baseball players earn great northeast athletic conference accolades May 19, 2004

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Several Johnson & Wales University baseball standouts garnered Great Northeast Athletic Conference honors, announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Senior infielder Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) was named the GNAC Player of the Year, junior pitcher Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) was named the conference's Co-Pitcher of the Year and freshman infielder Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year. All three were also first-team All-GNAC honorees. Joining them on the first team is junior catcher Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) while junior infielder Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) was named a second-team All-GNAC selection.

Carsner was among the league leaders in batting with a .426 average and also tallied 36 runs and added 39 RBI. Of his 60 hits, 15 were for extra bases, including four home runs. A standout in the field, he also posted an impressive .984 fielding percentage at first base. He opened the 2004 campaign with a 12-game hitting streak and also had 17 multi-hit games.

Howard emerged as one of the top pitchers and overall players in the conference. He posted a 7-1 record with a 1.52 ERA. His ERA was the lowest in the league while his seven wins ranked second in the GNAC. The lefty struck out a league-best 62 batters and allowed only 18 walks on the season in 65.1 innings of work. Howard also had a solid season at the plate, batting .319 with 29 runs and 29 RBI. He also led the team with a .648 slugging percentage.

Hurley made an immediate impact on the Wildcats fortunes during his first season in a JWU uniform. He was among the team and conference leaders in every offensive category. For the season, he batted .397with a team-best 45 runs and added 36 RBI and a team-best 95 total bases.

Kitts was named the first-team catcher after batting .338 with 39 runs, 30 RBI, 18 extra-base hits and a .609 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, he gunned down 31 of 72 potential base runners and had a .977 fielding percentage. As a second-team infielder, Bodine batted .328, scored 42 runs and led the team with 42 RBI and six home runs and also added seven stolen bases and tied for the team-lead with 14 doubles.

Johnson & Wales capped off the 2004 campaign as co-champions in the 2004 Division III ECAC Baseball Championship. The Wildcats were the regular season GNAC Champions and posted a school-record 27 victories.

baseball captures share of ecac division III championship May 8, 2004

QUINCY, Mass. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad earned the school's first-ever post-season championship with a share of the ECAC Division III Baseball Championship. The Wildcats battled Salve Regina to a 7-7 tie at Eastern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. The two teams were named Co-Champions after the game was stopped due to darkness after the ninth inning. Johnson & Wales advanced to the championship game after a thrilling 5-4 victory against Nichols in the semi-finals.

Salve Regina jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the fourth. JWU got on the board when junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) scored on an RBI single by fellow junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.). MacKay later scored on an RBI single by junior Mark Costello (West Greenwich, R.I.), making the score 4-2. Salve Regina extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth before the Wildcats chipped away again, making the score 6-3 on an RBI single by senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.). The Seahawks added a run in the top of the seventh and held a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the ninth. Salve Regina loaded the bases with one out in the inning before Howard snuffed out the rally with a pair of strikeouts. The talented junior left then provided the heroics in the bottom of the ninth, blasting a 450 foot shot to right field, a three-run home run to tie the game at 7-7. After the Wildcats were retired in the bottom of the ninth, the game was stopped due to darkness and both teams were declared co-champions. Howard went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) was 3-for-4 for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats wrapped up the season with a 27-16-3 record and shattered the school's single-season win total of 21. The squad captured the regular season GNAC Championship and reached the championship game before falling to WNEC.

baseball posts 11-9 victory against wpi in ecac championship May 7, 2004

Quincy, Mass. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad posted a thrilling 11-9 victory against Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the opening game of the ECAC Division III Championship at Bradley Field on Friday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead when freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) belted his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. WPI responded in the top of the second when junior T.J. McLaughlin (Manchester, Conn.) scored on an RBI single by freshman Matt Fiore (Wakefield, Mass.), knotting the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the second, JWU regained the lead on an RBI double by junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.), and took the 3-1 lead on a sac fly by sophomore John Fidalgo (Quincy, Mass.). The Wildcats then added to their lead when Hurley hit an RBI double and later scored on junior Brett Bodine's (Cranston, R.I.) two-run shot, his sixth of the year, to give the team a 6-1 advantage.

