R.I.—The Johnson & Wales
University men’s
volleyball team picked
up a thrilling 3-2 victory
against Wentworth Institute
of Technology on Wednesday
evening in a North Eastern
Collegiate Volleyball Association
contest at the Harborside
RAC.
Johnson & Wales took the first game 30-24 before Wentworth rallied
to tie the match at one game apiece with a 33-31 win in game two. The
Wildcats took game three by a score of 30-24 before Wentworth forced
a fifth and deciding game with a 30-25 win in game four. JWU took the
victory with a 15-10 win in game five.
Sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) led the way with 28 kills,
seven digs and two blocks while sophomore Daniel Woodside (Norristown,
Pa.) recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs. Senior Carlos
Velez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied a game-high 64 set assists in the
win for the Wildcats
Leading the way for Wentworth was sophomore Dominic Szpyrka (Rochester,
N.Y.) who tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs while junior
Bobby Jones (Billerica, Mass.) added 12 kills and eight digs in the setback.
Freshman Dennis Zomar (Marlborough, Mass.) recorded 38 set assists for
the Leopards.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 10-17, 7-7 in the NECVA
while Wentworth falls to 6-16, 5-9 in league play. The Wildcats will
return to action on Saturday, March 20th when they travel to Elms for
a NECVA matchup at 2:00 p.m.
men’s volleyball downs mit, 3-2 March 13, 2004
Providence, R.I.—The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball team picked up a hard-fought 3-2 decision against The Massachusetts
Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in a North Eastern Collegiate
Volleyball Association contest at the Harborside RAC.
MIT took the first game 30-23 before Johnson & Wales responded with
a 30-26 win in the second game. The visiting Engineers posted a 30-25
win in game three, taking a 2-1 advantage in the best of five match.
The Wildcats responded, however and posted a commanding 30-16 win in
game four before taking a 19-17 victory in the fifth and deciding game
for the thrilling 3-2 win.
Sophomore Daniel Woodside (Norristown, Pa.) recorded a double-double
with 16 points and 10 digs while freshman John Kubilis (Worcester, Mass.)
also registered a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 15 digs
in the victory. Senior Carlos Velez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied a
team-high 19 kills while sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.)
also had a solid game with 16 kills in the win for the Wildcats. Sophomore
David Santos (East Hartford, Conn.) registered 56 set assists, eight
digs and five kills in the JWU victory.
Leading the way for MIT was junior Rob McAndrew (Dublin, Ohio) who tallied
a game-high 23 kills and added nine digs while junior Kabir Mukaddam
(Cambridge, Mass.) had 19 kills and seven digs in the setback. Sophomore
Jordan Wan (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) registered 55 set assists, 10 digs
and three kills in the loss for the Engineers.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 9-17, 6-7 in the NECVA
while MIT falls to 12-13, 9-9 in league play. The Wildcats will return
to action on Wednesday, March 17th when they host Wentworth in a NECVA
a matchup at 7:00 p.m.

men's volleyball falls to endicott, 3-0 February 27, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision against Endicott in a North Eastern
Collegiate Volleyball Association/New England Division contest at the
Harborside RAC on Friday evening. Endicott took the match by sweeping
the game by scores of 30-22, 30-18 and 30-24.
Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the setback was sophomore
James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) who tallied a game-high 15 kills
and added five digs and two blocks while fellow sophomore David Santos
(East Hartford, Conn.) tallied 21 set assists, three digs and three blocks
for the Wildcats. Junior Jeremy Fontaine (Belchertown, Mass.) led the
way for Endicott with 13 kills, six digs and an outstanding .409 hitting
percentage while freshman Eddie Marchand (Wakefield, R.I.) added 11 kills
and five digs for the Gulls.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 7-13 for the season, 5-6
in the NECVA while Endicott improves to 11-7, 11-2 in league play. The
Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 9th when they travel
to Newbury for a NECVA New England matchup at 7:00 p.m.
men’s basketball advances to gnac championship February
26, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball
advanced to the Championship Game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference
on Thursday evening with an 80-68 victory against Emerson in the semifinals
of the conference tournament at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Center.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) scored a game-high 41 points
and added three rebounds and two steals while junior Sam Tamargo (Los
Angeles, Calif.) added 14 points and four assists in the victory. Leading
the way for Emerson in the setback was senior Robert Hennigan (Worcester,
Mass.) who tallied 23 points and added three rebounds and three assists
while sophomore Steve Georgoulis (New York, N.Y.) added 11 points and
a team-high seven rebounds in the setback.
The two teams traded leads early on before Emerson used a 12-5 run,
capped by a pair of free throws from Georgoulis to take a 23-16 lead
with 6:16 left in the first half. The Wildcats responded, however and
tied the game on a three-pointer from Tamargo with 2:12 left in the first
half. JWU then ran off five unanswered points and took the 35-30 lead
into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as the two teams traded leads
five times in the first ten minutes. With the game tied at 49-49 with
10:24 left, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run and took their largest lead
of the second half, 56-49 on a three-pointer from Russell with 9:21 left
in the game. Johnson & Wales continued to build on the advantage,
however Emerson got to with five points after a conventional three-point
play from Hennigan made the score 65-60 with 3:19 left in the contest.
That would be as close as the Lions would get, however as Johnson & Wales
held on for the 80-68 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 20-7 while Emerson falls
to 14-13 for the year. The Wildcats will host Southern Vermont, who defeated
Norwich in the other GNAC Semifinal on Tuesday, at the Harborside RAC
on Saturday, February 28th at 1:00 p.m.
basketball eliminated from gnac tournament with 65-48 loss against
emmanuel February 3, 2004
Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball squad was eliminated from the GNAC Tournament after dropping
a 65-48 decision against Emmanuel in the Quarterfinals at the Holmes
Sports Center in Boston, Mass., on Wednesday evening.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was senior Socorro Cronan (Providence,
R.I.) who nearly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds
while junior Karen Thureson (New Britain, Conn.) added a team-high 13
points and five assists in the setback for the Wildcats.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Emmanuel,
the regular season GNAC Champions, rallied with a 21-0 run and closed
out the half with a 37-17 advantage.
The visiting Wildcats outscored Emmanuel by a 31-28 margin in the second
half, but it was not enough as Emmanuel took the 65-48 victory.
Johnson & Wales wrapped up with regular season with a 7-19 overall
record, 6-6 in league play.
men’s basketball advances to gnac semifinals with 103-69
win against rivier February 24, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) set
a new Johnson & Wales single-game record with 50 points in the Wildcats
impressive 103-69 victory against Rivier in the Quarterfinals of the
Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament at the Harborside Recreation
and Athletic Center on Tuesday afternoon. The 50 points eclipsed the
previous JWU record of 47, scored by Ed Rezendes against Anna Maria during
the 1997 campaign. Russell also hit nine three pointers, breaking his
own school record of eight set against Norwich last season.
Sophomore Brian Fernandes (Fall River, Mass.) was the only other Johnson & Wales
player in double figures with 12 points, three assists and two rebounds
while senior Chris Anderson (Wentzville, Mo.) added seven points and
a game-high nine rebounds in the win for the Wildcats. Rivier freshman
John McMahon (Somerville, Mass.) scored a team-high 22 points and added
three rebounds and two assists while junior Jeffrey Miller (Nashua, N.H.)
added 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds in the setback.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to the early lead and took its first
double-figure advantage on a three-pointer from Russell, giving the Wildcats
a 15-4 lead with 13:08 left in the first half. Rivier responded, however
and cut the lead to just six points when a layup from McMahon made the
score 36-30 with 2:49 left in the first half. JWU closed out the first
half with a 9-4 run and took the 47-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The host Wildcats continued to build on their lead and got up by 22
on a three-pointer from Russell with 12:56 left in the contest. Russell
tallied his 50th point on a layup with 1:46 left in the game and Johnson & Wales
cruised to the 103-69 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 19-7 while Rivier finishes
the 2003-04 campaign with 9-16 mark. JWU, the No. 1 seed for the tournament
will face the winner of No. 4 Suffolk vs. No. 5 Emerson on Thursday,
February 26th at the Harborside RAC at 7:00 p.m.
volleyball standout james collins named necva player of the week February
24, 2004
Providence, R.I.— Johnson & Wales University men’s volleyball
standout James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) was named the North Eastern
Collegiate Volleyball Association New England Division Player of the
Week for February 24th. Collins received six of the ten votes among the
conference coaches to earn the accolade.
Collins averaged 4.5 kills and 1.10 blocks per game for the week, and
hit at an astounding .323 percent. In the thrilling five game marathon
against Lehman, he joined the 30 kill club and his for a.404 percentage
in the 3-2 win. The talented outside hitter was named to the Gothic Knight
Invitational All-Tournament team for his performance over the weekend,
leading the Wildcats to a 3rd place finish.
Collins and the Wildcats are currently 7-12 for the season, 5-5 in the
NECVA. The team will return to action on Friday, February 25th when they
host Endicott at the Harborside RAC at 7:00 p.m.
men’s volleyball defeats lasell, 3-0 February 18, 2004
Providence, R.I.—The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball team picked up a 3-0 shutout victory on the road against Lasell
in a North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association contest on Monday
night. The Wildcats swept the match with games of 30-28, 30-28 and 30-24.
Johnson & Wales had the players register double figures in kills,
including sophomore Brandon Blanchet (Methuen, Mass.) who tallied 10
kills, two digs and three blocks while sophomore Dan Woodside (Norristown,
Pa.) had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs in the win for the
Wildcats. Sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) added a game-high
19 kills while sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Mass.) recorded
58 set assists for JWU.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 7-12, 5-5 in the NECVA.
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, February 27th when they
when they host Endicott at the Harborside RAC in a GNAC contest at 7:00
p.m.
wrestling places sixth at necwwa championship February 22, 2004
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling
team notched a sixth-place finish at the NECCWA Championship, held at
Worcester Polytechnic Institute this weekend. The Wildcats notched 74
points for the six-place finish in the 15 team field.
Leading the way for the Wildcats were juniors Tim Ruberg (Harrison,
Ohio) and Ryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) who reached the finals of the
tournament. Ruberg captured the New England College Conference Wrestling
Association Championships and received a bid to the upcoming NCAA Championship
by winning the 174 pound event. After losing in the sixth round, Ruberg
came through the losers bracket and defeated Brian Viglione of Springfield
twice in the finals to take the title and the NCAA automatic bid. Ruberg
went 6-1 for the event.
Lenhardt also came out of the losers bracket and posted a 4-2 record
for the championship, including a loss in the finals due to an injury.
Freshman Joe Boucher (Salem, N.H.) also had a strong showing at 157 pounds,
taking fifth place with a 4-2 record while sophomore Chris Wells (Lake
Hiawatha, N.J.) also recorded four wins en route to a third-place finish.
Ruberg will compete at the NCAA Division III National Championship on
March 5th through 6th at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

