JWU Baseball Falls To No. 12 Wheaton, 11-2

Norton, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision against No. 12 Wheaton on the road at Sidell Stadium on Saturday afternoon

 
Johnson & Wales scored first, taking advantage of a Wheaton miscue during the opening frame, as a two-out strikeout-wild pitch was followed by senior Mike MacKay's (Pawtucket, R.I.) RBI single. In the bottom half, the Lyons knotted the score on junior Robert Foote's (Walpole, Mass.) single to left.

Wheaton went ahead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Foote and sophomore Sean Buckley (Webster, Mass.) grounding out to plate another run, making it 3-1. In the fourth, senior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, Maine) singled home Wheaton's fourth run with two down before stealing second and scoring on freshman Sean Munley's (Trenton, N.J.) base hit to left center.

 
In the top of the fifth, senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) tallied an RBI single, cutting the lead to 5-2.  That was as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Wheaton scored six in the bottom of the fifth en route to the 11-2 victory.

 
The Lyons finished with 14 hits, including 13 during the first five innings. Foote went 4-for-4 with three RBI, tying his season highs in hits and runs batted in.  Five different Wildcats had one hit apiece, with Jackson going 1-for-3 with one run and an RBI.

With the win Wheaton improves to 32-8 while Johnson & Wales wraps up the 2008 campaign with a 24-18 record.

JWU Baseball Drops 16-11 Decision To UMass Dartmouth
May 1, 2008

East Providence, R.I.– The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped a 16-11 decision against UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.

UMass Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead after a five run second inning gave the Corsairs the 7-0 advantage.  The inning was highlighted by an RBI double by sophomore Jeff Machi (Franklin, Mass.).  Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the third on back-to-back RBI singles by seniors Mike Wengzn (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.).  The Wildcats would cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth on a two run double by junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.).  UMass Dartmouth add three runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh, including a two run single by Macchi to take the 14-6 lead.  The Corsairs led 16-7 heading into the bottom of the night before JWU rallied.   Senior Chad Miller (Pelham, N.H.) had a bases clearing single to make the score 16-10 and Wengzn’s RBI single cut the lead to 16-11.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as UMass Dartmouth took the 16-11 victory.

Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) was 3-for-5 with four runs scored for Johnson & Wales while Rapuano was 3-for-3 with a run and three RBI in the setback for the Wildcats.  Wengzn and Jackson each had three hits for JWU.  UMass Dartmouth was led by freshman Eric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) who went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Macchi was 2-for-4 with a run and five RBI in the win for the Corsairs.

Freshman Shane Campbell (Marlboro, Mass.) picked up the win for UMass Dartmouth, allowing six runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work.

With the loss, Johnson & Wales falls to 24-17 while UMass Dartmouth improves to 4-31 on the year.  The Wildcats will wrap up the 2008 campaign on Saturday, May 3rd when they travel to Wheaton for a non-conference contest starting at 12:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Drops 12-7 Decision Against Suffolk In GNAC Tournament
April 26, 2008

Nashua, N.H. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball was eliminated form the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship with a 12-7 setback against Suffolk at Holman Stadium on Saturday evening.

Suffolk got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second, including an RBI single by sophomore Mike Kenneally (Georgetown, Mass.) to take the 2-0 lead.  Johnson & Wales tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two run by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.), making the score 2-2.  The visiting Rams regained the lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) and an RBI single by senior Greg DiMarco (Newton, Mass.), taking the 4-2 advantage.  Suffolk added three runs in the top of the fourth, including a two run single by Barrett for the 7-2 lead.

Johnson & Wales cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth when back-to-back RBI singles by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) and junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.), made the score 7-4.  The Wildcats continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Rapuano’s two-run double cut the lead to 7-6.  Suffolk responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, including DiMarco’s two-run double to put the Rams up 10-6.  After JWU made the score 10-7 on an RBI single by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.), Suffolk responded with a solo home run by sophomore Rory Gentile (Glouster, Mass.) to take the 11-7 lead.   The Rams added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by sophomore Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) en route to the 12-7 victory.

Corcoran was 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI for Suffolk while Barrett was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI in the win for the Rams.  Melendez was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI while Rapuano was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Junior Reid Jackson (Burlington, Mass.) pitched the complete game victory for Suffolk, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.  

The Wildcats are now 24-16 while Suffolk improves to 25-9.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, May 1st when they host UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.  Suffolk advances to the GNAC Championship game against St. Joseph’s of Maine, starting at 1:00 p.m

JWU Baseball Falls To St. Joseph’s of Maine, 6-4

Nashua, N.H. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision against Saint Joseph’s of Maine in a the winner’s bracket game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at Holman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to a 1-0 in when junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) scored on an RBI single by junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.).  St. Joseph’s responded in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by senior Andrew Wood (South Portland, Maine).  Senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave the Wildcats the 2-1 lead in the top of the third, scoring junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) with an RBI single.  The Monks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on an unearned run, scoring freshman Ian Lee (Hanpden, Maine) to make the score 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, St. Joseph’s scored three, including an RBI single by freshman Eric Labatte (Rochester, N.H.), taking the 5-2 advantage.  Rapuano’s sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth scored Melendez to cut the lead to 5-3.  The Monk’s added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by junior Wade Oliver (Owls Head, Maine), making the score 6-3.  In the top of the night, JWU rallied when senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) hit a solo home run, cutting the lead to 6-4.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as SJC held on for the 6-4 victory.