In the top of the third, WPI cut into the lead when senior John Buonomo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nick Angelini (Braintree, Mass.). After the Engineers cut into the JWU advantage in the top of the fourth, making the score 6-3, the Wildcats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) hit a two-run double and junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) followed with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to take a 10-3 lead. JWU went ahead 11-3 on an RBI single by junior Mark Costello (West Greenwich, R.I.).

WPI continued to cut away at the JWU advantage when senior Jon Naumowicz (Wareham, Mass.) belted a two-run home run to center field, making the score 11-5 in the top of the fifth. The Engineers again chipped away at the lead in the top of the sixth when an RBI single by Buonomo made the score 11-6. WPI continued to chip way when an RBI single by Angelini scored Buonomo the cut the lead to 11-7. An RBI single by sophomore Steve Taylor (Temple, N.H.) put a cap on WPI's three-run sixth inning, making the score 11-8. In the top of the eighth, WPI put runners on second and third with no outs. Mark Costello then came in in relief for Johnson & Wales, who retired the side and stranded three runners on to preserve the lead for JWU. In the top of the ninth, WPI made one last rally when senior Tyler Flosom (Goffstown, N.H.) drew a one out walk, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. The Engineers made the score 11-9 when Folsom scored on an RBI groundout by Buonomo. WPI then loaded the bases before Costello struck out McLaughlin to end the game.

Carsner went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Hurley was 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI in the victory for Johnson & Wales. Leading the way for WPI was junior Alex Aimetti (Waterford, Conn.) who went 4-for-6 with an RBI in the setback. Whitten picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with nine strikeouts while Costello notched his fifth save of the season, pitching two innings while allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 26-16-2 while WPI wraps up the 2004 season with a 16-16 record. The Wildcats will take on the winner of the Brandeis vs. Nichols contest on Saturday, May 8th in the semi-finals of the ECAC Championship at Brandeis at Noon.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup against UMass Dartmouth at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon. The game was the last home game for seniors Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) and Adam Kettle (Coventry, R.I.).

UMass Dartmouth took the early lead, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the second after a two-run double by junior Ryan Sullivan (Chicopee, Mass.). Johnson & Wales responded, however and tallied two in the bottom of the second, including back-to-back RBI singles by junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.) and freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.). The Wildcats continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third when junior John MacKay's (Pawtucket, R.I.) RBI double to right made the game 4-3. JWU then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.). The score remained tied until the top of the seventh when UMass Dartmouth tallied three runs, including what would prove to be the game-winning RBI single by Nettleton. The Corsairs then added five in the eighth and one in the ninth en route to the 13-4 victory.

Sophomore Rob Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI while Sullivan and senior Geoff Nettleton (Marlboro, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win for UMass Dartmouth. Hurley went 2-for-5 with one run and an RBI while Kettle and Carsner each tallied two hits in the setback for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Justin Talbot (Exeter, R.I.) suffered the loss for Johnson & Wales, allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of relief while sophomore Jason Thompson (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up the win for UMass Dartmouth, allowing four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 25-16-2 while UMass Dartmouth improves to 21-13 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, May 7th when they head to Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass., for the 2004 ECAC Division III Championship. JWU, the No. 1 seed for the tournament, will take on No. 8 seed Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 12:00 p.m.

baseball drops two against wnec in gnac championship May 1, 2004

Nashua, N.H. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped a pair of decisions against Western New England in the 2004 Great Northeast Athletic Conference at Holman Stadium in the championship round on Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the day, WNEC posted a 9-6 victory against JWU to for the final game of the double-elimination tournament. In the final contest, WNEC took the 17-7 win, earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

In the opening game, Western New England took an early lead and held the 6-2 advantage after three innings. Johnson & Wales responded, however late in the contest and cut the lead to 9-6 late in the game. It was not enough, however as Western New England held on for the three-run victory. Sophomore Jason Connelly (Scituate, Mass.) the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, picked up the win for WNEC, pitching the complete-game while allowing six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. He was also solid at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs. Leading the way for JWU at the plate was junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.), going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) and freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) each had two hits in the setback.

In the second game, Western New England posted 17 runs on 18 hits en route to the 17-7 victory and the GNAC Championship. Junior Justin McGee (Wilbraham, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI while freshman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, Vt.) and sophomore Rob Crouse (Adams, Mass.) each tallied three hits in the victory. Senior David Gwozdz (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up the win, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with seven runs and seven strikeouts. Hurley went 3-for-5 while Kitts was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in the setback.