team wrapped up the 2003-04 campaign with a 2-2 tie against Wentworth
in an ECAC Northeast contest at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North

captain Alex Marinkovich (Kelowna, British Columbia), assisted by sophomore
Vince Guiducci (Hamilton, Ontario ) with just 1:40 remaining in the second

men’s basketball captures gnac regular season championship
with 66-59 win over southern vermont February 21, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball
team captured the school’s first ever Great Northeast Athletic
Conference regular season championship with a 66-59 victory against Southern
Vermont at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic Center on Saturday
afternoon. The game was the final regular season home game for JWU seniors
Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) and Chris Anderson (Wentzville, Mo.).
Russell scored a game-high 21 points and added three rebounds, three
assists, three blocks and five steals while junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles,
Calif.) added 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals
in the win for the Wildcats. Leading the way for freshman Nick Harrington
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds
while sophomore Sean Key (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 15 points and eight boards
for Southern Vermont.
The two teams battled back and forth early on in the game with five
lead changes in the first 10 minutes. The visiting Mountaineers held
a 21-20 advantage after a three-pointer freshman Chris Matte (Hudson
Falls, N.Y.) with 4:39 left in the half. Johnson & Wales then used
an 11-4 run to close out the half, taking a 31-25 advantage into the
locker room at halftime.
Southern Vermont responded early in the second half and regained the
lead at 42-39 after a layup from senior Sean Ezell (Gary, Ind.) with
14:12 left in the game. The Wildcats trailed 46-45 midway through the
second half before using a 6-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore
Victor Purnell (Los Angeles, Calif.) to take a 51-46 lead with 9:16 left
in the contest. The two teams then traded baskets before Southern Vermont
cut the lead to just three points after a breaway dunk from Enzell made
the game 57-54 with 1:52 left on the clock. That would be as close as
the Mountaineers would get, however as Tamargo hit six of seven free
throws in the final 1:30 to seal the 66-59 victory.
Johnson & Wales improved to 18-7 overall 15-3 in the GNAC while
Southern Vermont falls to 16-9, 14-4 in league play. The Wildcats will
return to action on Tuesday, February 24th when they host Rivier in the
quarterfinals of the GNAC tournament at 7:00 p.m.