Rapuano was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI in the setback for Johnson & Wales while senior Luke Enman (Milan, N.H.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the win for the Monks.  Freshman Mason Roberge (Franklin, N.H.) picked up the win for St. Joseph’s College, allowing three runs on eight hits in five and two third innings of work.

The Wildcats are now 24-15 while Saint Joseph’s improves to 24-13.  JWU will now take on Suffolk in an elimination game of the GNAC Championship.  First pitch will be approximately 5:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Standouts Earn All-GNAC Accolades

Providence, R.I. – Four Johnson & Wales University baseball players were named All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selections, the conference office announced this morning.  Senior shortstop Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) and junior outfielder Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) were named to the All-GNAC first team.  Senior pitcher Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) and junior pitcher/third baseman Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) earned second team accolades.

Jackson is making his second consecutive appearance as an All-GNAC player.  This year, he leads the GNAC with a .390 batting average while his .645 slugging percentage also ranks him first in the league.  He ranks in the top five in every offensive category and is first in hits (55), first in doubles (18), first in total bases (91), tied for first in home runs (6), second in runs scored (40) and fourth in RBI (33).  During the year, he struck out just 11 times in 154 plate appearances and had 18 multi-hit games for the Wildcats.  His 18 doubles established a new single-season school record and he will leave JWU among the top five in every significant hitting category.

The national Division III leader in stolen bases, Newsome’s 41 swipes set a new JWU single season school record.  He also led the team and the conference with 42 runs scored and was second in on-base percentage (.467).  He hit .350 for the year, including a .526 average in conference play and added 13 RBI for the Wildcats.  He also played flawlessly in the outfield, not committing an error the entire season.

Hufnagel is also making his second straight appearance as an all-conference performer.  The three-time GNAC pitcher of the week led the GNAC with seven wins and was first in innings pitched with 62.1.  His 81 strikeouts rank him second in the conference and while his 3.61 ERA is the fourth lowest in the league.  He had a better than 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 81 strikeouts and only 36 walks.

Melendez, an All-GNAC honoree in 2006, was one of the top offensive players and one of the top pitchers in the conference.  He was fifth in the GNAC with 35 RBI while his 12 doubles ranked him third in the league.  Melendez is hitting .287 with 29 runs with 35 RBI.  Also one of the top pitchers in the conference, he is second in the GNAC in wins with five and also started the second most games in the league, making eight starts on the year.  He has recorded 26 strikeouts in his eight appearances while posting a 3.60 ERA

Johnson & Wales is 24-14 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, April 26th when they travel to Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H., for the GNAC Final Four.  The Wildcats will take on St. Joseph’s College of Maine in the tournament’s winners’ bracket final at 1:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Defeats Rivier, 11-2 In GNAC Final Four

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team posted an 11-2 victory against Rivier in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Final Four at Pierce Field on Thursday evening

Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the second when junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J.).  The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 when senior Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored on an RBI single by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.).  Rivier responded in the top of the third when senior John McMahon (Somerville, Mass.) led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the third, JWU went ahead 3-1 on an RBI single by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.), scoring fellow senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.).  Ziman later scored on a single by MacKay, putting the Wildcats up 4-1.

JWU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth when Nadjavestky’s three run homer gave the squad the 7-1 advantage.  Rivier cut the lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Ryan O’Connor (Medford, Mass.), but that would be as close as the Raiders would get.  Ziman’s three run home run in the bottom of the eighth was part of a four run inning that led to the 11-2 victory for Johnson & Wales.

Ziman was 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI while MacKay was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win for the Wildcats.  O’Connor was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss for Rivier.  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing two runs on seven hits with 16 strikeouts in eight innings of work.

With the win, Johnson & Wales improves to 24-14 while Rivier falls to 16-14.  Booth teams will now head to Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H., for the remainder of the GNAC Championship.  The Wildcats will take on St. Joseph’s of Maine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while Rivier will face Suffolk in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m.

JWU Baseball Set To Face Rivier In GNAC Final Four

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team will host Rivier in the Final Four of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m. at Pierce Field in East Providence, R.I.

Johnson & Wales is the No. 2 seed for the tournament after posting a 23-14 overall record, 11-3 in the GNAC.  Rivier is the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a 16-13 overall mark, 8-6 in league play.  The two teams split a double header on April 6th with Rivier taking a 5-4 win in the opener before the Wildcats rallied for a 16-1 win in the nightcap.
 
JWU is led by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) who hit .401 with 39 runs and 33 RBI.  Fellow senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) is batting .359 with 28 runs and a team best 41 RBI while junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) is hitting .358 and leads the team in runs scored (42) and stolen bases (40).  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) is 6-0 with a 3.75 ERA on the mound.  Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) is 5-2 on the mound with a team best 3.60 ERA and he has also been solid at the plate, hitting .295 with 28 runs and 35 RBI.

