When choosing a CSL site, pick an organization that’s doing work that is meaningful to you. Many sites fill up very quickly; pick at least 1-2 alternates to make sure you don’t get closed out during registration.
Review the CSL sites below before registration to learn about service opportunities, days and times available for service and orientation dates and times.
Registration Fri, Mar 8, 1pm Select an organization below, scroll to the bottom of the site page and click the button to register. You will need your class section, professor’s name, student ID (J number), phone number and JWU email address (we will only use JWU email).
Print your confirmation page once you’ve registered. You will need all the detailed information on that confirmation page, including the date and time of your orientation, your contact at the site and directions to the site.
Registration Closes Sun, Mar 17If you have not registered online by this date, you must contact the Community Outreach office no later than Monday, March 18, at which point you will be assigned a site. The office is located in the Academic Center’s 5th floor executive office.
Orientation Wed, Mar 20 or Thu, Mar 21Your orientation will take place at your CSL site location. (You choose which date works best for your schedule.)

Community Service Learning Sites
A Better World Spaces available: 0 A Better World is an after school/summer camp program which provides students with a safe environment to learn, play and be nurtured. It is our mission to transform the community and families by building them up mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We are a non-profit organization with emphasis on helping the Ashley Park/Westchester Community.
Anita Stroud Youth Development Program Spaces available: 5 The Anita Stroud Youth Development Program is a program which serves low income students in grades Pre-K through Grade 5. Students are assisted with homework and provided tutoring in reading and math, and other subject areas. Throughout the school week, students are provided with extra-curricular activities in physical education, bible study, art and chess.
Apple Orchard Farm Spaces available: 0 Apple Orchard Farm is an all natural producer of beef, pork and poultry, farm produce and honey. We have served the local community since 1971 and are an NC Certified Meat Handler and Roadside Farm Market. We are also charter members of the NC Agritourism Networking Association and the NC Foothills Fresh Program. We offer all natural foods for the public, along with educational tours of the farm.
Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County Spaces available: 0 We are a youth recreational facility, specializing in assisting children and their families who come from disadvantaged circumstances.
Bradley-Reid Corporation Spaces available: 0 BRC's mission is to provide supportive and case management services to persons diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
Brookstone Schools Spaces available: 0 NO OPPORTUNITIES SPRING TERM **Brookstone Schools is a non-profit K-6 grade faith-based school which is serving the needs of over 100 inner-city children in West Charlotte, The school offers these children a unique opportunity to aquire a strong work ethic, a sense of personal responsibility, and an attitude of service toward others.
Bruns Academy Spaces available: 0 Bruns Academy is a public school serving approximately 800 students. Many of our students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. This year Bruns Academy is a Pre-K through 8th grades. We are committed to creating a school where all children will have the opportunity to thrive with the help of our staff, volunteers, partnerships, and community.
Charlotte Family Housing Spaces available: 1 Charlotte Family Housing’s mission is to empower homeless families to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through shelter, housing, supportive services and advocacy. CFH has two transitional shelters for families: Hawthorne Place and Plaza Place. Plaza Place has the capacity to house fifteen families, and Hawthorne Place houses 6 families. Social workers provide intensive services that help families during their stay and up to 2-3 years after they move into housing while they receive a rent subsidy. You will report to Hawthorne Place (inside St. Johns Baptist Church) for orientation, but could work in either location based on need.
Charlotte Rescue Mission Spaces available: 0 Charlotte Rescue Mission provides free Christian residential recovery programs to men who are addicted to drugs and alcohol (90 day program for the men and a 120 day program for the women.) The rehabilitation program includes the 12 step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous identifying Jesus Christ as the higher power.
Children's Theatre of Charlotte Spaces available: 0 The Children's Theatre of Charlotte works to enrich the lives of young people, of all cultures - ages 3 to 18, through theatre and education experiences of the highest quality.
