JWU Men’s Basketball Earns Bid To 2008 ECAC Division III New England Championship

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team has been awarded with a bid to the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Championship, announced by the ECAC offices on Monday afternoon.
 
Johnson & Wales is the six seed for the tournament after posting a 15-11 record and reaching the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship.  The GNAC had three schools selected for the tournament as Emerson and Emmanuel will be joining the Wildcats in the field of eight.
 
The Wildcats are led by the senior trio of Japhet Kerr (Mt Kisco, N.Y.), Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.).  All three were named All-GNAC selections.  Kerr is averaging 20.4 points with 4.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game.  Samuels is adding 14.3 points and eight rebounds per game.  McCray is chipping in with 16.7 points per game and is pulling down 6.8 rebounds per contest.
 
JWU will travel to Newbury to face the third-seeded Nighthawks in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Places Three On All-GNAC Team

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team placed three players on the Great Northeast Athletic All-Conference team, as announced by the league office this afternoon.  Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) was named to the first team, senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) was a second team performer while senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) was a third team selection.

Kerr is making his second consecutive appearance on the all-conference first team.  He finished second in the league in scoring with 20.4 points per game, fifth in assists with 4.2 and sixth in steals at 2.0.  A two-time GNAC Player of the Week, he was in double figures in all but three games this season.  He scored 30 or more points five times this year.

Samuels is making his first appearance as an all-GNAC player.  He earned GNAC Player of the Week honors on two occasions and finished the year 13th in the league in scoring with 14.3 points per game.  He was also seventh in the league in rebounding with eight per contest.  For the year, he notched six double-doubles.

McCray earned third-team honors for the second straight season.  The senior forward was seventh in the league in scoring with 16.7 points per game and was 11th in the league with 6.8 rebounds per contest.  His 45.2% field-goal percentage and 1.6 steals per game both rank him among the top 15 in the league.  He had four double-doubles for the Wildcats and scored 20 or more points on seven occasions.

Johnson & Wales finished the season with a 15-11 record.

JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To St. Joseph’s Of Maine, 71-68 In GNAC Quarterfinals

Providence, R.I. – Junior Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, N.Y.) scored a team high 19 points and added four steals to lead St. Joseph’s of Maine to a 71-68 victory against Johnson & Wales in the quarterfinals of the Great Athletic Conference men’s basketball championship at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Raymond Eatmon (Huntington, N.Y.) added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win for St. Joseph’s.

Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) led the way for Johnson & Wales with 22 points and three steals while Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the setback for the Wildcats.

The two teams traded baskets early with the score tied 11-11 with 14:17 left in the first half.  St. Joseph’s then used a 5-0 run, capped by a layup by Murphy to take the 16-11 advantage with 12:23 left.  Johnson & Wales then used a run of their own and took a 23-18 lead on a three pointer by Kerr with 10:00 on the clock.  The Wildcats led by as many as seven points late in the first half and held a 32-25 lead after a three pointer by sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) with 5:50 remaining in the stanza.  St. Joseph’s battled back, however and trailed just 41-40 heading into the locker room at halftime.  Both teams shot well from the field in the first half with St. Joseph’s hitting 60% of their shots while JWU hit on 50% from the field.

Johnson & Wales led by as many as five early in the second half when a layup by senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) gave the team a 51-46 lead with 13:40 left on the clock.  St. Joseph’s then used a 19-4 run, capped by a three pointer by sophomore Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) with 5:56 remaining in the contest.  The visiting Monks led by 10 (69-59) with 2:28 left before Johnson & Wales used a 9-1 run, including a pair of free throws by Kerr to make the score 70-68 with :24 left.  After Murphy hit the first of two free throws, he missed the second one with eight seconds left to give the Wildcats had one last shot.  It was not enough though as McCray’s three-pointer at the buzzer hit the rim to give St. Joseph’s the 71-68 victory.

With the win, St. Joseph’s is now 14-12 while Johnson & Wales falls to 15-11.  The Monks will return to action on Thursday, February 28th when they travel to Emerson for a semifinal match up in the GNAC tournament.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Downs Rivier, 90-82

Providence, R.I. --  Senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a career-high 39 points and added four rebounds to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s basketball team to a 90-82 victory against Rivier in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Tuesday evening. 

Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) tallied 17 points and added six rebounds and three assists while sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) had 19 points, five boards and five assists in the win for the Wildcats.  Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) rounded out the double figure scorers for JWU with 10 points and four assists.