The Wildcats will head to Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H., on Saturday, April 26th and Sunday, April 27th for the remainder of the GNAC Championship.

JWU Baseball Drops Pair Against Suffolk In GNAC Twin Bill

Quincy, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team dropped both games of a Great Northeast Athletic double header against Suffolk at Adams Field on Saturday afternoon.  The first game was an extra-innings affair with Suffolk taking a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.  The host Rams finished the sweep with an 11-2 win in the nightcap.

Suffolk took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opener on a sacrifice fly by junior Keith Carter (Newburyport, Mass.).  Johnson & Wales responded in the top of the second on an RBI single by junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.) and grabbed a 2-1 edge in the fifth on a run-scoring single by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.).  That score held up until the bottom of the seventh when Suffolk forced extra frames on senior Nick Martinho’s (Middleton, Mass.) game-tying RBI single with two outs, and the two teams traded runs in the eighth, with senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) giving Johnson & Wales a 3-2 advantage with a run-scoring single before junior Paul Vittozzi (North Reading, Mass.) plated sophomore Bobby Barrett (Milton, Mass.) with the tying run in the bottom of the inning.  After JWU was held scoreless in the top of the 10th, Barrett led off the bottom of the frame with a single, advanced to second on an error, to third on a single by junior Anthony Iacopucci (Medford, Mass.) before scoring the game-winner on an error.  Martinho, Vittozzi and sophomore Tim Corcoran (Beverly, Mass.) each had out a pair of hits in the opening game win for Suffolk, as senior Greg DiMarco (Newton, Mass.) picked up his second win in relief of fellow senior Steve Durant (Malden, Mass.), who scattered four hits and fanned seven over the first 8 1/3 innings of play.  Rapuano collected two hits in the first contest for Johnson & Wales, as senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) allowed nine hits and struck out 15 over nine-plus innings.

The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead in the nightcap when sophomore Rory Gentile (Gloucester, Mass.) hit his second homer to lead off the bottom of the first.  Suffolk extended its advantage to 8-0 in the third with a five-run rally, highlighted by Vittozzi’s two-run single and Martinho’s two-run homer, his eighth of the season.  The two squads traded two-run rallies in the fourth before Barrett closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, as he was one of seven Rams to notch two hits in the victory.  Senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss for the Wildcats.

Johnson & Wales is now 23-14 for the season, 11-3 in the GNAC while Suffolk improves to 23-8 for the season, 14-0 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Thursday, April 24th when they host a semifinal game of the GNAC Championship.

JWU’s John LaRose Notches 200th Win In Baseball’s 20-10 Victory Over Salve Regina

Newport, R.I.– Head coach John LaRose notched his 200th win in a John & Wales uniform as he guided the Wildcats to a 20-10 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference game on the road on Friday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales scored five runs in the top of the first inning, including a two-run single by junior Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J).  Salve Regina responded in the bottom of the first, as freshman Brandon Bursie (Smithfield, R.I.) hit a grand slam, cutting the Wildcats lead to 5-4.

That was as close as the Seahawks got, as Johnson & Wales scored four times in the second, twice in the third, three times in the fourth and five more runs in the fifth en route to the 20-10 victory.

Nadjavestky led the Wildcat offense with four hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored.   Senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) added three hits and three runs scored, while senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) had four RBI in the victory for the Wildcats.  Bursie led the Seahawks with the grand slam, a single and two runs scored in the setback.

Junior Bobby Gilbert (Florham Park, N.J.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing five earned runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 23-12 while Salve Regina falls to 18-14-1.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 19th when they travel to Adams Field in Quincy, Mass., for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header against Suffolk, starting at 1:00 p.m.

East Providence, R.I.– The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped an 18-5 decision against Brandeis in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the first when junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.).  Brandeis responded in the top of the second when a solo home run by sophomore John O’Brion (Portland, Maine) knotted the game at 1-1.  In the bottom of the second, the Wildcats regained the lead on an RBI groundout by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.), scoring junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) to put the team up 2-1.  Brandeis knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third on an RBI double by sophomore Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine).  The Judges then capitalized on a JWU miscue for the 3-2 advantage and went ahead 4-2 on an RBI single by freshman Pat Nicholson (East Walpole, Mass.) in the third inning.  Brandeis broke the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits to take the 7-2 lead and added seven more in the top of the sixth en route to the 18-5 victory.

Nicholson was 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI while freshman Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.) was 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBI in the win for Brandeis.  Ziman was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, including a solo home run, in the setback for the Wildcats.

Senior Tyler Robinson (Manotik, Ontario) picked up the win for Brandeis, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six and two third innings of work.

JWU Baseball Downs UMass Dartmouth, 5-4

North Dartmouth, Mass..– The Johnson & Wales baseball team notched a 5-4 win against UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference contest on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats took an early lead, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) drove in a run with an infield grounder, and junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) hit a two-run homer.   The Corsairs got on the board in the bottom of the second when freshman Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but JWU came back with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by senior shortstop Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.), taking the 5-1 advantage.

