JWU Men’s Soccer Tabbed With GNAC Accolades

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team, the 2007 GNAC Champions, was honored by the conference’s head coaches as three standouts earned All-GNAC accolades.

Senior forward Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) and senior defender Joel Reynolds (Middletown, Pa.) were named first team All-GNAC performers while fellow senior midfielder Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) earned second team accolades.   

Sousa, a four-time All-GNAC honoree, was the 2006 GNAC Player of the Year and an All-New England performer last season.  This year, he was second on the team in scoring with nine goals and six assists for 24 points.  For his career, Sousa tallied 46 goals and added 34 assists for 126 career points.  11 of his 46 goals were game-winners. 

Reynolds, a two-time All-GNAC performer, anchored a JWU defense that allowed just 23 goals in 22 games with four shutouts.  The standout senior was also an All-New England honoree in 2006 and played in 83 games for the Wildcats during his imprssive four year career.

Gliniecki earned second team all conference accoladed after posting nine goals and five assists fir 22 points on the year.  For his career, Gliniecki appeared in 75 games, scoring 18 goals with 15 asists for 15 points.

Johnson & Wales finished the season with a 14-5-3 overall record and a 9-1 record in the GNAC, good for second place in the regular season.  After capturing the conference championship with a 2-1 overtime win on the road against Norwich, the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 overtime decision against Western New England in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships.

JWU Men’s Soccer Falls To WNEC, 2-1 In Overtime In NCAA Championship

Springfield, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team was eliminated from the 2007 NCAA Division III Championship with a 2-1 overtime loss against Western New England on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Johnson & Wales took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) fired home his ninth goal of the season in the 50th minute with an assist from senior forward Barry Phillips (West Glover, Vt).  With time running out, the Golden Bears knotted the game when junior midfielder Tony Rosa (Ludlow, Mass.) scored off a corner kick in the 87th minute with an assist from junior Kevin Zimbal (Guilderland, N.Y.).  Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

Senior forward Mike Stewart (Springfield, Mass.) put a direct free kick from 30 yards out into the box where it was headed in by junior Dan Hare (Staatsburg, N.Y.) just 2:11 into overtime to give WNEC the 2-1 victory.

Freshman goalie Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made four saves for JWU while senior goalkeeper Steve Hennessey (Essex Junction, Vt.) stopped two shots for the Golden Bears in the victory.

With the win Western New England improves to 15-5-2 while Johnson & Wales wraps up the 2007 campaign with a 14-5-3 record.

JWU Men’s Soccer Earns Bid To NCAA Division III Championship
November 5, 2007

Providence, R.I. The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team has earned a bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship, announced by the committee on Monday afternoon.  The Wildcats will travel to former Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Western New England on Wednesday, November 7th at 11:00 a.m.  The winner will advance to the second round where they will take on Amherst on Saturday, November 10th.

Johnson & Wales is currently 14-4-3 overall and captured their fourth GNAC Championship during the last six years with a 2-1 overtime victory against Norwich on the road on Saturday to earn the conference’s automatic bid.

Junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 GNAC Championship after leading the Wildcats to the title.  He currently leads the team in scoring with 13 goals and four assists for 30 points.  Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) was named a first team All-GNAC performer and has eight goals  and six assists for 22 points.  Fellow senior Joel Reynolds (Quakertown, Pa.) was also a first team All-GNAC performer and anchored a JWU defense that allowed just 29 goals in 21 games with four shutouts.  Senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) was a second team all conference performer and is second on the team in scoring with nine goals and five assists fir 22 points.  Freshman goalkeeper Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) has posted a 1.32 goals against average and a .707 save percentage on the year with three shutouts.

Johnson & Wales and WNEC are tied 9-9 in the all-time series between the two schools, including a 2-1 overtime win on Nov. 5th, 2005.  That year the Wildcats dropped a 1-0 decision against Union in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.


Johnson & Wales Men’s Soccer Captures 2007 GNAC Championship
November 3, 2007                                                                              

Northfield, Vt. – Junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) was named the Most Valuable Player after leading the Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory against Norwich in the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on the road on Saturday afternoon.  The win is the fourth GNAC Championship for the Wildcats in the last six years and earns the team a bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III Championship.

Johnson &The Wildcats got on the board just before halftime when Schenzel but in a pass from sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at the 42:44 mark, making the score 1-0 at the half.