With the losses Johnson & Wales falls to 24-14-2 while Western New England improves to 29-10. The Wildcats will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Williams for a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. The team will learn of its post-season fate when the bids to the ECAC Championship are announced on Monday.

baseball knocks off western new england 11-1 in gnac tournament April 30, 2004

Nashua, N.H. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad posted an impressive 11-1 victory against Western New England in the second round of the 2004 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Friday afternoon at Holman Stadium.

Johnson & Wales got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio). The Wildcats later added a run on a sacrifice fly by junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.). In the bottom of the second, JWU put three more on the board. Hurley belted a two-run home run, his third of the season, and junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) hit his fifth round-tripper of the year to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

Western New England got on the board in the top of the fourth when junior Chris Mahoney (Yorkville, N.Y.) tallied a two-run double and scored on an RBI single by freshman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, Vt.), making the game 5-1. JWU extended its lead, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) notched an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch, giving the team a 7-1 advantage. An RBI single by junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.) give the Wildcats an 8-1 lead before Hurley belted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left to give the team the 11-1 advantage. The game was stopped after the top of the seventh due to the conference's 10-run rule. Hurley was a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI while Bodine and Kitts each tallied two hits in the Wildcats victory.

Junior Rob Whitten notched the complete-game victory for Johnson & Wales, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts while senior David Gwozdz (Ludlow, Mass.). suffered the setback for Western New England, allowing five runs on four hits in one and a third innings pitched.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 24-12-2 on the season while Western New England is now 26-10. The Wildcats advance to the championship game of the GNAC tournament where they'll face off against the winner of the Western New England vs. Suffolk contest in the loser's bracket.

baseball knocks off southern vermont, 13-1 in gnac quarterfinals April 27, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The No. 1 seeded Johnson & Wales University baseball posted an impressive 13-1 victory against No. 8 seed Southern Vermont in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference on Tuesday afternoon at Pierce Field. With the win, JWU advances to the final four of the GNAC Championships, to be held at Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H., this weekend.

Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the first when freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the second, junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) led off with a solo home run. That would prove to be the game-winning run. The Wildcats added another in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Hurley, scoring junior Herbert Brown (Nassau, Bahamas). After a single run in the bottom of the third, JWU exploded for four runs in the fifth. Junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single from senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.). Carsner later scored on a double from junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.). The Wildcats then notched a pair of unearned runs to take 8-1 lead. JWU tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-run double by freshman Bill Reiss (Clinton, Conn.) and cruised to the 13-1 win.

Hurley was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Kitts went 3-for-4 with three runs for Johnson & Wales. Carsner also tallied three hits in the win for the Wildcats while sophomore Joel May went 3-for-4 in the loss for Southern Vermont. Southern Vermont's lone run came in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Evan Grogan.

Sophomore Dan Gilbert (Avenel, N.J.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings pitched while Grogan suffered the loss for Southern Vermont, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits in six innings.

Johnson & Wales improves to 22-12-2 while Southern Vermont falls to 1-18. The Wildcats will open play in the final four of the GNAC Championship on Thursday, April 29th against the winner of No. 4 Albertus Magnus and No. 5 Norwich. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

softball eliminated from gnac tournament with 8-0 loss to wnec April 22, 2004

Springfield, Mass. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball team was eliminated from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament with an 8-0 loss against Western New England in the Quarterfinal round on Thursday afternoon.

Western New England jumped on the board early, scoring a pair of runs in the first. The Golden Bears added two in the third, a single in the fourth and three in the fifth before the game was stopped due to the mercy rule with one out in the bottom of the fifth, giving WNEC the 8-0 win.

Sophomore Kaycea Grignon (St. Albans, Maine) had the lone hit for Johnson & Wales in the setback while Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) pitched four innings, allowing five runs, three of them earned on nine hits in the loss for the Wildcats. Leading the way for Western New England was Kristy Kehoss who went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Michelle Boss was 2-for-2 with three RBI.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 13-25 while Western New England improves to 29-9 on the year. The Golden Bears will host the remainder of the GNAC Tournament on Saturday and Sunday while Johnson & Wales returns to action on Monday, April 26th when it hosts UMass Boston at Pierce Field at 3:30 p.m.

baseball falls to brandeis, 2-1 in extra innings April 22, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped a 2-1 extra-innings non-conference matchup against Brandeis at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.