JWU senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Tom LaDore went 2-for-4 win the loss for UMass Dartmouth.  Sophomore (Bristol, R.I.) pitched the first 6 2/3 innings for the Wildcats and earned the win, improving to 2-2.  Junior Rob Gleavy (Braintree, Mass.) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth.

With the win, Johnson & Wales improves to 22-11 while UMass Dartmouth falls to 3-21 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, April 17th when they host Brandeis in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Falls To Rhode Island College, 13-3

Providence, R.I.– The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped a 13-3 decision against Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

Rhode Island College jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by junior Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, R.I.).  The Anchormen added three runs in the second, highlighted by senior Pete Olson’s (North Providence, RI) and junior Josh Cardoso's (Dartmouth, Mass.) RBI singles.    

The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth as junior third baseman Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) belted a leadoff homer, making the score 4-1. Junior Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, R.I) hit a three-run home run in the fifth to put RIC 7-1.  The Anchormen added two runs in each of the final three innings to take the 13-3 victory.

Melendez fell a triple shy of the cycle with a 3-for-4 showing, which included a double, a home run, one run scored and one RBI.  Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 in the setback for Johnson & Wales.  Costa was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI in the win for Rhode Island College.

Freshman Rob Rushton (Freetown, Mass.) notched the win for RIC, pitching three innings of relief for the Anchormen.  
     
With the loss, Johnson & Wales falls to 21-11 while Rhode Island College improves to 20-7 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, April 16th when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Takes Two Against Daniel Webster

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team posted a pair of victories against Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales recorded a 10-0 victory in the opener and finished the sweep with a 19-3 win in the nightcap.  There were several records set on the day for JWU as junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) set a single season record with his 35th  stolen base of the year while senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) hit his 18th double of the season, also a school single season record.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on RBI singles by seniors Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.).  The Wildcats added four more in the bottom of the second, including an RBI double by Jackson.  The squad capped off the scoring for the afternoon with three runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to the 10-0 victory.  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) picked up the win for JWU, pitching five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts for his sixth win of the year.  Jackson was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Ziman was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the victory for the Wildcats.  Sophomore Charles Manning (Riverside, R.I.) was 2-for-3 in the loss for Daniel Webster.

In the nightcap, JWU took an early 8-0 lead after the first three innings.  Daniel Webster responded in the top of the fourth when they tallied three runs, including a solo home run by freshman Trevor Duggleby (Nashua, N.H.) to cut the lead to 8-3.  The Wildcats broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included a grand slam home run by Jackson, giving the team the 15-3 lead.  JWU then cruised to the 19-3 victory.  Jackson was 3-for-4 with a run and five RBI while Newsome was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.  Sophomore Joe Welsh (Litchfield, N.H.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the setback for Daniel Webster.  Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) notched the victory on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

The Wildcats are now 21-10 for the season, 11-1 in the GNAC while Daniel Webster falls to 4-19 for the season, 2-10 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Tuesday, April 15th when they travel to Rhode Island College for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Sweeps Emerson In GNAC Double Header

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team swept Emerson in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales posted a 10-7 victory in the opener and finished the sweep with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Johnson & Wales capitalized on an Emerson error in the first to score an unearned run for the 1-0 lead.  Emerson tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single by freshman Brian Kitson (Nashua, N.H.).  JWU responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, including an RBI triple by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) and an RBI double by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.), putting the Wildcats ahead 5-1.  Emerson rallied in the top of the fourth when an RBI single by senior Brian Fennessey (East Greenwich, R.I.) made the score 5-3.  JWU added four in the bottom of the sixth, including a two run single by junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.), taking the 9-3 lead.  Once again, Emerson responded in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead to 9-7 after four runs on six hits.  The Wildcats added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 10-7 advantage on an RBI double by freshman Teddy Katz (Pittsburgh, Pa.).  In the top of the seventh, senior Josh Hodge (Sherburne, N.Y.) struck out the side to give JWU the 10-7 win.  Sophomore Jeff Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.) picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing three runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.  Fennessey was 2-for-2 with two RBI while Kitson was 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI in the setback for Emerson.  Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the victory for JWU.

In the nightcap, JWU took the 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by junior Rich Fonseca (Riverside, R.I.).  Emerson grabbed the lead in the top of the third on a two run single by senior Kent Anderson (Kensington, Md.), putting the Lions ahead 2-1.  In the bottom of the fourth, JWU tied the game on a sacrifice fly Fonseca and regained the 3-2 advantage on an RBI single by Newsome.  An RBI double by junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.) in the bottom of the fifth gave JWU the 4-2 lead.  Once again, Emerson rallied and tied the game 4-4 on a two run single by sophomore Jim Fuoco (Patchogue, N.Y.) in the top of the sixth.  Manley’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth gave JWU the 5-4 lead and Hodge retired the side in the top of the seventh to give the Wildcats the 5-4 victory.  Rapuano was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Newsome was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win for JWU.  Kitson was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the loss for Emerson.