Norwich responded at the 59:25 mark when Kyle Przekaza converted a penalty kick, making the score 1-1.  The two teams then battled for the last 30 minutes with regulation ending in a 1-1 tie.  With 3:31 left in the overtime period, Schenzel fed Kirchner for the game winner giving the Wildcats the 2-1 overtime victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) had eight saves in the victory for Johnson & Wales while Norwich’s Jake Pagragan had four stops in the setback.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 14-4-3 while Norwich falls to 16-3-1 on the year.  A date and opponent for the Wildcats first round NCAA game will be announced tomorrow.

JWU Men’s Soccer Downs Lasell, 4-1 In GNAC Semifinals

Smithfield, R.I. – The #2 seeded Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team posted a 4-1 victory against #3 Lasell in the semifinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship at Bryant University on Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales struck early when senior Barry Phillips (West Glover, Vt.) collected a loose ball in the box and fed a pass to fellow senior Alin Oroszi (Ypsilanti, Mich.) who put in a shot from five yards out give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the 4:01 mark. Junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) gave the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage when he headed in a free kick from sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) at 36:40. Lasell responded quickly, however, and cut at the lead to 2-1 when freshman Joshua Martinez (Milton, Mass.) led a breakaway down the middle of the field and fed a pass to junior Zach Gagne (Somerset, Mass.) who buried a shot into the right corner of the net at the 39:16 mark. JWU took the 2-1 lead into halftime.

JWU controlled the action in the second half and went ahead 3-1 on a goal by sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at 81:35, again on a pass by Flath. The Wildcats then added an insurance goal when Flath played a cross to the top of the box where Phillips collected the ball and blasted it into the corner of the net, giving the Wildcats the 4-1 lead at 83:55. JWU then cruised to the 4-1 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made one save in goal for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Julian Dutton (Madison, Conn.) had nine saves in the setback for Lasell.

With the win, Johnson & Wales is now 13-4-3 while Lasell falls to 10-8. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, November 3rd when they travel to Norwich for the finals of the GNAC championship. Game time is set for 12 noon.

JWU Men’s Soccer Defeats Saint Joseph’s of Maine, 4-3

East Providence, R.I. – Junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in the 85th minute, to lead the Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team to thrilling 4-3 victory against St. Joseph’s of Maine in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon.

JWU got on the board early when senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) put in a shot from 10 yards out at the 6:09 mark to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.  JWU would take the one goal lead into halftime.

St. Joseph’s of Maine knotted the game at the 51:40 mark on a JWU own goal and took the lead after sophomore Andre Cushing (Hampden, Mass.) went on a breakaway and put in a shot from five yards out, giving the Monks the 2-1 lead at the 52:49 mark.  The Monks took the 3-1 advantage at 71:44 when freshman Matt Zinchuk (Bethel, Maine) headed in a throw-in from junior Lane Hubacz (Mapleville, R.I.).  The Wildcats responded quickly, however when Schenzel notched his first goal of the game after a corner kick by Gliniecki, making the score 3-2 at 76:53.  Less than a minute later, JWU would tie the game when Schenzel led a breakaway and fed a pass to sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) who put a shot into the lower right corner of the goal, making the score 3-3 at 77:46.  The Wildcats continued to control the action down the stretch before Schenzel headed in a throw in by sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at the 85:53 mark, giving JWU the 4-3 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made one save in goal for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Cory Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) had five saves in the setback for St. Joseph’s.

With the win, Johnson & Wales is now 12-4-3 while St. Joseph’s of Maine falls to 5-11. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 31st when they host the semifinals of the GNAC Championship at Bryant University.

JWU Men’s Soccer Upends Emmanuel, 3-0
October 24, 2007

Boston, Mass. --  Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory against Emmanuel on the road on Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first half, Sousa put JWU on the board first with an unassisted goal at the 50:13 mark.  The Wildcats added to their lead when Sousa fed a pass to junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) at 73:42.  Senior Alin Oroszi (Ypsilanti, Mich.) capped off the scoring for the evening at the 79:38 mark as JWU cruised to the 3-0 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made four saves in the shutout victory for Johnson & Wales while Carlos Perez had eight stops for Emmanuel.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 11-4-3 overall and 9-1 in the GNAC while Emmanuel falls to 5-10, 3-8 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, October 28th when they hose Emerson in the GNAC quarterfinals, starting at 1:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Defeats Emerson, 5-2
October 20, 2007

Boston, Mass. –  Senior Barry Phillips (West Glover, Vt.) scored a hat-trick to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team to a 5-2 victory against Emerson in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats got on the board first when Phillips notched an unassisted goal at the 11:51 mark.  After Emerson knotted the game at 1-1 in the 27th minute, JWU controlled the action the remainder of the first half, taking a 2-1 lead on a goal by senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) at the 37:00 mark and headed into halftime with a 3-1 advantage when fellow senior Alin Oroszi (Ypsilanti, Mich.) scored at the 41:44 mark.

