North Miami Campus Sends Holiday Wishes to Troops Overseas NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Dec. 14, 2006 - For College of Business chairwoman Joanne Leoni, what was just a simple idea to send a few holiday card wishes to troops overseas, quickly evolved into something more. Leoni soon realized that perhaps other students throughout the North Miami Campuswould be interested in sending holiday wishes to troops. Originally, Leoni planned to keep it small by just sending a few cards from students and faculty in the College of Business. "It started out as a thought I had about soldiers overseas not being able to come home for the holidays," Leoni said. "Then we came up with a plan to create a message that would be coming from the entire campus. So in early December, the College of Business established a goal to expand the effort by sending 2,000 holiday cards to troops. The goal was set at 2,000 to represent a number close to the current enrollment of 2,200 students at the University.
On Dec. 14, Sergeant Charles Carman from the United States Army picked up 1,850 cards in an official send-off that included select readings from the holiday cards.
