ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT Johnson & Wales University will be the destination of choice for individuals seeking career education who are highly motivated and demonstrably capable of success in JWU programs. The university will endeavor to establish tuition at affordable levels, and offer financial assistance that supports improvement of retention and graduation rates.

To accomplish this aspiration, the university will achieve these goals:

GOAL Sharpen admissions standards to better align acceptances with the probability of student success in university programs by

  1. Strengthening institutional research capacity to continually evaluate and identify the traits of those individuals most likely to succeed at JWU;
  2. Refining the university’s applicant ranking system to more accurately assess each applicant’s potential for success at JWU;
  3. Denying acceptance, beginning in Fall 2007, to applicants with a low potential for success;
  4. Working toward enhanced selectivity in all colleges based upon experience and research, with the goal of maximizing retention and career success;
  5. Creating a new, conditional acceptance policy that mandates applicants receive academic support where necessary for their success;
  6. Creating a strategic marketing plan specific to guidance counselors and other high school educators that will promote JWU’s enhanced selectivity.

GOAL Develop new recruitment strategies to attract and enroll increased numbers of students with potential for academic and career success by

  1. Expanding the e-recruitment marketing plan through the use of a constituent relationship management (CRM) program to better communicate with students and parents;
  2. Replenishing a substantial portion of the students denied admission with additional international and domestic students with a high success potential through marketing new and expanded programs;
  3. Reorganizing our admissions operations center to utilize technology in the admissions decision process, enabling staff to provide more personalized service to prospective students and families;
  4. Developing new National Student Organization (NSO) programs and scholarship opportunities;
  5. Creating a benchmark study and branding opportunities for our College of Business and The Hospitality College that allows Admissions to differentiate our programs in the marketplace.

GOAL Increase international enrollment by

  1. Creating a five-year recruitment plan to support a universitywide international enrollment goal of 850 undergraduates;
  2. Researching the current international student body (graduate and undergraduate) to identify the traits of individuals most likely to succeed at JWU;
  3. Developing optimal services for international students at each campus.

GOAL Establish a tuition pricing model which provides greater "affordability" while maintaining the financial strength of the university by

  1. Determining an appropriate pricing structure by analyzing a student’s ability to pay;
  2. Pricing competitively in the market;
  3. Ensuring that the budget supports the pricing structure and reflects the student’s ability to pay.

GOAL Reallocate financial aid to increase student enrollment and retention by

  1. Eliminating selected university loan programs and using those funds for need-based aid to reduce students’ debt burden, while maintaining appropriate discount rates;
  2. Redefining our merit-based scholarship programs to make the best scholarship offers to attract students;
  3. Implementing an awarding philosophy that maximizes aid in the freshman year yet maintains appropriate funding levels in subsequent years;
  4. Expanding the international scholarship program.