Rivier was led by junior Lance Bisson (Nashua, N.H.) with 29 points, nine assists and six rebounds while senior Jeff Carpenter (Meredith, N.H.) added 26 points and five boards in the setback for the Raiders.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and had an 18-11 advantage after a hree-pointer by Faust with 16:28 left in the first half.  Rivier responded with a 15-7 and held a 26-26 lead after a jumper by Carpenter with 9:03 on the clock.  The Wildcats then used a 19-0 run of their own, capped by a jumper by senior McCray to take the 44-26 lead with 4:00 on the clock.  JWU took a 48-32 lead into halftime after shooting 55.2% from the field.

The Wildcats led by as many as 19 points early in the second half before Rivier started chipping away at the lead.  The visiting Raiders cut the lead to just five points when a layup by Bisson made the score 80-75 with 1:21 left.  That would be as close as the Raiders would get, however as the Wildcats hit seven of eight from the line in the last minute to hold on for the 90-82 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 15-9 overall and 12-6 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 11-12, 8-8 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, February 21st  when they wrap up the regular season with a non conference contest on the road against Coast Guard at 7:00 p.m.


Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Falls To Emmanuel, 55-54

Providence, R.I. --  Junior Mack Spellman (Clinton, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to give Emmanuel a 55-54 victory against Johnson & Wales in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest at the Harborside RAC on Saturday evening. 

Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) tallied 15 points and added five assists, three rebounds and three steals while sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) had 15 points and five boards in the setback for the Wildcats.

Spellman tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win for the visiting Saints.  Junior Andres Bustamante scored eight points and added nine boards for Emmanuel in the victory. 

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 12-5 advantage after a three pointer by Kerr with 14:48 left in the first half.  Emerson responded, however and tied the game at 16-16 on a layup by freshman Torrey Joyner (Bridgeport, Conn.) with 9:42 left in the half.  JWU then used a 10-0 run to take the 26-16 advantage with 5:24 on the clock.  The Wildcats took the 30-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Emmanuel started the second half with a 14-6 run and tied the game at 36-36 on a layup by Bustamante with 13:53 remaining in the contest.  The two teams then traded leads with the Wildcats holding a 54-52 advantage after senior Charlie Ware (Baltimore, Md.) made the first of two free throws with :17 left on the clock.  Ware missed the second and Emmanuel controlled the rebound.  Spellman’s three-pointer with six seconds left gave the visiting Saints the 55-54 lead.  The Wildcats would have one last chance, but a Kerr jumper hit off the side of the rim as Emmanuel held on for the 55-54 victory.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the GNAC while Emmanuel improves to 16-7, 14-2 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 19th when they host Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up that begins at 7:00 p.m.


JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To Albertus Magnus, 69-65

New Haven, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team dropped a 69-65 decision to Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference on the road on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) led the way with 27 points and seven rebounds while senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 17 points and four boards. Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Wildcats with 10 points and six boards in the setback.

Adam Hovan scored 16 points and added four rebounds for Albertus Magnus while Walden St. Juste added 15 points, five boards and three assists in the victory for the Falcons.

With the loss, JWU is now 14-8 overall and 11-5 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 2-20, 2-14 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 16th when they host Emmanuel for a GNAC contest at 3:00 p.m.


JWU Men’s Basketball Wins 98-92 Overtime Thriller At St. Joseph’s
of Maine

Standish, Maine. -- Seniors Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) combined to score 63 points to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to a thrilling 98-92 overtime victory against St. Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales was led by Kerr who tallied a game-high 33 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Samuels added 30 points and nine rebounds in the victory for the Wildcats. Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) scored 15 points while sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) added 12 points for JWU.

Saint Joseph’s sophomore Ray Eatmon (Huntington, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 18 points and 16 boards. Freshman Eric Friend (Portland, Maine) scored 12 points in the setback for the Monks.

St. Joseph’s controlled the action early on in the contest. The Monks used an 11-0 run that began at the thirteen-minute mark to stake an early 25-13 lead over the Wildcats. SJC took 49-40 lead into the locker room heading into halftime. The Monks extended their lead to thirteen points (53-40) just four minutes into the second half. Johnson & Wales responded, however with a 12-5 run to cut the lead to 58-52 midway through the second half.