The Wildcats are now 19-10 for the season, 9-1 in the GNAC while Emerson falls to 5-16 for the season, 1-9 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Sunday, April 13th when they host Daniel Webster in a GNAC double header, starting at 12:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Knocks Off Framingham State, 10-1

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team posted a 10-1 victory against Framingham State in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead when junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) to put the team ahead 1-0 in the first.  Framingham responded in the top of the third on an RBI single by freshman Mike Damon (Chelmsford, Mass.), knotting the game at 1-1.  In the bottom of third, JWU capitalized on a Framingham error, scoring a pair of unearned runs after back-to-back bases loaded walks, putting the team ahead 3-1.  The Wildcats added one run in fourth and another in the fifth before Manley’s two run single in the sixth put the team up 7-1.  JWU tallied three unearned runs, including an RBI double by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.), in the eighth en route to the 10-1 victory.  Newsome scored four runs in the victory for the Wildcats while Damon was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss for Framingham State.

Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) picked up his fifth win of the season for JWU, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 17-10 on the year while Framingham State falls to 3-12.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 12th when they host Emerson in a GNAC double header, starting at 12:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Falls To Roger Williams, 9-6

Bristol, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision against Roger Williams on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats struck early, as junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) got the first run of the day on an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the first inning.  Roger Williams responded in the bottom half of the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits by Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) to take the 2-1 lead.

Roger Williams’ Jamie Dahill (S. Boston, Mass.) helped stretch the Hawk lead to four in the following inning, clearing the bases with a three-run double to center field.  Johnson & Wales rallied in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Melendez, while Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) doubled in Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) to cut the gap to 5-3 after three innings of play.

The Wildcats pulled closer in the fourth, getting an RBI groundout by Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.), but the Hawks added two of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-4.

In the top of the eighth, JWU loaded the bases with one out, Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, which was followed up by a pinch-hit RBI single by John Kuschman (Glastonbury, Conn.), cutting the lead to 8-6.  Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) entered with two outs, getting a groundout to second base to end the rally. After the Hawks added one in the bottom of the eighth, Dunn came back out in the ninth, striking out the side with a walk in between to get his fourth save of the season.

With the win, Roger Williams improves to 14-6 while Johnson & Wales falls to 16-10 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, April 9th when they host Framingham State in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Splits GNAC Double Header With Rivier

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team split with Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon.  Rivier took the first game by a score of 5-4 with Johnson & Wales taking a 16-1 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Rivier took an early lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI bunt single by senior Franco Pisano (Lynnfield, Mass.) and a two run single by senior John McMahon (Somerville, Mass.), giving the Raiders a 3-0 advantage.  Johnson & Wales rallied in the top of the fifth when junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) led off with a double.  Senior Bran Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) then capitalized on a four base error, scoring Newsome to cut the lead to 3-2.  Rivier responded with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, putting the team up 5-2.  In the top of the seventh, junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) hit a two run double to right center that cut the lead to 5-4.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Rivier held on for the 5-4 victory.  Senior Isaac Burkett (Hudson, N.H.) notched the complete game victory, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.  McMahon was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the victory for Rivier.  Newsome was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the setback for Johnson & Wales.   

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first of the second game on a sacrifice fly by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.), scoring Newsome.  Jackson’s sacrifice fly in the top of the third gave the Wildcats the 2-0 lead and Ziman’s RBI single put JWU ahead 3-0.  Junior John Kuschman’s (Glastonbury, Conn.) run scoring double in the top of the fourth made the score 4-0 and an RBI single by Newsome gave the Wildcats the 5-0 advantage.  JWU upped its lead to 6-0 after an RBI groundout by senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) and Newsome later scored on a wild pitch to put the Wildcats up 7-0.  JWU broke the game open seven more runs in the top of the sixth, including a two run single by freshman Mike Murphy (Pawtucket, R.I.) to take the 14-0 advantage.  Rivier got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by junior Robert Stump (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).  JWU capped off the scoring for the afternoon with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh en route to the 16-1 victory.  Newsome was 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI while junior Rich Fonseca (Riverside, R.I.) was 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI in the win for the Wildcats.  Stump was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the setback for Rivier.  Junior Bobby Gilbert (Florham Park, N.J.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Wildcats are now 16-9 for the season, 7-1 in the GNAC while Rivier is 7-7 for the season, 3-1 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Tuesday, April 8th when they travel to Roger Williams for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Sweeps Albertus Magnus In GNAC Double Header

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team swept Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales took a 10-5 win in the opener and finished the sweep with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Albertus Magnus jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by senior J.R. Bagley (Middletown, Conn.) in the top of the first.  Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the first when a pair of run scoring singles by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) and senior Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) gave the Wildcats the 2-1 lead.  A two run single by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) pushed JWU’s lead to 4-1 after two innings of play.  Junior Eric Rapuano’s (Clinton, Conn.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third made the score 5-1 and Ziman put the Wildcats up 8-1 with a three run home run in the bottom of the fourth.  Jackson notched a two run double in the bottom of the fifth put JWU ahead 10-1.  Albertus Magnus capitalized on a JWU miscue in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 10-2 on an RBI groundout by sophomore Nick Roeder (Berlin, Conn.).  The Falcons continued to chip away at the lead when a two run single by sophomore Erik Suraci (West Haven, Conn.) and an RBI single by junior Dave Smith (Flanders, N.J.) cut the lead to 10-5 in the top of the seventh.  AMC loaded the bases with two outs, but that would be as close as they would get, however as JWU took the 10-5 victory.  Ziman was 3-for-3 with five RBI while junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the victory for Johnson & Wales.  Smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the setback for Albertus Magnus.  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) notched the win on the mound for JWU, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

