Gender Equity Center Sexual Assault Support Services

Students who wish to discuss a situation in complete confidence should notify only JWU Counseling Services or off-campus confidential resources.

Please be aware that all JWU employees, including professional staff, faculty, and certain student staff (such as Resident Assistants) have limited confidentiality and must report cases of sexual misconduct to Safety & Security.

Gauging Consent
Consensual sexual activity happens when each partner willingly chooses to participate through words, attitudes or actions. Open communication about desires and expectations is critical to obtain and give consent. The full JWU Sexual Assault policy can be found in the North Miami Campus Student Handbook.

Red: Signs You Should Stop

  • You and your partner are too drunk or high to give consent.
  • Your partner is asleep or passed out.
  • Your partner says ‘no’ or indicates that s/he wants to stop.

Yellow: Signs you should pause and talk

  • You feel like you are getting mixed signals.
  • Your partner has not indicated what s/he is okay with.
  • Your partner stops or is not responsive.

Green: Keep communicating

  • Everyone comes to a mutual decision about what is happening.
  • Everyone clearly expresses their comfort with the situation.
  • You feel your decision will be respected if you change your mind.

Important Time Frames
In the event of an assault, keep in mind the following time frames for emergency contraception, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and evidence collection:

  • Three days (up to 72 hours) from incident for emergency contraception and some potential STI prevention
  • Four days (up to 96 hours) from incident for evidence collection (only available at hospital emergency departments)