JWU senior Charlie Ware (Baltimore, Md.) made pair of free throws with 49 seconds remaining to tie the game at 84 apiece. After a St. Joseph’s turnover, Faust grabbed a loose ball and dished to Samuels, who converted on a jumper to provide the Wildcats with the team’s first lead of the game with just 15 seconds remaining. Eatmon then hit a jumper with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 86-84. JWU had one last chance at the end of regulation, but couldn’t convert as the game went into overtime, tied 86-86.

The Wildcats controlled the action in the overtime period, outscoring the Monks by a 12-6 margin en route to the 98-92 victory.

With the win, JWU is now 14-7 overall and 11-4 in the GNAC while St. Joseph’s falls to 10-10, 8-5 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 12th when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a GNAC contest at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To Emerson, 63-61

Providence, R.I. – Senior Ben Chase (Newburyport, Mass.) scored 21 points and added six rebounds and four steals to lead Emerson to a 63-61 victory against Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.

Senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for Johnson & Wales.  Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 14 points and seven rebounds while fellow senior Charlie Ware (Baltimore, Md.) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards in the setback for the Wildcats.

Emerson sophomore Jeremy Shannon (Lowell, Mass.) scored 14 points and added five rebounds and five assists while sophomore Brian Rouse (East Greenwich, R.I.) added 12 points and eight boards in the victory for the Lions.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and held a 28-16 advantage after a jumper by McCray with 6:25 left in the first half.  Emerson responded, however and used a 12-4 run to close out the half and make the score 32-28 heading into the locker room at halftime.  JWU out rebounded Emerson by a 25-11 margin and had 16 second chance points.  The visiting Lions were able to force 14 JWU turnovers.

Emerson continued its strong play early in the second half and took their first lead since early in the first half when a free throw by Rouse gave the Lions a 33-32 lead with 18:17 remaining.  The two teams then traded baskets with the score tied 45-45 with 10:04 left on the clock.  Emerson then used a 10-2 run, capped by a layup by senior Will Dawkins (Springfield, Mass.) to take a 55-47 lead with 6:38 remaining.  The Lions led by as many as nine points (60-51) down the stretch before JWU went on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 63-61 on a layup by McCray with three seconds left.  The Wildcats went for the steal on the inbounds pass, however Emerson successfully pushed the ball up court to seal the 63-61 victory.

With the loss, JWU is now 13-7 overall and 10-4 in the GNAC while Emerson improves to 16-3 on the season and 9-3 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 9th when they travel to St. Joseph’s of Maine for a GNAC contest, starting at 3:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To Norwich, 71-63

Northfield, Vt. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team dropped a 71-63 decision against Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Andrews Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales placed four players in double figures in the setback. Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) recorded a team high 16 points and added four rebounds while senior Greg Samuels narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) added 16 points, six boards and five assists. Fellow senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Wildcats with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals in the setback.

Jerrold Williams notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Norwich while Jamel Bedford added a game-high 19 points for the Cadets. Mike Filipek was also in double figures in the victory for Norwich with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The two teams traded leads throughout the early stages of the first half before JWU used an 11-4 run, capped by a three pointer by Kerr to take a 17-13 lead with 9:50 left in the first half. The game was tied 27-27 before a 5-0 run, capped by a three point play by Derrick Monteiro, gave Norwich the 32-27 lead with just under a minute left in the first half. Norwich took the 32-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.

JWU’s Faust tied the game at 33-33 early in the second half before a 12-0 run, including a three point play by Jarren Jeffcoat, to take the 45-33 advantage with 13:04 left in the contest. The Wildcats responded, however and cut the lead to 46-44 after a jumper by Kerr with just over nine minutes remaining. That would be as close as JWU would get, however as Norwich held on down the stretch for the 71-63 victory.

Johnson & Wales is now 13-6 on the season and 10-3 in the GNAC while Norwich improves to 11-7, 7-5 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 5th when they host Emerson in a GNAC contest, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Posts 88-78 Win Over Daniel Webster

Providence, R.I. --  Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) notched 28 points and added eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to an 88-78 victory against Daniel Webster in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Saturday afternoon.

JWU sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) tallied 25 points and three rebounds while senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 14 points and four rebounds for the Wildcats in the victory.

Daniel Webster freshman Ahmad Hemingway (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a team-high 25 points and added five assists and three steals.  Freshman Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) tallied 21 points on seven three pointers and added seven rebounds in the setback for the Eagles.