The two teams battled through five scoreless innings before Brandeis got on the board in the top of the sixth. Senior Lars Brossen (Wells, Maine) led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single from junior Jeff Krasner (East Greenwich, R.I.). In the bottom of the seventh, JWU capitalized on a Brandeis miscue when junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a two-out single to right, scoring junior Herbert Brown (Nassau, Bahamas) with the game-tying run. Brandeis threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth before freshman Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, Mass.) was out trying to score on a passed ball.

Brandeis took the 2-1 lead in the top of the 11th when sophomore Zach Golden (Milton, Mass.) led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from freshman Jeff Bourdon (North Adams, Mass.). The Judges then held on for the 2-1 victory.

Senior Bryan Lambert (Auburn, Maine) picked up the win for Brandeis, pitching six innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts while junior Mark Costello (West Greenwich, R.I.) suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout in two and two third innings of relief.

With the win Brandeis evened its record at 13-13 for the season while Johnson & Wales falls to 18-11-2. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 24th when they travel to Southern Vermont for a GNAC doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.

baseball edges albertus magnus twice in gnac doubleheader sweep April 21, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad posted a sweep against Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats took the first game by a score of 1-0 and completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first game, Johnson & Wales junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) and Albertus Magnus junior Bryan Burk (Madison, Conn.) faced off in a pitchers duel. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when JWU junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI single by fellow junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio). That would be the only scoring for the game as the Wildcats took the 1-0 victory. Howard went seven innings, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts while Burk allowed three hits with six strikeouts in the setback.

In the nightcap, Johnson & Wales took an early lead in the first inning when junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) scored on a fielder's choice and the Wildcats capitalized on an Albertus Magnus error, scoring Kitts to give the squad a 2-0 advantage. JWU increased its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on a two-run double from Howard, playing as the designated hitter. Howard drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Wildcats a 6-0 lead with a two-run double. Kitts went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs while Howard was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the win. Junior Rob Whitten (Enfield, Conn.) pitched the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in the victory while sophomore Tommy Holleran (Fairfield, Conn.) suffered the loss for Albertus Magnus, allowing six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

With the wins Johnson & Wales improves to 18-10-2 overall, 12-0 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 11-14, 6-6 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, April 22nd when they host Brandeis in a non-conference matchup at Pierce Field at 4:00 p.m.

baseball sweeps daniel webster in gnac doubleheader April 17, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball team swept Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon. JWU took the first game by a score of 7-0 and completed the sweep with a thrilling 5-4 extra-innings victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Johnson & Wales exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third, including a two-run double from freshman Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.). The Wildcats tallied a single run in the fourth on an RBI single to left by junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.). The team capped off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Hurley notched a two-run single, en route to the Wildcats the 7-0 victory. Hurley went 2-for-3 with one run and four RBI while Guarino and juniors Mark Costello (Exeter, R.I.) and John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) each had a pair of hits in the JWU victory. Freshman Brandon Fitzpatrick (Bedford, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Daniel Webster and also suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Sophomore Justin Talbot (Exeter, R.I.) picked up his first collegiate victory for the Wildcats, throwing three scoreless innings of relief while allowing only four hits.

JWU got on the board first on an RBI double from Costello in the second inning of the nightcap. Daniel Webster responded in the top of the fourth when an RBI single from sophomore Bob Shepard (Seymour, Conn.) tied the game at 1-1. The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the fourth however, scoring three runs, including a two-run single by freshman Mike Pendergast (Warwick, R.I.) to take the 4-1 lead. DWC tallied two in the fifth on run scoring singles by freshman Garrett Hardison (Eastbrook, Maine) and sophomore Kris Lull (Mahwah, N.J.) to cut the JWU lead to just 4-3. The visiting Eagles then tied the game in the top of the seventh on a double from Fitzpatrick, scoring Hardison to knot the game at 4-4. After JWU went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and Daniel Webster followed suit in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats took the game in the bottom of the eighth when Hurley plated Guarino with a single to left for the game-winning run, giving the Wildcats the 5-4 victory. Costello picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts in two innings of relief while Lull suffered the loss for Daniel Webster, allowing one unearned run on two hits in two thirds of an inning of relief.

