Description Bruns Academy is a public school serving approximately 800 students. Many of our students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. This year Bruns Academy is a Pre-K through 8th grades. We are committed to creating a school where all children will have the opportunity to thrive with the help of our staff, volunteers, partnerships, and community.

Service Opportunities Classroom Volunteers: Visit 1/week or more to help individual students and/or small groups with math and/or reading skills. They will provide academic assistance, a one on one relationship with a caring adult, and motivation to succeed. *The weekly time commitment is approximately 45 min-1hr or more. Special Event Volunteers/Office Assistance: Help with special activities including after-school programs, family night, math night, field day, career day and other school events. Volunteers will provide the needed staffing to make the events successful. Volunteers will be able to share their talents and/or expertise. Volunteers may be asked to assist office staff/ Media Specialist with various tasks. *Time commitment varies from 1 hour to 8 hours per event.

Available community service days and times There will be numerous volunteer opportunities every Monday – Friday, as well as special events on weekends. Our school day is 8:15 AM -3:15 PM. We will continue to match volunteers with a wide variety of schedules due to special events.

Special Requirements IMPORTANT: To get started as soon as possible after orientation, you will need to complete a CMS volunteer application PRIOR to orientation. Please do this as soon as you complete your on-line registration for Community Service Learning. Go to www.cms.k12.nc.us, click on Volunteers & Partners and then on the "Register to Volunteer" link. Students must check in upon arrival and check out when departing. Make sure to bring JWU picture ID. Get time sheet signed by your volunteer supervisor or assigned teacher each visit.