Classroom Central Spaces available: 3 Classroom Central is a FREE store for teachers who work in low-income schools in and around the Charlotte region. Through our mission of equipping students to effectively learn by collecting and distributing free school supplies, Classroom Central distributed more than $5.6 million in FREE school supplies to 132,000 students during the 2011-2012 academic year.
Community Culinary School of Charlotte, Encore Catering Spaces available: 0 Encore Catering is the revenue generating arm of the non-profit Community Culinary School of Charlotte, teaching culinary arts free-of-charge to adults who have experienced barriers to employment. Encore is a full-service catering company offering fare from continental breakfasts to wedding receptions.
Crisis Assistance Ministry Spaces available: 3 It is the mission of Crisis Assistance Ministry to provide assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them move toward self sufficiency. It is our vision to inspire our community to justice and generosity as we provide help, hope and understanding to people struggling with limited financial resources.
Dilworth Soup Kitchen Spaces available: 4 Dilworth Soup Kitchen provides a fine, nutritious meal at no cost to all who hunger for food and comfort, using donated fresh ingredients with a generous sprinkling of love and volunteer efforts from the community. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 12:30 on Monday's at First Christian Church and at 3 other locations throughout the week. Our guests are served a fabulous, freshly prepared meal "sit down restaurant" style, with china, flatware and glasses - NO cafeteria lines, trays and paper plates here! First Baptist Church-West Spaces available: 6 FBC-W after school program offers affordable after-school activities for all students. We are a faith-based program with emphasis on high educational achievement, providing specialized tutoring, chorus, keyboarding, and violin lessons.
Florence Crittenton Services Spaces available: 1 The mission of Florence Crittenton Services is to promote health and hope for tomorrow's children by providing comprehensive health, educational and social services for single pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents, women and their families. Programs offered by the agency serve as an alternative for disadvantaged, high-risk pregnant adolescents and women throughout the Carolinas. The residential home provides access to medical care, educational/vocational services, substance abuse education and intervention, health education, parenting and adoption support services, counseling and other individualized services based upon the needs of the clients.
Friendship Garden Spaces available: 0 Little Sugar Creek Greenway community garden in the Belmont neighborhood. The garden is part of a national gardening program to provide fresh, organically grown food and serve as a teaching facility where citizens can learn the benefits of earth-friendly compost gardening. This community service opportunity comes via a partnership with Mecklenburg County Solid Waste-Waste Reduction program, an educational program designed to encourage people to reduce, recycle, and reuse products instead of sending them to the landfill.
Friendship Trays Spaces available: 0 Friendship Trays is an organization which began in 1976 with the purpose of delivering meals to six shut-ins in the Elizabeth neighborhood. Over 750 hot nutritious meals are prepared at the Distribution St. location and delivered daily to recipients in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area. The mission of Friendship Trays is to deliver daily, in a caring and friendly manner, balanced meals to individuals in this community who are unable, because of age or infirmity to obtain or prepare their own meals.
Habitat for Humanity Charlotte (ReStore) Spaces available: 3 The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte; everything in the store has been donated, and all proceeds from sales of donated items go toward building homes in partnership with needy families in Charlotte. ReStore volunteers may not be swinging a hammer on a construction site, but they are building homes with their hearts- the ReStore has already funded 34 homes to date!
Harvest Center of Charlotte Spaces available: 5 The Harvest Center provides emergency and transitional services (food, housing, etc.) to homeless individuals. 700-800 hot meals are served per week.
Highland Renaissance Academy Spaces available: 13 We are a PreK-5 elementary school in North Charlotte serving approximately 587 students. English as a second language students make up 37% of our population and 88% of students are receiving free and/or reduced lunch.
Hope Haven, Inc. Spaces available: 10 Hope Haven, Inc. is a foundation of recovery, providing life skills for homeless chemically dependent men, women and children within a supportive residential environment, leading to independence.
Hospitality House of Charlotte Spaces available: 0 Hospitality House of Charlotte is a 26 year old nonprofit organization providing shelter, to out-of-town families with a loved one receiving treatment in Charlotte area hospitals.