With the two wins Johnson & Wales improves to 13-10-2, and remained perfect in the GNAC with an 8-0 mark while Daniel Webster falls to 0-14, 0-8 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, April 18th when they travel to Rivier for a GNAC twin-bill at 1:00 p.m.

softball swept by suffolk in gnac doubleheader April 17, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball squad dropped a pair of decisions against Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon. Suffolk took a 5-0 victory in the opener and completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap. In the first game, Suffolk junior Erin Pagel (Braintree, Mass.) pitched a no-hitter, allowing just one base runner on a walk.

Suffolk scored the only run it would need in the top of the first on a sacrifice bunt from junior Andria Shibler (Springfield, Ohio). The visiting Rams added two more in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Brenna Burr (Beaver, Pa.) and an RBI single by sophomore Lynn Bennett (Ashley Falls, Mass.). Suffolk capped off the scoring in the top of the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles from Shibler and sophomore Angela Belanger (Poland Spring, Maine). Pagel notched seven strikeouts in six innings in the no-hitter for Suffolk while freshman Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) suffered the loss for Johnson & Wales, allowing five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Lisa Murphy (Gig Harbor, Wash.) suffered the loss for Johnson & Wales, allowing three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in seven innings while junior Denise Trubia (Tolland, Conn.) picked up the win for Suffolk, allowing two unearned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball posted a 4-2 victory against Western Connecticut in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Friday evening.

JWU got on the board in the bottom of the third when freshman Bill Reiss (Clinton, Conn.) gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead on a two-run single to right. Western Connecticut responded in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of unearned runs. In the bottom of the seventh, JWU capitalized on a Western Connecticut error when junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) scored what would prove to be the game-winner after a hit from Reiss. Johnson & Wales added an insurance run I the bottom of the eighth and then held on for the 4-2 win. Reiss went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win while junior Justin McCulloch (Waterbury, Conn.) was 2-for-4 at the plate for Western Connecticut.

Junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, improving to 4-1 on the season after allowing two unearned runs on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings while junior Mark Costello (West Greenwich, R.I.) picked up the save with one perfect inning of relief. Freshman Josh Bertash (Tolland, Conn.) suffered the loss for Western Connecticut, allowing four runs, two of them earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests against Simmons in a doubleheader at Pierce Field on Monday afternoon. Simmons posted a 5-2 victory in the opener and completed the sweep with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Simmons jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third on an RBI single from Megan Conlin (Merrimac, Mass.) and a sacrifice bunt from Kate Condon (Mansfield, Mass.). The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from sophomore Kaycea Grignon (St. Albans, Maine), scoring senior Erin Stolba (Elmwood Park, N.J.). JWU knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Jennifer Murphy (North Easton, Mass.) scored on a single from freshman Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.). In the top of the fifth, the visiting Sharks tallied three runs, including an RBI single from Condon and a run scoring double by Kristen Linnenbank (Sugar Land, Texas) to take the 5-2 lead. Simmons would then hold on for the three-run victory. Amy Steinnagel (Vernon, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two runs in the win for Simmons while Grignon and Stolba each had two hits in the setback for JWU. Annie Hennigan (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in seven innings while Winslow suffered the loss for JWU, allowing five runs on nine hits in the complete-game.

Simmons finished the sweep with an impressive 10-1 win in the nightcap. The Sharks opened the game with three runs in the top of the first, including an RBI single from Condon. After a run in the third, Simmons tallied six runs in the top of the fifth en route to the 10-1 win. Conlin, Condon and Hennigan each had two hits while Linnenbank picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits in five innings while sophomore Lisa Murphy (Gig Harbor, Wash.) suffered the loss for the Wildcats, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad dropped a 9-1 decision to intra-state rival Salve Regina in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Salve Regina jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first on a three-run home run from senior Daryl Murtha (Bolton, Mass.). The visiting Seahawks scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio). Murtha hit his second home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the Seahawks four run fifth en route to the team's 9-1 victory. Murtha went 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI while junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) was 2-for-4 in the setback for the Wildcats.