women’s basketball defeats southern vermont, 96-38

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball
team posted an impressive 96-38 victory against Southern Vermont in a
Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation
and Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The game was the final regular
season contest for JWU senior Socorro Cronan (Providence, R.I.).
Cronan tallied a season-high 36 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while
junior Laci Lance (San Diego, Calif.) was the only other Wildcat in double
figures with 10 points and two rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
Leading the way for Southern Vermont was junior Cassidy Wright (Sharon
Springs, N.Y.) who tallied 21 points and added six rebounds in the setback.
JWU held a10-8 lead with 13:00 left in the first half before using a
27-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding 37-8 lead after
a layup from Cronan with 5:56 left in the first half. The Wildcats took
a 49-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as Johnson & Wales continued
to build on their lead, cruised to the 96-38 victory.
Johnson & Wales shot an impressive 51.9% from the field while holding
the visiting Mountaineers to 29.2% with 30 turnovers. All but one player
scored at least one point for JWU.
Johnson & Wales improved to 7-18 overall, 6-6 in the GNAC while
Southern Vermont falls to 1-22, 1-12 in league play. The Wildcats will
return to action on Wednesday, February 25th when travel to Emmanuel
for the quarterfinals of the GNAC tournament at 7:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball
team picked up a 70-58 victory over Western New England in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference contest on the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Complex on Thursday evening.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for the Wildcats
with a game-high 21 points and three assists while sophomore Brian Fernandes
(Fall River, Mass.) added 14 points and two rebounds in the win. Sophomore
Conor Moran (Rio deJaniero, Brazil) was the games leading rebounder with
seven and added five points for the Wildcats. Leading the way for Western
New England was junior Mike Cutler (Amherst, Mass.) who tallied a team-high
14 points and added six rebounds, three assists and three steals while
sophomore Jon Godbout (Bristol, Conn.) was also in double figures with
13 points in the setback for the Golden Bears.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half with
four lead changes. Western New England held a 23-20 lead after a three-pointer
from sophomore Matt Cigliello (Monroe Township, N.J.) with 3:38 left
in the first half. Johnson & Wales responded with a 6-1 run to close
out the first half and took a 26-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson & Wales used a 15-7 run to open the second half and took
their first double digit lead of the contest after a jumper from Fernandes
with 15:12 left in the game. The Wildcats extended their lead to 14 points
(50-36) after a conventional three-point play from Russell with 11:51
left in the contest. WNEC cut the lead to six points after a three-pointer
from senior Gerry Toney (West Hartford, Conn.). That would be as close
as the Golden Bears would get however as JWU held on for the 70-58 win.
For the game, Johnson & Wales shot 49.1% from the field and held
WNEC to just 37.1% shooting. JWU shot 0-9 from behind the three-point
stripe in the first half.
Johnson & Wales improves to 17-7 and 14-3 in the GNAC while Western
New England falls to 11-7 on the season, 9-8 in league play. The Wildcats
will wrap-up for the regular season on Saturday, February 21st when they
host Southern Vermont at 3:00 p.m. JWU and Southern Vermont are tied
fir first-place in the league standings and the game will determine the
regular-season conference champion and the No. 1 seed for the duration
of the playoffs.

Providence, R.I.—The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball team picked up an impressive 3-1 victory against Emmanuel
in a North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association contest on Wednesday
night at the Harborside RAC. The Saints came into the game in first-place
in the New England Division and ranked No. 10 in the latest NECVA poll.
Emmanuel took the early 1-0 lead after a 31-29 victory in game one.
JWU responded, however and took three straight by scored of 30-18, 30-28
and 30-24 to take the 3-1 win.
Johnson & Wales freshman John Kubilis (Worcester, Mass.) led the
way with 19 kills, six digs and four blocks while sophomore James Collins
(East Hartford, Conn.) added 16 kills and 11 blocks (3 solo, 8 assisted)
in the win. Sophomore Brandon Blanchet (Methuen, Mass.) was also in double
figures with 15 kills while sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Mass.)
recorded 54 set assists for JWU. The Wildcats hit at an impressive .238
percentage for the game with a season-high 12 blocks.
Leading the way for Emmanuel was sophomore who tallied 15 kills and
added five digs while junior Michael Mazur (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a
double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs in the setback for the Saints.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 4-1, 4-5 in the NECVA while
Emmanuel falls to 8-4, 6-1 in league play. The Wildcats will return to
action on Saturday, February 21st when they travel to New Jersey City
University for the Gotham Invitational, starting at 9:00 a.m.
women’s basketball upends emerson, 84-54 February 17, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team posted an impressive 84-54 victory against Emerson in
a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation
and Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
Johnson & Wales had three players in double figures as senior Socorro
Cronan (Providence, R.I.) and freshman Alex Ventura (Dorchester, Mass.)
each scored 15 points while freshman Nicole Milton (Windsor, Conn.) added
11 points. Ventura had a solid all around game for the Wildcats, adding
a team-high seven rebounds while dishing off five assists in the victory.
Leading the way for Emerson in the setback was sophomore Molly O’Keefe
(Yonkers, N.Y.) who scored a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds
while freshman Samantha Shirley (West Springfield, Mass.) narrowly missed
a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
The two teams battled back and forth with three lead changes and Johnson & Wales
clinging to a 17-16 lead with 9:05 left in the first half. The Wildcats
then used a 13-2 run, capped by a jumper from Milton to take a 30-18
lead with 4:48 left in the half. JWU led by as many as 15 in the first
half and took a 41-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson & Wales opened the second half on a 10-0 run and took a
51-27 lead on a layup from sophomore Dawn Knowles (Dexter, N.Y.) with
17:15 left in the game. The Wildcats continued to build on their advantage
and led by as many as 37 points late after a jumper from freshman Meredith
Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) gave them a 77-40 lead with 4:52 left
in the game. JWU then cruised to the 84-54 win.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 6-18, 5-6 in the Great
Northeast Athletic Conference while Emerson falls to 3-17, 2-9 in league
play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 21st when
they host Southern Vermont in the regular season finale at the Harborside

men's volleyball falls to newbury, 3-2 February

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Newbury in a North
Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association contest at the Harborside RAC
on Monday evening.
Newbury took the first game by a score of 33-31 and went up 2-0 after
a 30-26 win in the second game. The host Wildcats responded, however
and posted a 30-26 win in the third game before tying the match at 2-2
after a 30-27 win in the fourth game. In the fifth and deciding game
of the match, Newbury took the 15-13 win for the 3-2 victory.
Johnson & Wales sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) led
the way for Johnson & Wales with a game-high 22 kills and added one
service ace and one block. Sophomore Daniel Woodside (Norristown, Pa.)
recorded a double-double with 20 kills, 10 digs and five service aces
while freshman John Kubilis (Worcester, Mass.) also recorded a double-double
with 13 kills and 13 digs in the setback. Sophomore David Santos (East
Hartford, Conn.) registered a season-best 60 set assists in the loss
for the Wildcats.
Leading the way for Newbury was freshman Ken McNeely (Forest Hill, Md.)
who tallied 18 kills and three blocks while senior Eric Mattos (Holyoke,
Mass.) added 15 kills in the win. Sophomore Dan LaSalle (Rumford, R.I.)
tallied 41 set assists and added 11 digs for Newbury.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 3-11, 3-5 in the NEVCA while
Newbury improves to 4-6, 2-4 in league play. The Wildcats will return
to action on Wednesday, February 18th when they host Emmanuel in a NECVA
matchup at 7:00 p.m.

New Haven, Conn. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team dropped a 78-59 decision against Albertus Magnus at the
Cosgrove Messer Gym in New Haven, Conn., in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference matchup on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales junior Laci Lance (San Diego, Calif.) scored a team-high
13 points and added three assists while sophomore Melissa Fidalgo (Bridgeport,
Conn.) added 12 points and seven boards in the setback for the Wildcats.
Leading the way for Albertus Magnus was Natalia Perlaza who registered
a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds
Johnson & Wales shot just 35% from the field and committed 20 turnovers
in the loss while Albertus Magnus shot 45% from the field and also had
a 41-35 advantage on the boards.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 5-17, 4-6 in the Great Northeast
Athletic Conference. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February

