School of Education Holds Information Session

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — February 19, 2007 —On Wednesday, February 28, the School of Education will hold an information session at the Paramount Building, 299 Harborside Boulevard, Providence, second floor at 5 p.m. for recruiting new students for the August 2007 start of classes.

The Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at Johnson & Wales University recently opened its new facilities at the Providence Harborside campus. The new facilities in the Paramount Building include two new classrooms and two new conference rooms.

The doctoral program, launched in 1996, combines academic and work-based learning for career advancement. The program emphasizes the preparation of educators who aspire to advance to leadership positions in their respective fields. The program offers courses in elementary-secondary and higher education. Students are required to attend classes for two years on alternate weekends and work on their dissertation during year three.

A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.) in educational leadership is issued upon completion of the first two years of academic work in the doctoral program with an earned GPA of 3.25.

"A recent survey of all 94 current students and the 140 alumni conducted by Dr. Thomas Sepe, educational consultant, found that key program attributes were: cohort structure, an alternate weekend schedule — a schedule that allows students who work full time to complete their course work, small class size consisting of 10-12 students and personalized attention from distinguished faculty," said Dr. Robert K. Gable, director of the doctoral program.

The cohort structure is essential to the philosophy of the program. Students enter and progress through courses as a group, fostering a team approach to studying and solving educational problems, and interpreting and disseminating the results of such study. An important outcome of the program is to establish, over time, a true network of working scholars who can examine, critique, support and complement one another's educational practice. Cohorts may blend students for certain courses. Not all work will be completed in the cohort system; there will be several opportunities for independent work.

Admission to Johnson & Wales University's doctoral program in educational leadership is competitive. Only those students who have demonstrated a strong, successful academic foundation, appropriate experience, intellectual promise and dedication to community service will be admitted. To

gain admission to the doctoral program, a student must possess a master's degree in an appropriate field from an accredited institution. The student must have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average for all post-baccalaureate study. Information regarding information sessions, sitting in on a class, or program materials

may be obtained from the admissions coordinator, Linda Ancona, at 401-598-1993 or e-mail. The doctoral catalog and a video can be accessed with faculty, current student and alumni interviews.

Since 1985, with the establishment of the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School, Johnson & Wales University, Providence Campus has expanded its programs to include post-graduate studies.
