computer services
The Providence Campus has three computer centers that are run by Academic Computing Services (ACS). Staff members are available in these computer labs to help students and answer questions. Students need an active JWU email account to access the computers. Students who do not have an active account, can call the University Help Desk.

In an effort to better serve students, ACS is allowing students to reserve designated computer labs to practice presentations. Reservations (0.5 hour blocks) will only be accepted in these labs when classes are not being held. ACS will work to ensure that students reserving the labs are not disturbed and that their privacy is respected. Lab reservations are being taken at the front desk of the three computing centers.

The Academic Center labs house more than 300 workstations. There is software available for drafting, programming, and electronic engineering. 401-598-1504

The Harborside labs have 128 networked and Internet-ready computers. Software includes a powerful statistical package, as well as nutrition and menu planning templates. 401-598-1592

The Xavier labs have 110 networked and 68 non-networked computers, all Internet-ready, for general use and specialized use, such as for hotel property management and business administration. 401-598-1535

computer labs Many changes have been made in the computer labs this summer.

In addition to one new lab and more than 400 new computers, many computers in the Providence labs have been replaced with systems that have CD-RW capabilities. CD-RW drives allow you to save work to a CD much in the same way you save work to a floppy disk or zip drive. This is only possible by utilizing third-party software installed on these machines which will format the CD using a Universal Data Format (UDF) to act like a disk. In the computer labs, we use a product called Roxio (www.roxio.com).

Labs where you can utilize the Roxio CD-RW media:
Academic: A216, A402, A518
Xavier: X201, X202, X203, X204, X205
Harborside: HCC1, HCC2, HCC3

Important: Most computers will not recognize the UDF format of the CD unless you have third-party software like Roxio installed. As a result, we do not recommend utilizing this storage media for work you may want to access both at home and the labs.

For any materials you would like to access and update at home and on campus, we continue to recommend the traditional 3-1/2” floppy disk, flash (or thumb) drives, or network shared drives. You may also purchase software which recognizes the UDF format and then also use
a CD-RW as a large storage medium for home.

So, now you can use CD-R or CD-RW, USB flash drives, or floppy disks as portable media in all labs. Zip disks can still be used, but will likely be phased out by Fall 2007.

The Johnson & Wales bookstores carry individual CD-RW disks, flash drives, as well as floppy disks. Many local and Internet retailers also offer these media.