The two teams traded baskets during the early stages of the first half with the score tied 18-18 with 10:42 left on the clock.  Daniel Webster then used a 6-0 run, capped by a three pointer by Hanson to take a 24-18 advantage with 8:38 left on the clock.  The Wildcats responded, however and used a 10-2 run to take a 28-26 lead on a layup by Kerr with 3:06 left in the first half.  The Wildcats took the 35-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The game was tied 40-40 just three minutes into the second half before a 9-2 run by the Wildcats put the team up 49-42 with 14:51 remaining in the contest.  JWU took its first double digit lead when a three pointer by Kerr gave them a 66-56 advantage with 8:50 left.  The Wildcats would then take the 88-78 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 11-5 overall and 8-2 in the GNAC while Daniel Webster falls to 3-11, 1-8 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, January 29th when they travel to Lasell for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up that begins at 7:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Drops Mt. Ida, 85-37

Providence, R.I. – Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points and added three rebounds to lead Johnson & Wales to an 85-37 victory against Mount Ida in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center.

The Wildcats had five players in double figures, including senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) who scored 16 points and added three steals while senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the victory for JWU.  Senior Cornejo Rogers (Anguilla, West Indies) had a game-high 10 rebounds and added sox points and five blocks for the Wildcats.
 
Junior Otis Thompson (Gardner, Mass.) led the way for Mount Ida with nine points and nine rebounds.  Junior Matt Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) added six points and seven boards in the setback for the Mustangs.
 
Johnson & Wales opened up the game with a 13-3 run, capped by a three pointer by Faust at the 13:11 mark.  The Wildcats then used a 15-2 run and held a 28-5 advantage after a three pointer by junior Xavier Lewis (Fitchburg, Mass.) at the 8:18 mark.  JWU took a 47-12 lead into the locker room after holding Mount Ida to 16% from the field while forcing 16 turnovers.
 
The Wildcats continued to build on their lead early in the second half and took a 68-28 lead on a three-pointer midway through the half.  The team then cruised to the 87-35 victory.  Mt. Ida was held to just 28.3% shooting from the field and the Mustangs committed 29 turnovers in the loss.
 
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the GNAC while Mt. Ida falls to 6-10, 3-6 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 26th when they host Daniel Webster in a GNAC contest, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Upends Suffolk, 90-74

Providence, R.I. --  Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) scored 34 points and added five rebounds and four steals to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to a 90-74 victory against Suffolk in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Monday evening.

Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Wildcats with 13 points and four assists.

Sophomore Alan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) led the way for Suffolk with 19 points, three rebounds and three steals while junior Brian Small (Stoughton, Mass.) notched 18 points and seven boards in the setback for the Rams.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage after a jumper by senior Cornejo Rogers (Anguilla, BWI) at the 15:18 mark.  Suffolk responded, however and took a 17-16 lead on a jumper by sophomore Joseph Ransom (Sheffield, England) with 9:02 remaining in the first half.  The two teams would trade leads for the remainder of the first half with Suffolk holding a 41-37 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

There were six lead changed during the early portion of the second half with the score tied 66-66 with 8:07 left on the clock.  Johnson & Wales then used an 11-3 run, capped by jumper by Faust to take the 77-69 lead with 6:16 left in the game.  The Wildcats closed the game on a 24-8 run to take the 90-74 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the GNAC while Suffolk falls to 2-12, 1-7 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 24th when they host Mount Ida in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up that begins at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Drops 76-69 Decision Against Emmanuel

Boston, Mass. -- The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team dropped a 76-69 decision against Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Yawkey Center on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) tallied 21 points, five rebounds and four assists while fellow senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) added 21 points and five rebounds for the Wildcats.  Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Wildcats, finishing the game with 17 points, seven steals and three rebounds.

Rob Williams-Hamilton notched a game-high 31 points and added four rebounds and three steals in the victory for Emmanuel while Mack Spellman had a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards for the Saints.

Emmanuel jumped out to an early 20-8 lead after a layup by Spellman with 15:09 left n the first half.  The Wildcats responded, however and used a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 24-21 on a layup by Kerr with 8:54 remaining in the half.  Emmanuel led by as many as 11 late in the half and took the 43-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Saints pushed their lead to 15 when a layup by Jackson made the score 58-43 with 12:08 remaining in the game.  Once again, JWU responded with a 17-4 run, capped by a jumper by McCray with 6:13 left, making the score 62-60.  The Wildcats trailed by just one when a jumper by senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the score 66-65 with 3:46 on the clock.  Emmanuel then closed the game on a 10-4 run, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the line during the last thirty seconds to seal the 76-69 victory.With the loss, JWU is now 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the GNAC while Emmanuel improves to 8-5, 6-1 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Monday, January 21st  when they host Suffolk in a GNAC contest at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Downs Albertus Magnus, 84-66

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.)  led all scorers with 25 points and added seven rebounds to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball to a 84-66 victory against Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference on Thursday evening.