107-76 win over albertus magnus February14, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) scored
a career-high 44 points to become Johnson & Wales all-time leading
scorer in the Wildcats 107-76 victory against Albertus Magnus in a Great
Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation and
Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. Russell now has 1,179 career
points in just two seasons, eclipsing the previous mark of 1,169 set
by Anthony Williams from 1995-1999.
Johnson & Wales junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered
a double with 11 points and 10 assists while sophomore Brian Fernandes
(Fall River, Calif.) added 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and
two steals in the win. Junior Wascar Viscaino (Providence, R.I.) narrowly
missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes
off the bench for the Wildcats. Leading the way for Albertus Magnus was
freshman Chris Keslow (Torrington, Conn.) who registered a double-double
with 15 points and 10 rebounds while senior Curtis Miller (New Haven,
Conn.) added 17 points, four rebounds and five assists in the setback
for the Falcons.
The two teams traded baskets early with JWU holding a 20-18 lead with
13:08 left in the half. The Wildcats then used a 12-4 run, taking their
first double-digit lead after a free throw from senior Chris Anderson
(Wentzville, Mo.) with 7:27 left in the half. Johnson & Wales held
a nine point lead at 38-29 before closing out the half on a 16-6 run
to take the 54-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson & Wales continued to build on its lead early in the second
half, taking a 30-point lead (74-44) after a three-pointer from Russell
with 14:05 left in the game. Russell then scored five straight before
nailing a three-pointer with 10:41 left in the game to become the school’s
all-time leading scorer. The Wildcats lead grew to as many as 41 late
in the game before taking the 107-76 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 16-7 for the season, 13-3
in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 3-19, 3-13 in league play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team dropped a hard fought 80-68 decision against Bridgewater
State in a non-conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Center on Thursday evening.
Johnson & Wales junior Laci Lance (San Diego, Calif.) scored 16
points while freshman Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) also tallied
16 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the setback. Sophomore Dawn
Knowles (Dexter, N.Y.) pulled down 10 rebounds and added six points,
four assists and three steals while sophomore Melissa Fidalgo (Bridgeport,
Conn.) was also in double figures for the Wildcats with 12 points and
six boards. Bridgewater State junior Jessica Worden (Rockland, Mass.)
tallied a game-high 27 points and narrowly missed a double-double with
nine rebounds while junior Erin Lantry (Fitchburg, Mass.) added 14 points
and five boards in the victory.
The two teams traded leads back and forth throughout the early stages
of the game before Bridgewater used a 10-1 run to take a 28-19 lead after
a jumper from senior Tricia Perdergast (Braintree, Mass.) with 7:41 left
in the first half. Johnson & Wales responded, however and cut the
lead to just four points when a jumper from Lance made the score 35-31
with 3:17 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales shot 50% from the
field and was perfect from the three-point stripe (1-1) and the free-throw
line (2-2), yet trailed 44-33 at the half.
Bridgewater State pushed the lead up to 17 points after a layup from
Katelyn Hart (Somerset, Mass.) made the score 70-53 with 7:57 left in
the game. JWU climbed back to 13 after a jumper from Sullivan made the
score 72-59 with 5:07 left on the clock. The visiting Bears responded,
however with a 5-0 run and held on for the 80-68 victory.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 5-17 on the season while
Bridgewater State improves to 10-10 for the year. The Wildcats will return

BOSTON, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
basketball squad posted a 68-58 victory against Emerson in a key Great
Northeast Athletic Conference matchup in Boston, Mass., on Thursday evening.
The win allowed the Wildcats to remain tied for first place in the conference
while the victory was the 15th of the season, setting a school record
during the regular season while the 12 conference wins also sets a new
school mark.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with a team-high 20 points while sophomore Brian Fernandes (Fall River,
Mass.) added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists in the win for
the Wildcats.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 15-7 overall, 12-3 in the
GNAC. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 14th when

ice hockey falls to fitchburg state, 5-4 February 11, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University ice hockey
team dropped a 5-4 decision against Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast
matchup at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North Smithfield, R.I.,
on Wednesday evening.
Fitchburg State got on the board first when sophomore Steve Clarkin
(Fitchburg, Mass.) put in a pass from sophomore Michael McSweeney (Canton,
Mass.), giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead 15:54 into the first period. Johnson & Wales
responded quickly, however, when sophomore Tom Webster (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) scored with an assist from junior Will Meyer (Enfield, N.H.)
at the 16:10 mark. JWU took the lead when Meyer connected on a pass from
freshman Zach Cobb (Dover, N.H.), giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage
at the end of the first period.
JWU built on their lead in the second period when Meyer scored his second
of the evening on assists from junior Eric Robertson (Anchorage, Alaska)
and senior Alan Rigatti (Staten Island, N.Y.). Fitchburg State responded
with a pair of goals from sophomore Mike Krul (Ashburnham, Mass.) and
junior Chad Fletcher (Whitinsville, Mass.) to knot the game at 3-3 midway
through the second period. The two teams then traded goals Cobb scoring
for JWU at the 12:33 mark to take the 4-3 lead before the Falcons tied
the game again on a goal from Savastano at the 17:13 mark.
Freshman Mike Dryer scored the game-winner on a power play with just
1:15 left in the third period, putting in a rebound from the blue line
from Rob Zapf (Billerica, Mass.) and Bobby LeBlanc (Leominster, Mass.),
giving the Falcons the 5-4 win.
Freshman Sean Hershman (Clifton, Va.) made 23 stops in goal for Johnson & Wales
while sophomore Dan Gemme (Worcester, Mass.) had 17 saves for Fitchburg
State in the win.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 1-20-1, 1-11-1 in the ECAC
Northeast, while Fitchburg State improves to 7-11-2, 5-6-2 in league

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team posted an impressive 82-31 victory against Pine Manor
in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation
and Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
Johnson & Wales junior Laci Lance (San Diego, Calif.) scored a game-high
24 points, including a career-best six three pointers while fellow junior
Karen Thureson (New Britain, Conn.) was the only other Wildcat in double-figures
with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds. Pine Manor senior Vicki
Maes (Lynn, Mass.) tallied eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds in
the setback for the Gators.
With the game tied 4-4 early on, the Wildcats used a 16-6 run to take
their first double-digit lead on a layup from sophomore Dawn Knowles
(Dexter, N.Y.), taking a 20-10 lead with 8:28 left in the first half.
JWU then used a 23-0 run to close out the half, holding the Gators scoreless
to take the 43-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as Johnson & Wales increased
their lead to 40 after a layup from freshman Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough,
Mass.) with 13:34 left in the contest. The host Wildcats then cruised
to the 82-31 win.
Pine Manor had more turnovers (33) than points (31) from the game and
shot just 17.5% from the field. Six different players had at least five
points with all but one player scoring at least one point in the win
for JWU.

Utah) who scored 18 points while junior Michael Hale (Scituate, Mass.)
added 13 points and five rebounds in the setback
JWU jumped out to an early lead and held a 21-6 advantage after a three-pointer
from Russell with 12:35 left in the half. The Wildcats grew their lead
to 20 points late in the first half after a layup from Russell gave them
a 44-24 lead with 2:57 left. Johnson & Wales took the 48-27 lead
into the locker room at halftime.
Emmanuel responded in the second half, however and used a 22-5 run to
cut the lead to single digits (56-49) after a three-pointer from Brown
with 11:09 left in the game. The visiting Saints would get as close as
two after a layup from junior Argenis Mendez (Roslindale, Mass.) made
the score 58-56 with 8:20 on the clock. That would be as close as they
would get, however as the Wildcats used a 22-6 run in the closing minutes
to take the 80-62 victory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball notched a 92-35 win against Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Center.
Every player in the Johnson & Wales lineup scored at least one point
for the afternoon, including five players in double-figures. Junior Laci
Lance (San Diego, Calif.) led the way with 19 points, including five
three pointers while junior Karen Thureson (New Britain, Conn.) added
14 points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds in the victory.
Sophomore Shatoya Greene (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tallied a season-high 11
points and added eight steals and five rebounds in the win for Johnson & Wales.
Senior Beth Angeletti (Madison, Conn.) led the way for Daniel Webster
with a double-double on 10 points and 11 rebounds while junior Kerri
Fadden (Townsend, Mass.) added 10 points and eight rebounds in the setback.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead on a 20-0 run, capped
by a layup from Greene with 11:48 left in the first half. JWU continued
to build on their lead and took a 45-14 advantage into the locker room
at halftime. Daniel Webster had 18 first half turnovers and shot just
22.7 % from the field while Johnson & Wales controlled the boards
with a 26-15 advantage and shot 50% from the floor.
It was more of the same in the second half with Johnson & Wales
using a 9-0 run to start the second half to take their first 40-point
lead of the game. The Wildcats continued to build their advantage throughout
the second half and cruised to the 92-35 win. The 92 points represents
the team’s highest point total this season.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 4-16, 3-5 in the Great
Northeast Athletic Conference while Daniel Webster falls to 1-10, 0-5
in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February