In the nightcap, JWU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) and an RBI double by Ziman.  In the top of the third, Almertus Magnus cut the lead to 2-1 when senior Jeff King (New Haven, Conn.) led off with a single and later scored on a failed pick off attempt.  JWU responded in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-1 lead on a run scoring single by Ziman.  Once again, Albertus answered when an RBI double by senior Steve Carosella (Waterbury, Conn.) cut the lead to 3-2.  JWU tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice hit by freshman Teddy Katz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to push their lead to 5-2.  In the top of the seventh, Albertus Magnus rallied when a two run single by Bagley made the score 5-4.  That would be all for the Falcons, however as the Wildcats held on for the 5-4 win.  Melendez earned the complete game victory, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

JWU Baseball Falls To Babson, 18-4
April 3, 2008

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped an 18-4 decision against Babson in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.

Babson took an early 1-0 lead when an RBI single by sophomore Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) in the top of the first.  Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by sophomore Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.).  Babson regained the lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Ahern, putting the Beavers up 2-1.  Once again the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the third when a two run double by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) gave the team a 3-2 lead.  In the top of the fourth, Babson took a 4-3 lead after an RBI single by senior Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by Ahern.  The visiting Beavers broke open the game in the in the top of the fifth with five runs, including a two run single by Ahern, putting the team ahead 9-3.  Babson added nine more in the seventh inning with a two run double by senior Robbie Leer (Edina, Minn.) and a two run single by sophomore Peter O’Toole (Salem, Mass.) en route to the 18-4 win.

Delaney went 4-for-4 with four runs and two RBI while Ahern went 4-for-5 with seven RBI in the win for Babson.  Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the setback for Johnson & Wales.

Junior Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for Babson, allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings of work.

Johnson & Wales is now 13-8 while Babson improves to 12-7 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 4th when they host Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest, starting at 12:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Upends Mass. Maritime, 9-3

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team posted a 9-3 victory against Massachusetts Maritime in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon. The win was the sixth straight for the Wildcats.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) led off with a bunt single and capitalized on a Mass. Maritime error to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) added a solo home run to give JWU the 2-0 lead after the first inning of play. Mass. Maritime responded in the top of the third inning when an RBI single by senior Anthony Barrett (Bridgewater, Mass.) cut the lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the third, an RBI groundout by senior Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) and a run scored on a wild pitch gave JWU the 4-1 lead. Once again, Mass. Maritime responded with a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by junior Tyler Spofford (Sharon Springs, N.Y.), making the score 4-2. Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) belted an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to again give JWU the three run advantage at 5-2. Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth and the Wildcats added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-2 advantage. The team would then take the 9-3 victory.

Ziman was 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI while Newsome was 1-for-2 with three runs scored in the victory for JWU. Barrett was 3-for-5 with an RBI in the setback for Mass. Maritime.

Sophomore Jeff Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.) picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

Johnson & Wales is now 13-7 while Mass. Maritime falls to 10-5 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, April 3rd when they host Babson in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:45 p.m.

JWU Baseball Downs Mitchell, 7-2

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team defeated Mitchell, 7-2 in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when junior Frank Nadjavetsky (Avenel, N.J.) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.) in the bottom of the second..  Mitchell responded in the top of the third when an RBI single by freshman Jeffery Perillo (Newington, Conn.) knotted the game at 1-1 and the Pequots went ahead 2-1 on a run scoring double by freshman Brandyn Michalak (Ledyard, Conn.).

The Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they tallied three runs, including a two run single by senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.).  JWU took control of the game in the bottom of the seventh with three more runs.   Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) led off the inning with a solo home run and the Wildcats added two more on a two run single by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.), giving the team the 7-2 lead.  Jackson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Wengzn went 2-for-3 with one and two RBI in the win for JWU.

Senior Josh Hodge (Sherburne, N.Y.) picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Johnson & Wales is now 12-7 while Mitchell falls to 6-8 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd when they host Mass. Maritime in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Sweeps Saint Joseph’s of Maine

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team swept Saint Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales posted a 7-5 win in the opener and finished the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 1-0 on an RBI groundout by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) in the top of the first inning.  Saint Joseph’s knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by sophomore Ben Grant-Roy’s (Biddeford, Maine).  Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run and the Wildcats added two more in the frame to take the 4-1 lead.  Melendez’s RBI double in the top of the third put JWU ahead 5-1.  Senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) notched a run scoring double in the fifth to extend the advantage to 6-1.  Saint Joseph’s responded in the bottom of the fifth when a two run triple by senior Luke Enman (Milan, N.H.) cut the lead to 6-3.  Senior Dustin Spiller’s (Gorham, Maine) sacrifice fly then made the score 6-4.  The Wildcats added to their lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Jackson, giving the squad a 7-4 advantage.  The Monks rallied in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead to 7-5 on an RBI triple by Spiller.  That would be as close as the team would get, however as JWU held on for the 7-5 victory.  Jackson was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI in the win for the Wildcats.  Enman was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for Saint Joseph’s.   Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) pitched a complete game victory for JWU, allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Johnson & Wales took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by junior Rich Fonseca (Riverside, R.I.) and a run scoring single by Jackson.  Saint Joseph’s cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Grant-Roy.  The Wildcats added a run in the fifth, but the visiting Monks responded in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run to cut the lead to 3-2.  In the top of the seventh, Melendez hit a sacrifice fly to put JWU ahead 4-2.  Saint Joseph’s threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two outs.  They could not move the runners across, however as JWU took the 4-2 victory.  Melendez was 1-for-2 with an RBI at the plate and was also solid on the mound, allowing two runs on nine hits in seven innings.

