JWU Providence : Prospective and New Students

Prospective and New Students

Can I change my room assignment now? Room assignments cannot be changed prior to move-in.

Can I change my room after I arrive? Beginning on the first day of classes, you can request a new room assignment in one of two ways:

  1. Move within the same hall. See your resident director to be placed on your hall’s room relocation list.
  2. Move to a different hall. Fill out a hall relocation request here.

Room changes do not occur earlier than October; however, moves could take longer as they are dependent upon available space. We will attempt to honor room/hall change requests as space allows, but they cannot be guaranteed.

After I arrive, can I just switch rooms with another person if they want to move, too? Room swaps cannot be permitted. This includes switching bedrooms in suite-style rooms or apartments (Renaissance, Snowden, and Harborside Village). By completing room changes through our staff, we ensure that all parties are comfortable with the move; it also preserves the accuracy of our housing records for security reasons. If you make an unauthorized room change, you’ll be required to return to your originally assigned room; you will be fined a $150 administrative charge, and could face additional sanctions.

Can I move in early? For staffing and security reasons, we do not allow students to arrive before their assigned move-in day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

I am in a triple, but there are only 2 people assigned to my room. Does that mean I will have extra space in my room? All of our rooms’ spaces will be filled before classes begin or directly after. If you have an empty space in your room, please keep it available for a new roommate to move in.

Can I ship my belongings ahead of time? We do not staff the residence halls until students arrive, so mail will not be accepted prior to move-in weekend. If your packages or mail are sent ahead of time they will be returned. Please plan for any and all shipments to arrive after you have moved into the residence hall.

How do I get a microfridge for my room? A microfridge will be in your room when you arrive.* If you and your roommates have not made payment arrangements with the Microfridge Company to keep the Microfridge within the first 2 weeks of class, the company will remove it from your room at that time. To obtain pricing information and make rental arrangements, please contact College Refrigerators at 1-800-577-8041.

*Microfridges are located only in traditional halls. Renaissance Hall suites have full-sized kitchens; therefore, Microfridges are prohibited.

What should I bring with me? See our itemized list of recommended items to bring depending on your room type.

What’s in my room? The university provides each resident with a twin extra long bed (regular twin sheets will fit), a desk and chair, dresser, and closet space. (Harborside Village residents receive a full size bed.)

What’s in my hall? Each hall has areas reserved for student use. Such areas include study rooms, TV lounges, billiards lounges, laundry rooms, and other similar locations. The areas are furnished and equipped for use by all members of the community.

Where can I do laundry? All halls have laundry rooms. Renaissance is currently the only coin-operated facility; all other halls use a card operated system. Cards can be purchased in the lobby of all resident halls for $5. The card is "charged" by the same machines. You may put up to $99 on a card. Each card is re-loadable and should be treated as cash. Machines only accept $5, $10 and $20 dollar bills.

What does my meal plan include? On-campus residents have access to their meal plan Sunday through Saturday during the academic year. Participating residence hall students also have a total of 15 meals per week to use any day of the week (for up to three meals a day). In addition, participating students have 5 flex meals per term to use any way they wish.

Is there a nurse or doctor on campus? There are two Health Services offices, serving both resident and commuter students. There is no charge for treatment, and many medications are dispensed free of charge. Students may use either Health Services facility, and when necessary, transportation to one office or the other may be arranged for a student by Health Services staff. The Downcity Health Services Office (401-598-1104) is located in the Wales Hall. The Harborside Health Services Office (401-598-1151) is on the first floor of the Student Services Complex.

In the event of a medical emergency, dial (9) 911 first for emergency assistance; then contact Campus Safety & Security at 401-598-1103. For more info, contact Health Services, or see your RA or RD.

Is there transportation? Yes. Your valid JWU ID allows you to use all JWU shuttles and buses, as well as the statewide public transit system (RIPTA), free of charge.

JWU bus schedules will be available at the front desk of your residence hall when you arrive. For more info, contact Transportation.

Can I park on campus? Parking permits for day school students are handled solely by Campus Safety & Security. All students must have a university issued parking permit to park on campus. Parking permits can be purchased on a yearly or term basis. For more information about parking on campus, contact Safety and Security.

Can I have pets? Fish are allowed, but their bowl/tank is limited to 5 gallons; only one is allowed per room/apartment. Fish are the only things allowed in the tank (no snakes, lizards, frogs, turtles, etc.). If you are in doubt, please call us before you bring it.