Emerson cut the lead to 3-2 at the 54:31 mark on a goal by Will Sagar.  The Wildcats then controlled the action for the remainder if the game when Phillips scored his second goal of the game at 65:16 and completed the hat trick with a goal at 73:58 to lead JWU to the 5-2 victory.

Johnson & Wales goalie Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) and sophomore Chris Vasquez (Nashua, N.H.) ended the game with 2 saves in the victory while Jonas Imbert had 11 stops in the setback for Emerson.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 10-4-3 overall and 8-1 in the GNAC while Emerson falls to 10-7, 3-7 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 24th when they travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC contest at 8:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Upends Bridgewater State, 2-1 in OT

East Providence, R.I. – Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal 7:53 into overtime to give he Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory against Bridgewater State in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats struck first when junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) put in a cross from sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) at the 33:39 mark to give JWU the 1-0 lead.  JWU took the one goal lead into the second half before sophomore Peter Wahlgren (Shrewsbury, Mass.) headed in a corner kick from freshman Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.) at 71:39.  The two teams then battled through the final 18 minutes of overtime to end regulation tied 1-1.

Sousa the provided the game-winner at the 97:07 mark, collecting his own rebounded shot in the box, giving the Wildcats the 2-1 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made seven saves in goal in the victory for Johnson & Wales while senior Drew Pontbriand (Fairhaven, Mass.) had five stops in net for Bridgewater State.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 9-4-3 while Bridgewater State falls to 5-8-2 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 20th when they travel to Emerson for a GNAC contest at 2:45 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Knocks Down Suffolk, 4-1

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team posted a 4-1 victory against Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Suffolk got on the board first when junior Pierre-Yves N’Goran (Abibjan, Ivory Coast) took the ball from a JWU defender and went on a breakaway down the middle of the field before putting a shot into the corner of the net to give the Rams a 1-0 lead just 1:06 into the game.  Johnson & Wales responded at the 18:18 mark when sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) led a breakaway and fellow senior Barry Phillips (West Glover, Vt.) put it in the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1.  The two teams would head into halftime with a tied score.
 
The Wildcats struck early in the second half when Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) put in a cross from Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) at the 48:24 mark, giving JWU the 2-1 advantage.  JWU junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) then scored on a breakaway at the 71:52 mark before Gliniecki capped off the scoring with an assist from Philips at 86:15 to give the Wildcats the 4-1 victory

JWU Men’s Soccer Blanks Saint Joseph’s of Maine, 7-0

East Providence, R.I. – Senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) scored four goals to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team to an impressive 7-0 shutout victory against Saint Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Glinecki got JWU on the board early when he converted a penalty kick to give the team a 1-0 lead at the 8:50 mark.  His second goal of the game came on a free kick from 20 yards out to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage at the 29:38 mark.  JWU added a third first half goal when junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) headed in a cross from sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.), making the score 3-0 at 36:15.  JWU took the three goal lead into halftime.

The Wildcats continued their offensive explosion early in the second half when senior Joel Reynolds (Middletown, Pa.) put in a corner kick from Flath, making the score 4-0 at the 47:20 mark.  Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) then headed in a throw in from sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at 49:43 to give the Wildcats the 5-0 advantage.  A pair of goals by Gliniecki, first at 53:26 and then at 79:10 would cap off the scoring for the afternoon as JWU cruised to the 7-0 victory.

JWU Men’s Soccer Falls to MIT, 5-2
October 11, 2007

East Providence, R.I. –The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer squad dropped a 5-2 decision against MIT in a non-conference game at Pierce Stadium on Thursday evening.