Freshman Joseph Leafe (Manchester, N.H.) picked up his first collegiate win for Salve Regina, allowing one unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings while sophomore Dan Gilbert (Avenel, N.J.) suffered the loss for JWU, slowing four runs on four hits in three innings of work.

In singles action, freshman Dan Silber (Woodcliff Lake, N.Y.) picked up a thrilling 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Dave Stelmach at No. 2 singles while junior Aaron Carnegie (Bronx, N.Y.) posted a 6-3, 6-4 win against Matt Carona at No. 4 singles and teamed with freshman Stephen Hanna (Vienna, Va.) to take a 8-2 win against Dan Matis and Adam Tannenbaum at No. 2 doubles.

The Wildcats posted a pair of shutouts, taking the first game by a score of 5-0 and completing the sweep with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

Johnson & Wales got on the board early in the bottom of the second when freshman Amanda Meilleur (Richmond, Vt.) scored the only run the Wildcats would need on a wild pitch. JWU added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI single from junior Karen Thureson (New Britain, Conn.) en route to the 5-0 win. Freshman Kelly Knorr (Willow Grove, Pa.) went 2-for-2 with a run scored while fellow rookie Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) pitched the complete-game shutout for JWU, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts.

In the nightcap the Wildcats also scored the games first run when Meilleur, who led off with a double, scored on a wild pitch. EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad posted an impressive 17-3 victory against Mass. Maritime in a non-conference matchup at Pierce Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single from junior Chris Guarino (Norwood, N.J.). Mass. Maritime responded in the top of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs to cut the lead to 4-2. JWU extended their lead in the bottom of the second with five runs, including a two-run double from senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.). The Wildcats added one in the fourth and exploded for seven in the bottom of the sixth as junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) blasted a three-run home run en route to the team's 17-3 victory. The Wildcats tallied 13 hits in the win.

Kitts went 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI while Carsner was 3-for-5 with three RBI in the win. Leading the way for Mass. Maritime in the setback was senior Tim Conlin (Wareham, Mass.) who went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Sophomore Dan Gilbert (Avenel, N.J.) picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in five innings of work while freshman Ryan Kurth (Chilmark, Mass.)suffered the loss for Mass. In the first game, the Wildcats snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the sixth inning, including a sacrifice fly from junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.). Junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) hit the first homerun at WNEC'sTrelease Memorial Park with a solo shot in the seventh en route to the team's 7-4 win. Junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) went the distance, allowing four runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts. He also had a solid performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run.

In the nightcap, junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and four RBI while freshman Bill Reiss went 1-for-4 with a game-breaking two run double in the five run fifth inning. Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead after a two-run double from junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.). The Wildcats added a single run in the second on an RBI single from junior John MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.). The team then exploded offensively in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs, including a pair of three-run homeruns by freshmen Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) and Bill Reiss (Clinton, Conn.). The game was stopped after the top of the fifth, giving the Wildcats the 10-0 win. Freshman Ryan Ruthinoski (Manorville, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game one hit shutout with eight strikeouts for JWU in the win while Hurley and senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) each had two hits in the victory.

In the nightcap Emerson got on the board first on an RBI single from freshman Lucas Einstein (Mansfield, Mass.). Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring eight runs, including a grand slam from Hurley to take the 8-1 lead. The Wildcats extended their lead in the bottom of the third by scoring six runs, including a two-run double from Carsner and another two-run double from junior Herbert Brown (Nassau, Bahamas). JWU added two more in the bottom of the fourth and cruised to the 16-2 win. Freshman Victor Silva (West Warwick, R.I.) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Hurley drove in four runs while Carsner was 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBI in the win.

Emerson took a 10-7 win in the first game and completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

Emerson jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first game. The Lions scored two in the second and broke out for five in the third, including a two-run home run by sophomore Kylie Catlin (Ashburnham, Mass.). The Lions were ahead 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when Johnson & Wales got on the board with an RBI triple from sophomore Michelle May (Commack, N.Y.). The Wildcats then added four more in the bottom of the fifth, including a three-run double from May to cut the lead to 9-6. Emerson added a run in the top of the seventh and led 10-6 when Johnson & Wales scored in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from senior Lauren Collica (Fishkill, N.Y.). It would not be enough, however as Emerson held on for the 10-7 win. May was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI while sophomore Carly Winer (Westwood, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the setback for JWU. Freshman Julie Jordan (Northboro, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two runs in the win for Emerson.