Johnson & Wales sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) tallied 21 points, five assists and five rebounds while senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards in the victory for the Wildcats.

Freshman Walden St. Juste (Hartford, Conn.) paced Albertus Magnus with 12 points and three rebounds while junior John Donahue (Southington, Conn.) added 12 points and two assists in the setback for the Falcons.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and held a 17-3 advantage after a jumper by Samuels at the 12:05 mark.  The Wildcats led 33-13 on a jumper by freshman Stephan Rolfe (Berlin, Mass.) with 7:09 left and took a 46-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.  JWU held Albertus Magnus to 39.5% shooting from the field and forced 15 Falcons turnovers in the first half. 

JWU pushed their lead to 26 points when a pair of free throws by McCray gave the team a 59-33 advantage with 14:12 left in the contest.  Albertus Magnus responded with a 21-6 run, capped by a layup by junior Shawn Mendenhall (Bridgeport, Conn.) to make the score 65-54 with 9:28 on the clock.  That would be as close as the Falcons would get, however, as JWU closed the game with a 19-8 run to take the 84-66 victory.

With the win, JWU is now 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 1-12, 1-6 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 19th when they travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC contest at 3:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Drops Mt. Ida, 79-57

Newton Centre, Mass. --  Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) notched a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s basketball team to a 79-57 road victory against Mt. Ida in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 19 points and six rebounds while sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) added 17 points and three rebounds in the victory for the Wildcats.

Otis Thompson paced Mt. Ida with 14 points and six rebounds while Matt Bennett added 13 points and four boards in the setback for the Mustangs.

The two teams traded leads with the score tied 19-19 midway through the first half.  JWU then used a 13-4 run, capped by a pair of free throws from McCray to take a 32-23 lead with 4:15 left in the first half.  The Wildcats would take the 39-29 lead into the locker room at halftime on the strength if 58.3% shooting from the field.

The Wildcats broke the game open with a 17-2 run to start the second half, going ahead 56-31 after another pair of free throws by McCray.  JWU then cruised to the 79-57 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the GNAC while Mt. Ida falls to 5-7, 2-3 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 17th when they host Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast match-up that begins at 7:00 p.m.

Johnson & Wales Men’s Basketball Upends Suffolk, 102-88

Boston, Mass. -- Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) scored 30 points, while fellow senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a double-double effort of 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Johnson & Wales to a 102-88 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s basketball contest over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium.

The Wildcats used 12 unanswered points to ignite a 37-17 run that covered a nine minute span in the opening half of action en route to a 20-point (47-27) cushion with 3:09 to play before intermission, but the host Rams (2-10, 1-4 Great Northeast) whittled that margin to 55-41 at the break.

In the second half, Suffolk capped what proved to be a 45-17 run over a 12:27 stretch to take a 72-64 advantage on a jumper by freshman Mike Fleming (Exeter, N.H.) with 10:43 remaining. The Wildcats responded with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 75-74 edge on a pair of Kerr free throws with 7:20 to play, and after two Fleming free throws gave Suffolk the lead back, a Samuels lay-in on the ensuing Johnson & Wales possession gave the visitors the lead for good and sparked a 9-0 run, as the hosts got no closer than five points in the final three minutes of action.

Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) added 18 points and eight rebounds in the win for Johnson & Wales, which also received 15 points from senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) in placing four players in double figures. Senior Cornejo Rodgers (Anguilla, West Indies) shared game-high rebounding honors with Samuels by hauling down 13 boards for the Wildcats, who shot 53 percent from the field and held a commanding 56-27 rebounding advantage in overcoming 37 turnovers for the contest.

Fleming netted 21 points, including five three-pointers, in the setback for Suffolk, which also received 20 points and five steals from sophomore Alan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.). Junior Brian Small (Stoughton, Mass.) was also in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds for the Rams, who also received nine points each from freshmen Samuel Alexanian (Nashua, N.H.) and Allan Ray (Lynn, Mass.) as well as eight points from sophomore Joseph Ransom (Sheffield, England).