ice hockey falls in overtime, 3-2 against plymouth state PROVIDENCE,

The Johnson & Wales University hockey team dropped a hard fought
3-2 overtime decision against Plymouth State in an ECAC Northeast contest
at the Rhode Island Sports Center on Friday evening.
Plymouth State got on the board first when sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford,
Mass.) put in a pass from senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) just
12 seconds into the game, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Johnson & Wales
responded quickly, however when junior Eric Roberton (Anchorage, Alaska)
scored on an assist from senior Matt O’Connor (Plaistow, N.H.)
at the 36 second mark. The two teams then battled scoreless through the
remainder of the first period. PSU regained the lead on a goal from junior
Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.), taking a 2-1 lead at the 10:06 mark of
the second period. The Panthers held the 2-1 lead until late the third
period when O’Connor put in a rebounded shot from Robertson after
a pass from senior Alan Rigatti (Staten Island, N.Y.) tying the game
with a power play goal at the 13:54 mark.
The game ended 2-2 at the end of regulation and just :52 into the overtime
period, Plymouth States Kane tallied his second goal of the game from
Jackson and sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.), giving the
Panthers the 3-2 win. Freshman Sean Hershman (Clifton, Va.) made 46 saves
in goal for JWU while Plymouth State freshman Trevor Cherry (Greenland,
N.H.) had 39 stops in the win.

Boston, Mass.—The Johnson & Wales University men’s volleyball
team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Wentworth on the road
in a North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association matchup on Tuesday
evening.
Johnson & Wales took the first two games by scores of 30-21 and
30-25 before Wentworth responded with a 30-22 win in the third and 30-26
win in the fourth, forcing a fifth and deciding game where the host Leopards
posted a 15-13 win.
Sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Conn.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with 18 kills while fellow sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.)
also had a solid game with 16 kills in the setback for the Wildcats.
Senior Carlos Velez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) registered 54 set assists
for JWU.

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball squad dropped a 66-48 decision against Suffolk in a Great
Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Tuesday
evening.
Johnson & Wales sophomore Melissa Fidalgo (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored
a team-high 14 points and added a game-best 13 rebounds for a double
while fellow sophomore Dawn Knowles (Dexter, N.Y.) also had a double-double
with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the setback for the Wildcats. Junior
Allison Fox (South Easton, Mass.) tallied a game-high 17 points and added
six rebounds while freshman Jenn Fog (Stonington, Conn.) added a double-double
with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win for Suffolk.
Suffolk jumped out to an early lead and took its first double-digit
lead of the game on a layup from Fogg with 7:47 left in the first half,
taking a 20-10 advantage. The visiting Rams closed out the first half
on a 7-0 run and took a 31-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half with the Rams taking their
largest advantage of the contest, 54-25 after a pair of free throws from
Fox. JWU cut the lead to 17 on a layup from junior Denise Ferebee (Mays
Landing, N.J.) with 2:48 left, but that would be as close as the Wildcats
would get as Suffolk took the 66-48 victory.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 3-15, 2-4 in the GNAC while
Suffolk improves to 13-4, 3-1 in league play. The Wildcats will return

NORWICH, Vt. -- Johnson & Wales junior guard Karen Thuerson (New
Britain, Conn.) sunk a critical free-throw with 1.1 second remaining
in a tie game to seal the victory as Johnson and Wales beat Norwich University
53-52 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon
in Andrews Hall.
Johnson & Wales fell behind early and trailed 14-3 midway through
the first half before rallying to cut the deficit to 30-23 at halftime.
The Wildcats continued to chip away at the lead, finally taking a 50-49
advantage after a pair of free throws from freshman Meredith Sullivan
(Lanesborough, Mass.) with 2:00 left in the contest. After falling behind
52-49 on three free throws, JWU knotted the game at 52-52 on a jumper
in the lane from Sullivan with just :28 left in the contest. After Johnson & Wales
regained possession on a Norwich turnover, Thureson was fouled with just
1.1 seconds left on the clock. Thureson missed her first but drained
the second, giving the visiting Wildcats a 53-52 lead. The Cadets were
unable to get a shot off at the buzzer, giving the Wildcats the win.
Freshman Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with 13 points while senior Soccoro Cronan (Providence, RI) added 10
points in the win for the Wildcats.

NORWICH, Vt. --The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team
dropped a hard-fought 80-75 decision against Norwich University in a
Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Andrews Hall on Saturday
afternoon.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
while sophomore Brian Fernandes (Fall River, Mass.) added 19 and junior
Conor Moran (Rio De Janerio, Brazil) had 14 in the setback for the Wildcats.
Norwich was led by junior Tim Shedd who tallied a double-double with
14 points 12 rebounds
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and had a 13-point advantage
(31-18) with 4:07 left in the first half. The Wildcats took a 33-24 lead
into the locker room at halftime. Norwich responded in the second half,
however and took their first lead of the game, 48-47 with just over 1:00
left in the game. The host Cadets led by 59-51 with 2:07 left in the
game. JWU responded with a 9-2 spurt and trailed just 61-60 after a three-pointer
from Fernandes with eight seconds left in regulation.
A pair of free-throws from Matt Johnson gave the Cadets a 63-60 lead
with just four seconds left in the game. Fernandes than drilled another
three-pointer as time expired to tie the game at 63-63 at the end of
regulation. Norwich scored the first two baskets of the extra five minute
period and never trailed, taking the 80-75 win.

