Prior to coming to JWU in 2004, Debbie Howarth taught Hotel Management and Business Courses at Massachusetts Bay Community College. She has more than twelve years of experience in the hospitality and tourism industries and has held positions as a hotel General Manager and Regional Director of Sales & Marketing for four hotels. She has also received marketing and advertising awards from Choice Hotels International.

Howarth’s areas of expertise encompass sales and marketing, operations, guest services, and human resource management. The college’s new advanced hospitality sales seminar course was developed under her leadership. She also serves as faculty advisor to the Sales and Marketing concentration.

Howarth has completed a faculty internship with Marriott International. She is also a Certified Hospitality Marketing Executive (CHME) and a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE). Howarth is a longtime member of the HSMAI (Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International) and most recently became the 2013 Immediate Past President of the HSMAI Boston Chapter, Inc. She is also a member of ICHRIE (International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education), MPI (Meeting Professionals International), TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and MATSOL (Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages).