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC while Suffolk falls to 2-10, 1-4 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, January 15th when they travel to Mount Ida for a Great Northeast match-up that begins at 5:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To Connecticut College, 60-57

Providence, R.I. – Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points in the Johnson & Wales men’s basketball teams 60-57 setback against Connecticut College in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Thursday evening.

Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) notched 19 points and added four rebounds while fellow senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied five points and nine boards in the loss for the Wildcats.

Senior Charles Stone (Hackensack, N.J.) paced Connecticut College with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists while senior Jeff Young (East Hartford, Conn.) added 15 points and six boards in the victory for the Camels.

The two teams traded leads throughout the first half with the score tied five times, including a 22-22 deadlock with 4:26 remaining in the first half.  Johnson & Wales then outscored Connecticut College by a score of 8-3 down the stretch, including a three-pointer by Faust as time expired to give the Wildcats a 30-25 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Connecticut College used a 6-1 run to open the second half and tied the game 31-31 on jumper by Stone with 15:43 left in the game.  Once again, the two teams traded baskets with neither team holding more than a five point lead when a three-pointer by Young tied the game at 50-50 with 3:13 left in the contest.  The Camels then used a 7-2 run, capped by a layup by stone with 1:53 left to give them the 57-52 lead.  The Wildcats responded, however and cut the lead to just one when a three-pointer by Faust made the score 58-57 with :55 left.  A pair of free throws by senior Christian Mosley (Virginia Beach, Va.) put the Camels ahead 60-57 with :16 left.  Johnson & Wales had one last shot when a three pointer by senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) missed with :01 remaining to give Connecticut College the 60-57 victory.

With the loss, JWU is now 5-4 overall while Connecticut College improves to 10-2 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 12th when they travel to Suffolk University for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest, starting at 4pm.

JWU Men’s Basketball Knocks Off Norwich, 68-57

Providence, R.I. – Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) led all scorers with 28 points while adding seven assists and four rebounds to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to a 68-57 victory against Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) and Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) each tallied 19 points in the victory for the Wildcats.

Leading the way for Norwich was junior Jamel Bedford (Queens, N.Y.) with 13 points and eight rebounds while senior Jerrold Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals in the setback for the Cadets.

The two teams traded leads early on in the contest with Johnson & Wales holding a 10-9 lead with 12:54 remaining in the first half.    The Wildcats then used an 8-3 run, capped by a three pointer by Samuels to take an 18-12 advantage with 9:37 on the clock.  JWU led by as many as 12 in the first half before taking a 33-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Johnson & Wales held a double digit lead throughout most of the second half and led 52-40 after a jumper by sophomore Richard DiLascio (West Nyack, N.Y.) with 10:24 remaining.  Norwich responded with an 8-2 run and cut the lead to 54-48 on a jumper by Williams with 6:12 left on the clock.  That would be as close as the Cadets would get however as the Wildcats then cruised for the 68-57 victory.

With the win, JWU is now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC while Norwich falls to 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 10th when they host Connecticut College in a non-conference contest, starting at 7pm.

Senior Japhet Kerr Scores 1,000th Career Point In JWU Men’s Basketball Team’s 89-81 Win Over Plymouth State

Providence, R.I. – Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) became just the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 career points as his 31 points led the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team to an 89-81 victory over Plymouth State in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.  Kerr added eight assists and four rebounds for JWU.

Senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 23 points and added 10 rebounds while fellow senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) also recorded a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in the victory for the Wildcats.

Leading the way for Plymouth State was junior Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) who tallied 27 points and added three rebounds and two assists while sophomore Jason O’Keefe (Everett, Mass.) added 18 points off the bench in the setback.  Sophomore Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) was also in double figures with 14 points for the Panthers.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead, going ahead 16-7 on a jumper by sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) with 14:25 left in the half.  The Wildcats held a 23-16 advantage with 11:49 remaining before Plymouth State went on a 9-1 run, capped by a three point play by senior Phil Bourassa (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) to take the 25-24 lead with 8:15 on the clock.  The two teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the half with the score tied 39-39 at halftime.

The Wildcats controlled the action during the early stages of the second half and took their first double digit lead on a three-pointer by Samuels, making the score 59-49 with 13:57 remaining.  JWU led by as many as 13 before the visiting Panthers cut the lead to just two points when a three-pointer by Huntington made the score 70-68 with 7:28 on the clock.  That would be as close as Plymouth State would get, however as Johnson & Wales took the 89-81 victory.