The Wildcats are now 11-7 for the season, 4-0 in the GNAC while Saint Joseph’s falls to 7-10 for the season, 0-4 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Tuesday, April 1st when they host Mitchell in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Sweeps Norwich In GNAC Twin Bill

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team notched two wins against Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales took a 19-7 win in the opener and closed out the afternoon with a 10-6 win in the nightcap.
 
In the opener, Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first after a three run double by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.).  Norwich responded in the top of the second on a two run single by senior Dominic Sorrentino (Wakefield, Mass.).  In the bottom of the second, JWU broke the game open, scoring 10 runs en route to the 14-2 advantage.  The inning was highlighted by a three run double by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) and a two run home run by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.).  The Wildcats then cruised to the 19-7 victory.  Wengzn went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI while Jackson was 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI for JWU.  Freshman Kory Delehanty (Newburypost, Mass.) paced Norwich, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Sophomore Jeff Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.) picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.
 
Senior Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) gave Johnson & Wales an early lead in the second game of the afternoon when his two run double in the bottom of the first put the team ahead 4-0.  The Wildcats added to their lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Ziman, making the score 6-1.  JWU scored three more in the bottom of the fourth, including a two run double by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.), putting the team ahead 9-1.  JWU notched another run in the bottom of the fifth en route to the 10-6 victory.  Melendez was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI in the victory for the Wildcats.  Junior Bobby Gilbert (Florham Park, N.J.) earned the win for Johnson & Wales, allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts in six innings.
 
The Wildcats are now 9-7 for the season, 2-0 in the GNAC while Norwich falls to 1-9 for the season, 0-2 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Sunday, March 30th when they host St. Joseph’s of Maine in a GNAC double header, starting at 12:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Falls To UMass Boston, 8-6

East Providence, R.I. – UMass Boston scored five runs in the top of the ninth en route to an 8-6 come from behind victory against Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.), scoring junior Mike Newsome (Providence, R.I.).  UMass Boston responded in the top of the second when junior Eric Salvador (Middleboro, Mass.) led off with a single and scored on a JWU error.  The visiting Beacons took a 2-1 advantage on a sacrifice fly by freshman Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.).

JWU knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.).  The Wildcats added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Newsome, giving the squad the 4-2 advantage.  Once again UMass Boston responded in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Danny Arenas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), making the score 4-3.  

In the top of the ninth, an RBI single by junior Jake Chastain (Northfield, Mass.) knotted the game at 4-4.  The Beacons took their first lead of the game when a grand slam home run by sophomore Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, N.H.) put the team ahead 8-4.  The Wildcats rallied in the bottom of the ninth when they capitalized on a UMass Boston miscue to cut the lead to 8-6.  The team loaded the bases, but couldn’t push any more runs across as UMass Boston held on for the 8-6 victory.

Senior Josh Hodge (Sherburne, N.Y.) suffered the loss for JWU, allowing five runs on two hits in one inning of relief.  Melendez as solid on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in five innings of work.  Freshman Mike Cain (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up the win in relief for UMass Boston, pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

The Wildcats are now 7-7 for the season while UMass Boston improves to 4-9 for the season.  JWU will return to action on Thursday, March 27th when they host Fitchburg State in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Knocks Off Coach Guard, 12-1

New London, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team posted a 12-1 victory against Coast Guard in a non-conference contest on the road on Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats led 3-1 heading into the seventh when junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.) led off the inning with a solo homer to right field to begin the six run inning in which Johnson & Wales had eight hits, sending 12 batters to the plate. Senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit his three-run shot to right to make the score 7-1 before junior Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J.) added an RBI double and junior John Kuschman (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an RBI single to close the scoring in the seventh.

Ziman drove in four runs as he also had a sacrifice fly in the third while senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) led the Wildcats with three hits.  Junior Robert Gilbert (Florham Park, N.J.) allowed just one unearned run and allowed three hits with four strike out to pick up the win for the Wildcats.  Kevin Thomas took the loss. For Coast Guard.

