.
  • Details, details, details! Publicize the event (and get firm confirmation from your members if you're in a club). Communicate with the site supervisor. Be professional and responsible; you are representing JWU and your club.

And remember: follow through. Make sure you keep your commitments. The agencies are depending on you!