In the nightcap Emerson once again jumped on the board early, taking a 3-0 lead on a two-run single from sophomore Sara Toga Collings (Wilmington, Mass.). JWU got on the board in the bottom of the second on a two-run double from junior Maggie Knox (Jordan, N.Y.). The Lions responded in the top of the third and then added two more in the top of the fourth on a two-run double from junior Ellen Boss (Dracut, Mass.). Each team added a run late in the game as Emerson took the 7-3 victory. Toga Collings was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Emerson while Knox was 2-for-3 with three RBI for JWU. Freshman Heather Drobiarz (Old Saybrook, N.Y.) pitched a complete game for Emerson, allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

men's volleyball falls to lasell, 3-2 March 29, 2004

Providence, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Lasell in a North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association contest on Monday night at the Harborside RAC. The game was the final home contest for seniors Joe Clemko (Oley, Pa.) and Carlos Velez (San Juan,Puerto Rico).

Lasell took the first game by a score of 30-23 and went up 2-0 after a 30-18 win in game two. The Wildcats responded, however and took game three by a score of 30-26 and knotted the game at two apiece with a commanding 30-17 win in game four. Lasell took the fifth and decisive game 15-10 en route to the 3-2 victory.

Johnson & Wales had three players register double figures in kills, including sophomore Dan Woodside (Norristown, Pa.) who narrowly missed a double-double with 16 kills and nine digs while sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) added a team-high 23 kills. Velez registered 10 kills, five assists and seven digs while sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Mass.) recorded 55 set assists for JWU.

Leading the way for Lasell was senior Chris Morin (Bellingham, Mass.) who recorded a game-high 32 kills and added eight digs and three blocks while freshman Bryan Bobo (Oneida, N.Y.) had 51 set assists, five kills and five digs in the win.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 11-20, 8-10 in the NECVA while Lasell improves to 10-11, 8-10 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 30th when they travel to Roger Williams for a NECVA matchup at 7:00 p.m.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball team posted a pair of impressive wins against Southern Vermont in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Pierce Field. JWU took the first game 11-2 and posted a 9-1 win in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

In the opener, Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Southern Vermont tallied two in the top of the fourth on a two-run single from Brandi Libby to cut the lead to 3-2. Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the fourth, however and tallied eight runs, including an RBI single from junior Karen Thureson (New Britain,Conn.) and an RBI double from Michelle May (Commack, N.Y.). Southern Vermont was unable to score in the top of the fifth and the game was ended due to the eight-run rule. Thureson went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while freshman Kelly Knorr (Willow Grove, Pa.) also went 2-for-4 at the plate for JWU. Freshman Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in five innings while Cassidy Wright suffered the loss for Southern Vermont, allowing 11 runs on eight hits in four innings.

The Wildcats also had a solid game offensively in the nightcap, jumping out to an early 6-0 run before cruising to the 9-1 victory. Junior Dan Howard (Coventry, R.I.) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts for the Wildcats while junior Razy Molina (Roswell, N.M.) suffered the loss for Norwich, allowing seven runs, all earned, on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Dominic Meattey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) was 3-for-3 in the loss for Norwich.

Norwich jumped on the board first in the nightcap with an RBI single from senior C.J. Daley (Orange, Calif.) before the Wildcats responded with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. The visiting Cadets tied the game in the top of the second and the game stayed 2-2 until the bottom of the fourth when the Wildcats scored six runs, five of them unearned, to take the 8-2 lead. The Wildcats would then hold on for the 9-4 victory. Junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win for Johnson & Wales while Daley had two hits in the loss for Norwich. JWU got a complete game from junior Rob Whitten (Enfield, Conn.), allowing four runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts while senior Joshua Creighton (Scituate, Mass.) allowed eight runs, only one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

With the two wins Johnson & Wales improves to 5-7-1, 2-0 in the GNAC while Norwich falls to 2-6 overall, 0-2 in league play. JWU will return to action on Monday, March 29th when they travel to Coast Guard for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.

softball splits gnac doubleheader with emmanuel March 24, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon at Pierce Field. JWU took the first game 2-1 in extra-innings while Emmanuel posted an 8-7 win in the nightcap for the split.

