student success
A variety of services are offered to assist each student in
preparation for graduation and career placement. Our goal is to
support students in their efforts to develop and maximize their
talents, empower them to direct their own learning, and lead them
to pathways of success.
tutorial
assistance The University provides tutorial assistance through
its Achievement Center. Every effort is made to identify students
in need of assistance. Students themselves, however, are urged to
take the initiative in seeking out-of-class help during faculty
office hours and through the Achievement Center.
Professional tutoring is available in composition and peer tutoring
is available in math, accounting, and all content courses. Tutors,
directed by a learning skills professional, provide individual and/or
group sessions as student needs and resources dictate.
Hours are: Mon-Wed 9am-6pm, Thurs 9am-4-pm, Fri 11am-2pm, Sat &
Sun by appointment. For more information, contact the Achievement
Center 305-892-7026.
university testing An Academic Advisor provides students
with the opportunity to gain credit for previous academic and/or
work experience through the following:placement tests, proficiency
tests, CLEP Exams, challenge exams, life experience credits. For
more information on University testing, contact Student
Academic Services 305-892-7038.
personal advising The Student Success Advisor provides personal
services, and when appropriate may refer students for professional
counseling. Any student, resident, or commuter, who would like someone
objective to speak with, is strongly encouraged to speak with the
Advisor. Students who find it difficult adjusting to college life,
learning to live with roommates or being away from home may find
help with the Student Success Advisor. The Advisor also serves as
an excellent resource on topics including wellness, stress management,
alcohol and drugs, mental health and relationships. For more information
on personal or probation advising, contact Student
Success 305-892-7026.
academic probation advising A student is placed on academic
probation if the student's GPA falls below a 2.00. These students
can receive assistance through our advising staff and Achievement
Center. Students on academic probation should contact Kalen
Hezard 305-892-7073.
students with disabilities Johnson & Wales is dedicated
to providing reasonable accommodations to give students with disabilities
the opportunity to succeed in their academic pursuits. While maintaining
the highest academic integrity, the University strives to balance
scholarship with support services in order to level the academic
playing field. Possible accommodations for students with disabilities
who provide appropriate documentation include oral and/or extended
time for tests, enlarged print, use of taped text materials, tape
recorders allowed in class, note-taking assistance, reduced course
load. Current students with disabilities should contact Liliana
Brown 305-892-5331.
Because some programs of study at the University have technical
standards and requirements, applicants and prospective students
with disabilities should contact the Director of Student Success,
Dr. Martha Sacks 305-892-7046,
to discuss the specific accommodations that are available.
