Award-winning Journalist Charles Fishman to
Speak at Providence Campus
"Does Wal-Mart Have a Soul?"

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Jan. 16, 2008 — Fast Company magazine senior writer and award-winning investigative journalist Charles Fishman will speak at Johnson & Wales University about how Wal-Mart has changed the world of business on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1:40 p.m. in Xavier Auditorium. Fishman is the author of "The Wal-Mart Effect: How the World’s Most Powerful Company Really Works – and How it’s Transforming the American Economy."

According to the Wal-Mart website, as of January 2008 there are 10 Wal-Mart stores in Rhode Island (two supercenters, seven discount stores, and one Sam’s Club) employing 2,511 Wal-Mart associates. Wal-Mart paid more than $4.8 million in state and local taxes in Rhode Island during fiscal year 2007. The website also notes Wal-Mart’s level of community involvement for 2006, citing the $424,312 in cash and in-kind donations they provided to the communities where they are present in Rhode Island.
