Description We are a PreK-5 elementary school in North Charlotte serving approximately 587 students. English as a second language students make up 37% of our population and 88% of students are receiving free and/or reduced lunch.

Service Opportunities Work with classroom teachers and a small group of students on reading, writing, and/or math skills. Please note that due to the time constraints, volunteers will most likely work in 2-3 different classrooms each visit. Volunteers are also needed to pass out the daily snacks, work in the media center and the before after school program.(see note in special requirements)

Special Requirements IMPORTANT: To get started as soon as possible you will need to complete a CMS volunteer application PRIOR to orientation. Please do this as soon as you complete your on-line registration for Community Service Learning. Go to, click on New Volunteer". Students must check in upon arrival and check out when departing. Make sure to bring JWU picture ID. Get time sheet signed by your volunteer supervisor or assigned teacher each visit. If you want to work during the before or after school program from 7:00 - 8:15 a.m. or 3:45 - 6:00 p.m., you need to bring proof of a negative TB test.

Directions Driving Directions from Johnson & Wales University, 801 West Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202: Go east on Trade Street towards South Cedar Street. Turn left onto North Graham Street. Turn right onto Craighead Road, just before I-85 ramps. Highland is just before North Tryon Street on your right. Public Transportation Options from the Charlotte campus: Take the free Gold Rush Red Line to Transportation Center and then CATS Bus Route 11 (N. Tryon/Sugar Creek). Get off at the N. Tryon/W. Craighead stop and the school will be on your left. Buses come every 16-22 minutes.