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision against Endicott in a New England
Collegiate Volleyball Association contest in Beverly, Mass., on Saturday
afternoon. Endicott swept the Wildcats by scores of 30-23, 30-23 and
36-34
Sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Conn.) registered a double-double
with a 11 kills and a team-high 11 digs while fellow sophomore James
Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) tallied a team-best 15 kills and added

(San Juan, Puerto Rico) notched a game-high 44 set assists for JWU.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling
squad took two victories in a tri-match with Wesleyan and Southern Maine
at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic Center in Providence, R.I.
on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats defeated Southern Maine 26-24 and
then took a 24-16 win against Wesleyan, posting a 2-0 record for the
day. In the final match of the afternoon, Wesleyan defeated Southern
Maine, 22-21.
Sophomore Chris Wells (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.), junior Tim Ruberg (Harrison,
Ohio) and junior Ryan Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) each recorded two wins

Boston, Mass. – Johnson & Wales University senior Rohan Russell
(Providence, R.I.) scored his 1,000th career point for the Wildcats in
a 65-58 victory on the road against Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference matchup at the Holmes Sports Center on Thursday night.
Russell led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points and added four rebounds
while junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles, Calif.) was also in double-figures
with 12 points, three assists and two steals. Russell becomes just the
fourth player in school history to reach the 1,000 point plateau, reaching
the milestone in just two seasons for the Wildcats. Junior Clinton McCalla
(Augusta, Ga.) narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and
nine rebounds in the win for Johnson & Wales while Albert Hayle notched
a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the setback for Emmanuel
Johnson & Wales trailed 36-20 at the half before responding with
45 second-half points to take the 65-58 win.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team dropped a 90-48 decision against No. 9 Eastern Connecticut
in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Center on Thursday evening.
Freshman Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) scored a team-high
14 points and added five points for Johnson & Wales while sophomore
Dawn Knowles (Dexter, N.Y.) added nine points, four boards, two assists
and two steals in the setback. Senior Allison Coleman (Jewitt City, Conn.)
led the way for Eastern Connecticut with 17 points, eight rebounds and
four assists while sophomore Katie Kline (North Brookfield, Mass.) added
15 points and eight rebounds in the win for the Warriors.
The two teams battled evenly through the early parts of the first half
with Eastern Connecticut holding a 10-8 lead at the 14:22 mark. The Warriors
then used a 10-0 run during the next three minutes, to take the 20-8
lead midway through the first half. Eastern Connecticut then used a 12-4
run over a three minute span to take a 20-point lead (32-12) with 6:59
left in the half. A 5-0 run from the Wildcats cut the lead to just 15
(32-17) on a layup from Sullivan with 4:49 left in the first half. That
would be as close as the Wildcats would get however as Eastern Connecticut
took a 45-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Eastern Connecticut opened the second half on an 8-0 run, taking a 30-point
lead advantage on a layup from senior Deanne Prior (Scituate, R.I.).
The Warriors would then cruise down the stretch to the 90-42 victory.
Eastern Connecticut had a 56-35 advantage on the boards and shot 53.4%
from the field for the contest.
Johnson & Wales falls to 2-14 for the year while Eastern Connecticut
improves to 16-2 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on

NASHUA, N.H. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 78-65 victory
against Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Tuesday
evening.
Freshman Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with 23 points and 10 doubles for her first double-double of the season
while sophomore Melissa Fidalgo (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 16 points for
the Wildcats. Freshman Alex Ventura (Dorchester, Mass.) and junior Karen
Thureson (New Britain, Conn.) were each in double-figures with 11 and
10 points respectively in the victory.
The Wildcats trailed by 41-33 at halftime, however rallied in the second
half and held the Raiders to just 24 second-half points to secure the
victrory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Senior Chris Anderson (Wentzville, Mo.) became
Johnson & Wales University’s all-time leading rebounder in
the Wildcats impressive 75-56 victory against Rivier in a Great Northeast
Athletic Contest at the Harborside RAC on Tuesday evening.
Anderson grabbed his eighth rebound of the game with 5:44 left in the
second half, giving him 580 for his four-year career, eclipsing the
mark of 579 set by Anthony Williams from 1995-1999. Anderson finished
the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and adding 12 rebounds
while fellow senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) added a game-high
22 points and added five rebounds, four assists and two steals in the
victory. Brian Stice led the way for Rivier with a double-double on
12 points and 11 rebounds while Bryan Sutton scored 16 points and added
five rebounds in the setback for the Raiders.
Rivier jumped out to the early lead and held a 10-point advantage, 31-21
after a layup from Sutton with 2:58 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales
would respond, however with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 31-29 after
a three-pointer from Rusell with just :39 left on the clock. River took
the 33-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Johnson & Wales used a 7-2 run to recapture
the lead, 36-35 on a layup from Anderson with 17:51 left in the contest.
The Wildcats continued to build on their advantage and took their first
double-digit lead of the evening on a layup from sophomore Conor Moran
(Rio De Janiero, Brazil) with 8:14 left in the contest. The Wildcats
then cruised to the 75-56 victory.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
volleyball squad posted a 3-0 shutout victory against Mount Ida in a
North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association/New England Division
contest at the Harborside RAC on Monday evening. The Wildcats swept the
match, taking the game 30-22, 32-34 and 33-31. In both the second and
third games, Johnson & Wales trailed late in the game before rallying
for the win.
Leading the way for Johnson & Wales in the victory was sophomore
Daniel Woodside (Norristown, Pa.) who registered a double-double with
17 kills and 13 digs while three other Wildcats were in double-figures
in kills, including sophomore James Collins (East Hartford, Conn.) and
sophomore David Santos (East Hartford, Conn.) with 15 and 12 respectively.
Junior Arthur Phaire (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands) rounded out the
Wildcats with double-figures in kills with 10 while senior Carlos Velez
(San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied a season-high 49 set assists in the win.
Sophomore Lucas Coffeen (Newton, Mass.) led the way for Mount Ida with

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
basketball team traveled to Albertus Magnus and knocked off the Falcons,
72-59 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Wildcats third-straight victory and fifth in their last six
contests.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with 21 points and three rebounds while fellow senior Chris Anderson
(Wentzville, Mo.) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and
11 rebounds in the victory for the Wildcats. Junior Wascar Viscaino (Providence,
R.I.) added 10 points with eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals
in only 20 minutes of action while sophomore Brian Fernandes (Fall River,
Mass.) added 10 points for JWU.
Albertus Magnus had three players in double-figures, including Tim Russell
who tallied a game-high 23 points while Curtis Miller added 11 and Chris
Keslow 10 points in the setback for the Falcons. The Wildcats held a

Sophomore Melissa Fidalgo (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored a team-high 14
points and added four rebounds and three assists for Johnson & Wales
while Meredith Sullivan (Lanesborough, Mass.) added 10 rebounds and five
boards for the Wildcats in the setback. JWU placed four players in double-figures,
including freshman Alex Ventura (Dorchester, Mass.) with 11 and Denise

with scores of 30-19, 30-23 and 30-23.

four digs while fellow sophomore Darlington Abanulo added 11 set assists,
five digs and two service aces in the setback for the Blazers. Elms College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University ice hockey team
dropped a 12-1 decision against Lebanon Valley in an ECAC Northeast contest
at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North Smithfield, R.I., on Friday
evening.
Lebanon Valley got on the board early when Jeffrey Smith put in a pass
from Alex Beatrice and Cameron Vandeveer to give the Flying Dutchmen
a 1-0 lead just 1:02 into the game. The Flying Dutchmen added to their
lead when Mike Kuzmuk put in a pass from Jason Slusher, giving the squad
a 2-0 advantage at the 12:53 mark. LVC would take the 2-0 lead into the
locker room at the first intermission.
In the second period, Lebanon Valley increased their lead to 3-0 just
:59 in on a goal from Brendon Herr and extended their advantage to 4-0
on a power play tally from Doug MacCormack just 1:28 into the second
period. The Wildcats would respond, however when Brian Kilbride registered
his first goal of the season, an unassisted tally at the 14:46 mark.
Lebanon Valley would close out the scoring for the period with MacCormack’s
second goal of the evening, making the score 5-1 after two.
The Flying Dutchmen scored a pair of power play goals, first from Scott
Eberenz at 6:39 followed by Anthony Lattanze at 7:05. Lebanon Valley
scored four more goals before MacCormack capped off the scoring for the
evening with his third goal of the game, a hat-trick at the 19:34 mark.
Nick Lacroix made 48 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales while
Joe Burley had 11 stops for the Flying Dutchmen. With the loss Johnson & Wales
falls to 1-16-1 while Lebanon Valley improves to 9-7 for the year. The
Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 29th when they travel

