Logistics

timing Eligible Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry students will participate in the co-op program during their sophomore year and may check their course template as early as winter term of their freshman year to learn which sophomore trimester they will complete the experience. Eligible Nutrition students will participate in the co-op during their senior year. Students should make an appointment to meet with their Coordinator in the Career Development Office at least two tri-mesters prior to their co-op term to discuss a plan for securing a site and specific goals for the experience.

securing a co-op site There are several methods you may use to secure a host site for your experience; to learn more about securing a co-op site and specific sites with whom the University has established relationships, contact your Co-op Coordinator.

eligibility for co-op

domestic co-ops To be eligible, students must have completed all freshman culinary/pastry labs, have an incident-free campus judicial record, have a minimum GPA of 2.75, be financially cleared by the registrar, and meet all application deadlines.

international co-ops To be eligible, student must meet all criteria for domestic co-op, and submit two letters of recommendation, a cover letter, have a minimum GPA of 3.25, and possess at least one year of back-of-the-house experience.  The student must also have informed our office two terms prior to their co-op experience of their intent, and have researched their host country and possible sites.  Once approved through the Denver campus, students must also be approved through the International Coordinator in Providence.

applying for co-op You will begin the physical application process for co-op the term before your scheduled work experience (two terms for international co-ops); however, research and contact with your Experiential Learning Coordinator should begin at least two terms prior.

Step 1 Attend a co-op information session to learn more about the program and become eligible for Step 2. Dates for information sessions are available from the Career Development Office.

Step 2 Submit the following to the Career Development Office:

  • Completed Application (115K Word) Form
  • An Emailed attachment of your current JWU resume sent to the Culinary Arts Co-op Coordinator
  • Two letters of recommendation (International co-op only)
  • Cover letter (International co-op only)

application due dates
Spring '08 Co-op -- December 19
Summer '08 Co-op -- March 28
Fall '08 Co-op -- April 11

Step 3 Schedule an interview with the Culinary Arts Co-op Coordinator.  An initial interview is mandatory; subsequent meetings for finalizing details may also be needed.

final preparations You will attend a group co-op orientation with your Coordinator to receive your student manual, review the required assignments and grading procedures, and hear tips for making your co-op a successful, rewarding experience.

NOTE:  The co-op placement process varies for each student and for each site.
