North Miami Campus Helps Elementary NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Dec. 18, 2006—Johnson & Wales University faculty, staff and students found themselves working with a group of new students on Dec. 6 and 8. Each of the 39 J&W employees and students spent an entire day in a classroom at W.J. Bryan Elementary School in North Miami, teaching the students business curriculum developed by Junior Achievement of Miami. Junior Achievement is an organization whose programs focus on dropout prevention, self-esteem and workforce readiness for the global marketplace of the 21st century. Students at W.J. Bryan Elementary School learned about city zoning, assembly line production and where resources come from through interactive curriculum.
Junior Achievement is the largest and fastest-growing economic education not-for-profit organization in the world. This marked the first time that the two nearby institutions participated in the program. "The University is proud to help enrich the quality of education that children in our community receive through hands-on, interactive programs," said Barry Vogel, director of administration at Johnson & Wales University. "Junior Achievement's programs combine concepts that they may not have the opportunity to learn about with the basics already being taught in their classrooms." Participation in Junior Achievement is part of J&W's ongoing support of W.J. Bryan Elementary School. In previous years, University employees tutored students before the FCAT exams. The University has also hosted the Big Chef/Little Chef mentoring program for several years to teach students about consumer science, nutrition and etiquette. More than 7 million students in more than 1,000 communities across the United States, and in more than 125 foreign countries, participated in Junior Achievement programs last year.