The Wildcats are now 7-6 for the season while Coast Guard falls to 4-7 for the season.  JWU will return to action on Wednesday, March 24th when they host UMass Boston in a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Sweeps Husson In Double Header

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team swept a pair of non-conference contests against Husson at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon.  JWU took a 7-6 win in the opener and finished off the day with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Husson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after a two run double by sophomore Dennis Graham (Miramichi, New Brunswick) in the top of the second.  Junior Brian McGinley (Hermon, Maine) put the Hawks ahead 3-0 on an RBI single in the top of the third.  The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the fourth when a five run inning gave the team the 5-3 lead.  The inning was highlighted by a three run double by senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.).  The visiting Hawks rallied for three in the top of the seventh on a two run home run by freshman Chris Maguire (Orland, Maine) and an RBI single by freshman Logan York (Presque Isle, Maine) to take the 6-5 advantage.  Once again, the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the seventh.  Senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by junior Justin Maldonado (South Burlington, Vt.) to knot the game at 6-6.  Junior Eric Rapuano (Clinton, Conn.) then provided what would prove to be the game-winning hit when an RBI single scored senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) to put the team up 7-6.  Senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) picked up the win for JWU, allowing six runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Fellow senior Josh Hodge (Sherburne, N.Y.) earned up the save with two innings of hitless relief.

In the second game, the Wildcats got on the board early when sophomore Waldis Garcis (Lowell, Mass.) led off with a bunt single and capitalized on a pair of Husson errors to come all the way around to score, giving JWU the 1-0 lead.  Jackson then followed with a solo home run to put the team up 2-0.  An RBI single by freshman Tom Crews (Bangor, Maine) in the top of the sixth helped the Hawks cut the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the sixth, Jackson belted his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to put the Wildcats in front by a score of 4-1.  The team added an insurance run in the eighth en route to the 5-1 victory.  Sophomore Jeff Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.) notched up the win for JWU, allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in seven innings.  Sophomore Nick Marine (Bristol, R.I.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Wildcats.

Jackson was 4-for-8 with two runs and six RBI in the two wins for JWU.  Crews went 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI in the day for Husson.

The Wildcats are now 6-6 for the season while Husson falls to 4-10 for the season.  JWU will return to action on Monday, March 24th when they travel to Coast Guard for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Drops 2-1 Decision Against WPI

Worcester, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision against Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference contest at the Class of 1893 Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales scored its only run in the third inning when junior Mike Newsome (Providence, R.I.) led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on junior Jonathan Melendez’s (Providence, R.I.) sacrifice fly to center.

WPI tied the game on Scott McNee's (Falmouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly in the fourth before Mike Swanton's (Foxboro, Mass.) two-out double to left center plated Ryan Rainone in the bottom of the sixth inning.

WPI’s Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI) did not allow an earned run while tossing a complete game for the Engineers.  Johnson & Wales got strong pitching performances form senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) and sophomore Jeff Jordan (Woodbridge, N.J.).  The duo each allowed a run with Hufnagel going the first five frames and Jordan going the final three.

Swanton and McNee each had two hits for the Engineers while Newsome and senior Mike MacKay (Pawtucket, R.I.) each laced a pair of base hits for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are now 3-6 for the season while WPI improves to 7-5 for the season.  JWU will return to action on Thursday, March 20th when they travel to Coast Guard for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:00 p.m.

JWU Baseball Wraps Up Southern Trip With Two Victories

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team finished its annual southern trip with a pair of victories, defeating Rose-Hulman 7-6 on Friday and winning 9-6 at Greensboro on Sunday evening.
 
In the win over Rose-Hulman, senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a run scored.  Fellow senior Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on 11 hits.  He struck out three in the victory.
 
Against Greensboro, senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.) and junior Frank Nadjavestky (Avenel, N.J.) each notched a pair of hits.  Senior Josh Hodge (Sherburne, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in one and a third innings of work.
 
Senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) leads the team in hitting with a .500 average.  Fellow senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) is batting .379 with five runs and four RBI for the year.  Junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) has been impressive both at the plate and on the mound.  He has posted a .320 batting average, eight runs and six RBI.  He also has a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings of work.  Sophomore Nick Marine (Bristol, R.I.) has posted a 1-1 record with a 2.70 ERA.
 
The Wildcats are now 3-5 for the season and will open the northern portion of their schedule on Tuesday, March 18th when they travel to WPI for a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Baseball Competing In Annual Southern Trip

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales baseball team is currently competing in its annual southern trip and has posted a 1-5 record.

Senior Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) leads the team with a .450 average, three runs and three RBI while fellow senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.) is hitting .444 with three RBI during the trip.  The Wildcats have eight players hitting over .300 and the squad is averaging over five runs per game.

On the mound, sophomore Nick Marine (Bristol, R.I.) has posted a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA.

The Wildcats have two games remaining in their southern trip and will open the northern portion of their schedule on Tuesday, March 18th when they travel to WPI for a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.

Senior Alex Hurley (East Hartford, Conn.) was named the GNAC Player of the Year for the second straight season after completely re-writing the JWU career record book, batting .429 with 56 runs, 52 RBI, 11 home runs and 30 stolen bases. He also was named to the New England Baseball Coaches Association All-New England team. Joining Hurley on the All-GNAC first team was junior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) who hit .396 with 27 runs and 42 RBI. Juniors Mike Manley (Verona, N.J.) and Erik Hufnagel (Sykesville, Md.) were named All-GNAC second team performers for the Wildcats. Manley hit .298 with 19 runs and 26 RBI while Hufnagel was 6-1 with a 1.93 ERA.