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling
squad posted an impressive 32-18 victory against Western New England
College at the Harborside Recreation and Athletics Center on Wednesday
evening. The Wildcats took seven of the 10 matches, including two by
forefit.
The matchup started with the heavyweight contest where Johnson & Wales
sophomore Guitler Raphael (Malden, Mass.) posted an 11-7 victory over
freshman John Goepfrich (Holmes, N.Y.). The visiting Golden Bears evened
the score when freshman Jason Vermes (Broad Brook, Conn.) pinned JWU
sophomore Ryan Strobel (Woodcliffe Lake, N.J.) at the 6:26 mark, giving
Western New England a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats regained the advantage,
however after accepting forfeits in the 133 and 141 pound matches, giving
the team a 15-6 lead after four matches. When action resumed at the 149
pound match, Johnson & Wales sophomore Chris Wells (Lake Hiawatha,
N.J.) posted an impressive 20-2 technical fall victory in 4:30, giving
the Wildcats a 20-6 lead. The Wildcats made it two straight when freshman
Joe Boucher (Salem, N.H.) posted a 14-9 win against freshman Bryan Howard
(Oakdale, Conn.). The two teams would split the final four matches, including
a pair of pins by Western New England by freshman Steve Cappello (Oyster
Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Brian Myers (Glen Cove, N.Y.). It would not be
enough, however as Johnson & Wales held on for the 32-18 victory.
The win was the fourth-straight for Johnson & Wales who improve
to 8-3 for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday,
January 25th when they travel to Bridgewater State for the NECCWA Duals,
starting at 11:00 a.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales ice hockey squad dropped
an 11-4 decision against intra-state rival Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast
contest on Saturday evening at the Rhode Island Sports Center.
Salve Regina got on the board first when junior Geno Binda (South Boston,
Mass.) scored a power play goal 4:57 into the game. The Seahawks made
the score 2-0 on a tally from sophomore Marc Copeland (Climax, Mich.)
at the 6:46 mark. The Wildcats would respond, however when junior Will
Meyer (Enfield, N.H.) put in a pass from freshman Colin Brophy (Medford,
N.J.) and senior Alan Rigatti (Staten Island, N.Y.) 9:43 into the game.
The Seahawks then scored three unanswered, including a power play goal
from freshman Charlie Speight (Cold Springs, N.Y.) with what would later
prove to be the game winner 14:58 into the first period. The Wildcats
capped the scoring in the first period with freshman Justin Timpano’s
(Glastonbury, Conn.) first of two goals on the evening at the 16:14 mark.
Salve Regina took the 5-2 lead heading into the locker room after the
first period.
It was all Johnson & Wales in the second period as junior Eric
Robertson (Anchorage, Alaska) put in a tally just :56 into the period.
Timpano’s second goal of the evening from senior Matt O’Connor
(Plaistow, N.H.) cut the deficit to just one goal, making the score 5-4
13:06 into the second period. The Seahawks added their sixth goal of
the game, a power play tally from junior Adam Asselin (Auburn, Maine)
at the 13:35 mark.
The visiting Seahawks used five third period goals to take the 11-4
victory. Junior Nick Lacroix made 36 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales
while junior Matt Porter (Willbrahim, Mass) had 21 stops in the victory
for Salve Regina.
Johnson & Wales falls to 1-15-1 for the season, 1-6-1 in the ECAC
Northeast while Salve Regina improves to 4-5-1, 2-1-1 in league play.
The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, January 23rd when they

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s
basketball team posted an impressive 73-53 decision against Western New
England in a Great Northeast Athletic conference contest on the road
on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for the Wildcats
with a game-high 23 points and while junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles,
Calif.) was also in double-figures with 14 points and six assists in
the win for JWU. Leading the way for Western New England was Anthony
Charbatji with 14 points and four rebounds while Jon Godbout added eight
points and four assists in the win.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead 18-4 lead midway through
the first half and held a 28-19 advantage heading into halftime, despite
shooting just 28% from the field. In the second half, the Wildcats found
their shooting touch and shot 50% from the field en route to the 73-53
victory. The Wildcats also forced the Golden Bears in 21 turnovers in
the contest.
JWU senior Chris Anderson (Wentzville, Mo.) narrowly missed a double-double
with eight points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats while Wascar Viscaino
(Providence, R.I.) added nine points and six rebounds off the bench in
the win.
Johnson & Wales improves to 7-5 and 4-1 in the GNAC while Western
New England falls to 4-8 on the season, 2-3 in league play. The Wildcats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women’s
basketball team fell 76-35 against Western New England in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic
Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Socorro Cronan (Providence, R.I.) led the way for the Wildcats
with 13 points and seven rebounds while junior Karen Thureson (New Britain,
Conn.) added six points in the setback. Sophomore Lisa Masella (Newtown,
Conn.) tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for Western
New England while senior Emily Sward (Plainville, Conn.) added nine points
and 11 boards for the Golden Bears.
Western New England jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and took a their
first double figure lead with a three-pointer from freshman Laura Booth
(Chicopee, Mass.), making the score 13-3 four minutes into the game.
The Golden Bears led by as many as 28 points on a layup from Masella
with 4:50 left in the half and took a 42-15 lead into the locker room
at halftime.
The Golden Bears extended their lead in the second half and used a 21-5
run to take a 62-23 lead after a jumper from sophomore Jessica Harrica
(Morrisonville, N.Y.) with 8:33 left in the game. WNEC then cruised to
the 76-35 victory.
JWU freshman Alex Ventura (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed six rebounds off
the bench while freshman Kerri Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied 10
points in seven minutes off the bench for Western New England.

2004 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s
basketball squad posted a 76-68 victory against Emerson in a Great Northeast
Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation and Athletics
Center on Thursday evening.
Senior Rohan Russell scored a game-high 28 points and added five rebounds
and four steals while junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles, Calif.) added
16 points and five assists in the victory. Leading the way for Emerson
in the setback was sophomore Steve Georgoulis (New York, N.Y.) who posted
a double-double with a team-high 24 points and 14 rebounds while junior
Graham Stephen (Bedford, Mass.) also tallied a double-double with 13
points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the setback.
Emerson jumped out early and held a six point lead on a layup from Georgoulis,
making the score 15-9 with 13:55 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales
responded however and took their its first lead of the game on a layup
from sophomore Victor Purnell (Los Angeles, Calif.) with 8:22 left in
the half. The two teams then traded leads back and forth through the
remainder of the first half with the score knotted 40-40 heading into
the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams battled evenly early on before Johnson & Wales
used an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from senior Chris Anderson
(Wentzville, Mo.) to take the 62-52 lead with 6:02 left in the game.
Emerson chipped away at the advantage and trailed by just three, 68-65
after a three-pointer from senior Robert Hennigan (Worcester, Mass.)
with 1:32 left in the game. That would be as close as the Lions would
get however as the Wildcats hit six of eight free throws down the stretch
to take the 76-68 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 6-5 with a 3-1 record in
conference play while Emerson falls to 3-5, 1-2 in the GNAC. The Wildcats
will return to action on Saturday, January 17th when they travel to Western
New England for a GNAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
women’s basketball falls To coast guard, 66-49 January
15, 2004 NEW LONDON, CONN.— The Johnson & Wales University
women’s basketball team dropped a tough 66-49 decision on the road
against the United States Coast Guard Academy in a non-league matchup
on Thursday evening.
Coast guard senior Lis Bosma had a career-high 25 points to go with
10 rebounds and junior Kira Peterson became Coast Guard's all-time assists
leader in the victory. Senior Socorro Cronan led Johnson & Wales
(1-10) with 12 points while Nicole Milton added 11 points in the setback
for the Wildcats.
Coast Guard used an 18-7 run over the final 6:37 of the first half to
break an 18-18 tie and lead 36-25 at halftime. Amy Harmel added 14 points
while Holly Bucheit had 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for Coast
Guard.
Johnson & Wales falls to 1-10 for the Year while Coast Guard improves
to 4-7 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday,
January 17th when they host Western New England in a Great Northeast