JWU Men's Basketball Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 86-67
December 12. 2007

Dartmouth, Mass. -- The Johnson & Wales University  men's basketball team dropped an 86-67 decision against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a non-conference contest at the Tripp Athletic Center Wednesday evening.

The Corsairs, who used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take a 26-16 lead, outscored the Wildcats, 18-11 at the outset of the second half to build a 60-42 advantage with 13:43 remaining. JWU came back and cut the lead to nine points, 60-60 with 6:02 to play, but could come no closer.

Senior guard A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 21 points while freshman forward Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, Mass) added 14 in the win for UMD.  Senior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, Mass.) scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double double in the victory.

Senior guard Japhet Kerr (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) led Johnson & Wales with 24 points while fellow senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) had 19 and senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with 14 points in the setback.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 3-3 while UMass Dartmouth improves to 8-0 on the season.  The Wildcats will host Plymouth State in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon, starting at 3:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Defeats Roger Williams, 85-73

Providence, R.I. – Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) led all scorers with 26 points as the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team posted an 85-73 victory in a non-conference contest against Roger Williams at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Wildcats had four players in double figures as senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) added 23 points, including 13-of-14 from the line, while fellow senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched 13 points, three rebounds and two assists in the victory.  Sophomore Darren Faust (Quenns, N.Y.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points and three boards for JWU.  Johnson & Wales shot 81.6% from the line during the game, hitting 31-of-38 free throws.
 
Leading the way for Roger Williams was junior William Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) who tallied 19 points, six rebounds and six assists while junior Michael Wooley (Seattle, Wash.) added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss for the Hawks.
 
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and held an 11-5 advantage on a three-pointer by Samuels with 16:29 left in the half.  Roger Williams responded, however with a 19-6 run of their own, taking a 24-17 lead on a three-pointer by senior Dan Gumb (Patterson, N.Y.) with 10:42 left in the half.  The visiting Hawks held a 29-25 lead with just under five minutes left on the clock before JWU closed the half on an 11-4 run, capped by a tip-in by senior Charlie Ware (Baltimore, Md.) at the buzzer to give the Wildcats the 36-33 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
 
JWU controlled the action early in the second half and took its first double digit lead when a dunk on a breakaway by Samuels put the team ahead 53-43 with 13:49 remaining in the contest.  The visiting Hawks responded and cut the lead to just four points on a free throw by Wooley, making the score 53-49 with 10:37 left on the clock.  The Wildcats regained their 10 point lead on a pair of free throws by McCray, giving the team the 61-51 advantage with 7:29 remaining.  Roger Williams cut the lead to seven (61-54) with 6:54 left in the contest, but that would be as close as they would get as Johnson & Wales hit 11 free throws in the final three minutes of play to take the 85-73 victory.
 
With the win, JWU is now 3-2 while Roger Williams falls to 3-5 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, December 12th when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference contest, starting at 7:30 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Upends Lasell, 84-60

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a game-high 28 points and added 10 rebounds to help lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball to an impressive 84-60 victory against Lasell in a Great  on Thursday evening.

Johnson & Wales had four players in double figures as senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) tallied 15 points.  Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) and senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points in the victory for the Wildcats.

Junior Jose Guitian (Miami, Fla.) paced Lasell with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists while senior Dwayne Powell (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) added 19 points and six steals in the setback for the Lasers.

Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and went ahead 16-8 on a layup by McCray with 8:43 left in the half.  The Wildcats led 24-11 with just under five minutes left in the half before Lasell closed with a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 29-28 heading into the locker room at halftime.

Lasell took their first lead of the game on a jumper by Powell, giving them a 37-36 lead with 16:30 left in the game.  The Wildcats would respond with a 14-3 run, capped by a three-pointer by Kerr to take a 50-40 lead with 10:00 left in the contest.  The Wildcats controlled the action down the stretch, including hitting 11 free throws in the last two minutes to take the 84-60 victory.