In the opener, the two teams played through three scoreless innings before sophomore Michelle May (Commack,N.Y.), who led off the inning with a walk, scored to give Johnson & Wales a 1-0 lead. The lead would hold until the seventh when Emmanuel tied the game on an RBI single from Kirsten Lane (Haverhill, Mass.). JWU won the game in the ninth after freshman Amanda Lothrop (Middleboro, Mass.) scored on an RBI single from sophomore Carly Winer (Westwood, Mass.). Freshman Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing one unearned run on seven hits in nine innings of work.

Emmanuel jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap before JWU rallied, tying the game with single runs in the second and third. The Saints exploded offensively in the fifth when freshman Christine Sampson (Hull, Mass.) hit a two-run triple, giving Emmanuel the 5-2 lead. Johnson & Wales responded, however and scored four in the top of the sixth, including a two-run double from May and an RBI single from senior Lauren Collica (Fishkill,N.Y.). Emmanuel tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh and after the two teams traded runs in the ninth, the Saints got the win in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI single from sophomore Katherine Palmer Thompson (S. Dennis, Mass.), scoring senior Tara Stanford (Melrose, Mass.) with the game-winning run. Winslow suffered the loss for JWU, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings while Lawrence picked up the win for Emmanuel, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 10.0 innings of work.

With the split Johnson & Wales is now 1-12, 1-1 in the GNAC while Emmanuel stands at 3-6, 1-1 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, March 28th when they host Suffolk in a GNAC twin-bill at 1:00 p.m.at Pierce Field.

baseball falls to fitchburg state, 6-1 March 24, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad fell to Fitchburg State, 6-1 in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Fitchburg State scored the games first run in the top of the second when senior Tim Sullivan, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on an RBI groundout from senior Rusty Shafer. The visiting Falcons tallied two more in the top of the fifth, including what would prove to be the game-winner when Shafer, who led off the inning with a walk, scored an unearned fun. The Falcons then added single runs in six, seventh and ninth innings to take the 6-0 lead. Johnson & Wales mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth when junior Sheldon Kitts (Powell, Ohio) led off with a single and scored on an RBI groundout from pinch hitter Adam Kettle (Coventry, R.I.). That would be all for the Wildcats, however as Fitchburg State held on for the 6-1 victory.

Junior Brett Bodine (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Eric Carsner (Luna Pier, Mich.) each went 2-for-4 for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Tim Raymond and senior Tim Sullivan notched two hits apiece for Fitchburg State.

Junior Rich Terry improved to 2-0 with the win, throwing seven scoreless innings with three hits and five strikeouts while sophomore Dan Gilbert (Avenel, N.J.) fell to 1-1 for the year, allowing four runs, two unearned, on five hits with one strikeout in six innings of work.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 3-6-1 while Fitchburg State improves to 6-3 on the season. JWU will return to action on Friday, March 26th when they travel to Salem State for a non-conference matchup with the Vikings at 3:00 p.m.

softball drops 4-1 decision against fitchburg state March 24, 2004

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. ó The Johnson & Wales University softball team dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision against Fitchburg State in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon.

After two scoreless innings, Fitchburg State got on the board in the top of the third. Freshman Colleen Silva led off with a single and scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Danielle MacDonald. The Falcons would score what would prove to be the game-winning run when sophomore Kristen Bissonnette, who reached on a double, scored on an RBI single from junior Lacy Gillotti. Gillotti later scored an unearned run, Falcons third run of the inning. FSC added an unearned run in the top of the fifth before Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Kelly Knorr (Willow Grove, Pa), scoring senior Lauren Collica (Fishkill, N.Y.). That would be all for JWU however as Fitchburg State held on for the 4-1 victory. Knorr was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the setback for Johnson & Wales while Bissonnette and MacDonald each had two hits in the win for Fitchburg State.

Freshman Michelle Yuille improved her record to 3-1 for the year, pitching a complete game while allowing one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts while JWU freshman Alison Winslow (Milford, N.H.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two of which were unearned, on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 0-11 while Fitchburg improves to 4-4 on the season. JWU will return to action on Saturday, March 27th when they host Emmanuel at Pierce Field in a GNAC doubleheader at 1pm.