InnerVision, Inc. Spaces available: 0 InnerVision operates as a day program for adults with trauma, mental health and/or substance abuse challenges. All clients are psychiatrically stable and live in the community. Focus of the program is to teach skills in the areas of education, employment readiness and social skills development.
Jackson Park Ministries Spaces available: 5 Jackson Park Ministries exists to transform the lives of distressed low-income families and at-risk children located in our neighborhood, the greater Charlotte community and beyond. We seek to do this through a Transformational Housing Program, various Community Benevolence Ministries such as a food pantry, and various Youth and Children’s Programs.
Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas, Inc. Spaces available: 0 Junior Achievement uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. JA BizTown is an experiential learning opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to run their own mini-city for a day.
Latin American Coalition Spaces available: 3 The Latin American Coalition is a community of Latin Americans, immigrants, and allies that promotes full and equal participation of all people in the civic, economic, and cultural life of North Carolina through education, celebration, and advocacy.
Leafcrest Learning Center-YWCA Spaces available: 2 At Leafcrest Youth Learning Center we provide a place for the community’s children to learn, grow and have fun with individualized opportunities and inclusive programming. Our program is designed with the intent to help each student reach their academic goals, enhance their self-esteem, self worth, social skills and most of all help steer them in making positive and selective productive life choices. Some of the tools that are implemented to enhance each student’s ability to succeed in school and their community are through character-building, anger management, conflict resolution activities, tutoring, homework assistance, Teaching Tolerance (TT’s) and Teacher Directive Activities (TDA’s). Others include; field trips, hands-on arts & crafts activities, and group learning opportunities.
Lutheran Family Services Spaces available: 3 Lutheran Family Services in th Carolinas has served the Carolina's most vulnerable people since 1976. We respond to Christ's call to serve all people, regardless of race, national origin, orientation, religion or creed. We provide a safe haven for children in crisis, adults with special needs, homeless veterans, refugees and individuals and families at risk of becoming homeless or struggling to recover from disaster.
Male Leadership Academy Spaces available: 7 The Male Leadership Academy of Charlotte is a private Christian all boys school. We are starting with grades K-3 and will add a grade level each year. Our school focuses on building leadership skills in our scholars by building strong foundational pillars.
Men’s Shelter of Charlotte Spaces available: 0 Men’s Shelter of Charlotte is the only full-time emergency homeless shelter for men in the Charlotte area. We provide resources to over 500 homeless men at two shelter locations. Our goal is to offer safe shelter and meet basic needs. We address barriers related to homelessness and self-sufficiency. Men’s Shelter of Charlotte staff works diligently with each man individually to obtain appropriate needs. The focus of our mission is to obtain and maintain appropriate housing for the men we serve.
Metro School Spaces available: 3 Metro School is a public school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System serving students 3-22 years of age with moderate to severe disabilities.
Reid Park Academy Spaces available: 3 Reid Park academy is a Title 1 school that house grades Pre-K to eighth grade
Safe Alliance (Kitchen) Spaces available: 0 Safe Alliance’s mission is to provide hope and healing for people in crisis. Our location serves as a shelter for survivors of domestic violence but we provide many services in our multiple locations. We provide 24 hour sexual assault/rape/domestic violence crisis lines in addition to a number of other services related to those same issues.
Stowe Dairy Farms Spaces available: 0 Stowe Dairy Farms is a sustainable, working third-generation farm raising grass fed, no antibiotics or hormones all natural Black Angus cows for beef, six varieties of Christmas trees, sorghum (molasses) syrup, all natural produce, and RIR and Barred Rock chickens for eggs. Our focus is on educating our visitors about life on a small family farm in the early 1900’s through events/programs during the year, making sorghum syrup using old-timey equipment and methods in the fall and with activities during the Christmas season.
Supportive Housing Communities Spaces available: 4 Since 2003, Supportive Housing Communities (SHC) has owned and operated McCreesh Place, Charlotte’s first permanent supportive housing apartment community for disabled men overcoming homelessness. Our MISSION: to provide affordable housing to alleviate homelessness and human suffering.