With the win, JWU is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC while Lasell falls to 4-3, 1-1 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, December 8th when they host Roger Williams in a non-conference contest at 3:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Suffers 82-75 Setback Against Rhode Island College

Providence, R.I. -- Senior Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) led all scorers with 23 points in the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team’s 82-75 setback against Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest at the Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) scored 18 points and added four rebounds, two assists and three steals for Johnson & Wales while senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 14 points and six boards in the setback.  Kaseem Johnson led the way for Rhode Island College with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Tirrell Hill and Wil Lyons chipped in with 19 points apiece in the victory for the Anchormen.

Rhode Island College jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before JWU went on an 8-0 run of their own, capped by a three point play by Samuels to knot the game at 8-8 with 15:02 remaining in the first half.  RIC led by as many as 12 points late in the first half before the Wildcats used a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Faust at the buzzer to make the score 41-36 at halftime.

JWU chipped away at the lead throughout the early stages of the second half and took their first lead of the game when a three-pointer by Samuels made the score 68-67 with 4:19 remaining in the contest.  RIC regained the lead and held a four point advantage before a three-pointer by Kerr made the score 76-75 with :32 left on the clock.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as the Anchormen went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch to take the 82-75 victory.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 1-2 while RIC improves to 5-1 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, December 6th when they host Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest, starting at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Basketball Falls To Daniel Webster, 74-68

Nashua, N.H. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball team dropped a 74-68 decision against Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Vagge Gym on Satyrdat afternoon. It was the Wildcats first loss to Daniel Webster since December 2000.

Johnson & Wales was led by senior captain Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), who shot an eye catching 15 of 18 at the line en route to a game-high 30 points. Fellow senior Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) was the only other player to reach double figures for the Wildcats as he tallied 16 points and added three steals while senior Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with eight points and a game high 11 boards.

Daniel Webster was led by Arjok Guguai (Manchester, N.H. ) and Tim Jackson (W. Henrietta, N.Y.) with 11 points each in the victory.

Down by eight at 36-28 early in the second, DWC climbed back with a 10-2 run keyed by a pair of three pointers to knot the game at 38 with 15 minutes left to play. The two teams would trade the lead 15 times and have six ties over the final 15 minutes of the game.

Kerr jumper in the late put the Wildcats up 62-61 with 3:03 left, but a Jackson layup put the hosts back ahead by one with 2:07 to go. After a McCray miss, Jackson followed with a three pointer with 1:51 to go and after a Kerr miss, Guguai hit another three for a seven point lead with 1:23 to go.

A jumper by sophomore Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) and a pair of free throws from Kerr with 50 seconds left cut the lead to 71-68, but Guguai followed with a free throw as the Eagles took the 74-68 victory.

Johnson & Wales is now 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in the GNAC while Daniel Webster improves to 3-2, 1-0 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, December 4th when they visit Rhode Island College for a non-conference contest, starting at 7:30pm.


JWU Men’s Basketball Knocks Off Salve Regina, 66-60
November 29, 2007

Newport, R.I. -- Senior guard Tirone McCray (Brockton, Mass.) led all scorers with 25 points as the Johnson & Wales University men’s basketball defeated Salve Regina University, 66-60, in non-league action at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Thursday evening.

McCray did the bulk of his scoring in the first half, making 8-of-14 field goals and all three free-throw attempts, for 19 points. The lead changed hands 10 times in the first half. Salve Regina (1-3) led by seven (36-29) after junior guard Joe DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) hit his second 3-pointer with 2:51 remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats held the Seahawks scoreless for the remainder of the half while picking up single buckets from McCray and senior forward Greg Samuels (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a pair of free throws from senior guard Japhet Kerr (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.). Salve Regina held the 36-35 lead at halftime. Kerr’s 3-pointer at the 11:28 mark of the second half put the visitors up by one (48-47) before SRU’s Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, Mass.) made one of two free throws to tie the game at 48.

Both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes, a stretch which saw Seahawk leading scorer, senior Steve Walsh (Manchester, N.H.) pick up his fourth foul and head to the bench. Johnson & Wales went on a 6-0 run before Walsh ended a nearly six-minute Seahawk scoring drought with a layup (54-50 with 5:32 remaining). Walsh finished the game with a team high 18 points,

Johnson & Wales finished with 42 boards, including 19 caroms from the offensive glass, and converted 17 second-chance points. Kerr finished with 19 points while Samuels added 16 for the Wildcats.

With the win, JWU is now 1-0 on the year while Salve Regina falls to 1-3 for the season. The game will be broadcast on Cox Sports Television on Friday, November 30 at 6:30 p.m. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, December 1st when they travel to Daniel Webster for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest, starting at 1pm.
