Denver Broncos Intern Tackles Dietetics

Visit Sports Authority Field, and you might see Peyton Manning, Wes Walker — and now, Johnson & Wales University student James. “Working with the best athletes in the world playing the best sport in the world ... there is nothing better,” he says.

Here’s what James has to say:

NFL Personal Chef I was given the chance to go into a few of the player’s homes and personal chef for them.

My most exciting project? Probably getting to know the players on a more personal level, and helping them with their nutritional needs.

Nutrition 101 I gained lot of nutritional experience with the guys. I learned more on what supplements to look out for so the athlete does not get suspended and lose four game checks.

I work under the Broncos RD, working with the players on:

  • Meal plans
  • Supplements
  • Recovery nutrition

Pro Sports Career Experience This internship showed me how to be an RD in the sports world. I gained a lot of background information on how an NFL team is run. It also gave me some connections that I may use in the future after college.

Start at JWU I love sports, I watch sports every day and have been playing them my entire life. I also love food. Combining them is a dream come true.

When I visited JWU as a high school senior, Chef Makuch gave a talk on how one of JWU’s graduates was cooking for the US Olympic team. Once I heard that, I knew I wanted to combine my love for food with my love for sports.