R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling squad posted
an impressive 30-12 victory against intra-state rival Roger Williams
in a Pilgrim League matchup at the Harborside Recreation and Athletics
Center on Wednesday evening. The Wildcats took seven of the 10 matches,
including two by pin fall.
In the 125 pound match, Roger Williams junior Jon Egan (West Kingstown,
R.I.) defeated Johnson & Wales sophomore Ryan Strobel (Woodcliffe,
N.J.), giving the visiting Hawks an early 3-0 lead. The Wildcats bounced
back, however with a 6-2 win by sophomore Vinny Lauria (Nashua, N.H.),
evening the match at 3-3. The Wildcats extended their lead when sophomore
Anthony Montes (Nutley, N.J.) notched an impressive 24-9 technical fall
win over Dallas Fill (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) at the 141 pound match,
giving the Wildcats an 8-3 advantage. A pin from JWU sophomore Chris
Wells (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) at the 4:55 mark of the 149 pound match gave
the Wildcats a 14-3 lead before the Hawks responded with an 8-3 victory
by senior Camilo Gaviria (Ludlow, Mass.), cutting the lead to 14-6. A
pair of JWU wins, including a pin by junior captain Tim Ruberg (Harrison,
Ohio) in the 174 match gave the Wildcats a 23-6 lead.
The visiting Hawks took the 184 pound patch when senior Joe Fitzsimmons
(Salem, N.H.) pinned freshman Anthony D’Amico (Plantations, Fla.)
1:33 into the match. The Wildcats responded with a 10-1 major decision
victory by junior captain Ryan Lenhardt (Glouchester, Va.) in the 197
pound match. In the final match of the evening, JWU’s Guitler Raphael
defeated RWU junior Rob Blinn (Pelham, N.H.) by a score of 5-4.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 5-3 with a perfect 2-0
record in the Pilgrim League while Roger Williams falls to 5-4, 2-2 in
league action. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January
17th when they travel to Williams for a tri-match with MIT at Noon.

2004 PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s
basketball team dropped a hard fought 70-65 decision against Norwich
University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday
afternoon at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic Center in Providence,
R.I.
Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) led the way for Johnson & Wales
with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds while senior Chris (Wentzville,
Mo.) and junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles, Calif.) each had 13 points
in the setback. Junior Marc Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way for
Norwich with 16 points and five boards while junior Tim Shedd (Hardwick,
Vt.) scored seven points, including a three-pointer in the game’s
final seconds, and added eight rebounds off the bench in just 15 minutes
of action.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and had a 12-6 advantage
after a three-pointer from junior Daisuke Yoshimotto (Osaka, Japan) at
the 14:56 mark. The Wildcats continued to build their advantage and took
their first double-digit lead of the game on a jumper from Russell, making
the score 30-19 with 2:47 left in the half. JWU would take the 35-22
lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same early on in the second half with the Wildcats
building their lead to as many as 17 points after a jumper from Tamargo
gave them a 43-26 advantage with 17:40 left in the game. Norwich responded,
however and cut the lead to just 10 points on a pair of free throws from
sophomore Geoff Hensley (Cincinnati, Ohio) with 11:36 left in the game.
The Cadets continued to chip away at the lead and regained the lead on
a three-pointer from senior Andy Miller (Fort Collins, Colo.), giving
them a 60-59 advantage with 4:02 left in the contest. The two teams then
traded baskets before a three pointer from JWU’s Anderson tied
the game at 65-65 with 1:06 left on the clock. Shedd’s three-pointer
gave Norwich the lead back and Tamargo and Russell both missed three’s
in the final 20 seconds while Norwich hit a pair of free throws to seal
the 70-65 win.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 4-5, 1-1 in the GNAC while
Norwich improves to 5-4 for the year, 1-1 in conference play. The Wildcats

team dropped an 8-3 decision against Geneseo in a non-conference contest
at the Rhode Island Sports Center in North Smithfield, R.I., on Saturday

The Wildcats got on the board first when freshman Scott DiRico (Limerick,
Pa.) took a pass from junior Larry Bryan (Scohomish, Wash.) off a face-off
to give Johnson & Wales a 1-0 lead just 1:14 into the game. Geneseo
responded quickly, however with a power play goal from sophomore Kris
Heeres with assists to freshman Matt Stevens and sophomore Nick Onody
at the 2:32 mark. The Knights would toke the lead when senior Jon Campbell
put in a pass from sophomore Mark Schwamberger to take the 2-1 lead at
the 6:42 mark. The visiting knights took the one-goal lead into the first
intermission.
Geneseo added to their lead just :55 seconds into the second period
on another power play goal from senior Paul Weisman, taking the 3-1 advantage.
The Knights struck again quickly when freshman Mitch Stevens scored his
first of two goals on the evening 1:41 into the period. Geneseo’s
lead grew to 4-1 on a goal from freshman Brett Bestwick with assists
from senior Andy Ford and sophomore Nick Onody at the 8:31 mark, taking
a 5-1 advantage at the 8:31 mark. The visiting Knights had the four-goal
lead heading into the final period of play.
In the third period, the Wildcats got on the board first when freshman
Zach Cobb put in a pass from fellow freshman Andrew Vroom, cutting the
lead to 5-2 with 15:51 left in the game. After Geneseo went ahead 6-2
on Stephen’s second goal, JWU responded with a power play goal
from junior William Meyer to make the score 6-3 with 7:08 left in the
game. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Geneso
scored two goals in the final two minutes to take the 8-3 victory.

Brockport got on the board first when senior Michael Cameron (Massena,
N.Y.) put in a pass from junior Brian Bauman (Matawan, N.J.) and junior
Joey Connolly (Buffalo, N.Y.) to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at
the 9:15 mark of the first period. Brockport took the 1-0 lead into the
locker room after the first period. Johnson & Wales evened the score
at 1-1 when freshman Colin Brophy (Medford, N.J.) put in his first collegiate
goal on an assist from fellow freshman Brett Mitchell (Westfield, Mass.)
just 2:24 into the second period. Brockport responded, however and junior
Brian Sargent (Wellsville, N.Y.) put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 at the
5:56 mark. Brockport’s Paul Stasko (Batavia, N.Y.) scored what
would prove to be the game-winning goal with 9:12 left on the clock in
the second period on an assist from junior Brent Weist (Harrisburg, Pa.).
Joey Connolly, who had one goal and three assists on the evening, scored