Junior Neil Zimmerman (Dallas, Texas) scored a goal and added two assists to pace MIT in the victory.  The Engineers got on the board first when junior Andrew Bishara (Toledo, Ohio) headed in a throw-in from Zimmerman at the 18:42 mark.  After another Zimmerman throw in, freshman Christian Therkelsen (Nesbru, Norway) put in a shot from five yards out to give MIT the 2- 0advantage at 19:55.  Zimmerman then had another throw in into the box that deflected into the goal to give MIT the 3-0 lead at 22:02.  The Engineers capped off the scoring for the first half after an own goal by the Wildcats, making the score 4-0 after the first half.

Johnson & Wales responded early in the second half when junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) headed in a cross from sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at the 55:24 mark.  The Wildcats then cut the lead to 4-2 when senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) converted a penalty kick at 75:07.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Zimmerman added an insurance goal at the 79:35 mark to give MIT the 5-2 victory.

Freshman Michael Gentile (Holden, Mass.) made two saves and sophomore Chris Limerick (Middletown, N.Y.) made three stops in goal for Johnson & Wales while junior Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, Pa.) notched four saves in the win for MIT.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 6-4-3 while MIT is 6-4-1.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 13th when they host St. Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Upends Albertus Magnus, 1-0

New Haven, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer squad posted a 1-0 win over Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half until the 37:49 mark before Johnson & Wales got on the board when sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) put a corner kick into the box where junior Nick O’Rourke (Medway, Mass.) put a shot into the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead. JWU would then hold on for the 1-0 victory.

Freshman Michael Gentile (Holden, Mass.) made five saves in goal in the victory for Johnson & Wales while Gerald O’Connor had two stops in the setback for the Falcons.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 6-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 7-7-1 on the season and 3-3 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, October 11th when they host MIT in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Downs Mt. Ida, 3-1
October 3, 2007

Newton, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team posted a 3-1 victory against Mt. Ida in a non-conference contest on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats got it rolling midway through the first half with 24:38 remaining on a breakaway by senior Brian Souza (Providence, R.I.). Souza got through the defense on a through ball beating the Mustangs keeper on the bottom right corner making it 1-0. JWU would add a second goal with 13:51 left in the first when junior Nick O’Rourke (Medway, Mass.) headed a ball into the top left corner of the net, making the score 2-0. Mt. Ida would respond, however with 6:13 left in the first half on goal by junior Matt Gill (Winnfield, Kan.) making the score 2-1 at halftime.

Johnson and Wales pulled away late in the second half coming off a through ball by Sousa that sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) converted into a goal by rocketing one past the Mustangs keeper for the 3-1 lead that would hold up for the victory.
Johnson & Wales goalie Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) ended the game with 2 saves while Brian Leighton left with six for the Mustangs.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 5-2-3 overall and 4-0 in the GNAC while Mt. Ida falls to 6-4-1 on the season, 2-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 6th when they host Norwich in a GNAC contest at 3:00 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Upends Lasell, 3-1

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer squad notched a 3-1 victory against Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) took a cross from junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) on a breakaway and buried a shot into the back of the net to give JWU the lead at the 19:37 mark.  With time winding down in the first half, the Wildcats capitalized on a Lasell foul and sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) put a free kick into the box where senior Barry Phillips headed it in to give the squad a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Lasell cut into the lead early in the second half when sophomore Armen Billian (Worcester, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal at the 60:1 mark to make the score 2-1.  JWU responded, however as Kirchner picked up a loose ball in front of the net and fed junior Nick O’Rourke (Medway, Mass.) who capped off the scoring for the day at the 75:25 mark, giving the Wildcats the 3-1 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made two saves in goal in the victory for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Julian Dutton (Madison, Conn.) had three stops in net for Lasell.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now undefeated in their last five games and improves to 4-2-3 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC while Lasell falls to 4-5 on the season, 2-1 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 3rd when they travel to Mt. Ida for a GNAC contest at 3:30 p.m.

JWU Men’s Soccer Plays Fitchburg State to 1-1 Tie

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team notched a 1-1 double overtime tie against Fitchburg State in a non-conference contest on the road on Thursday evening.

Johnson & Wales got on the board early when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick and senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) converted it to give the team a 1-0 lead just 4:01 into the game. JWU would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Fitchburg State would knot the game at 1-1 early in the second half on an own goal at the 53:13 mark. That would be the only scoring for the evening, however as both teams played through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods for the 1-1 tie.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) posted 2 saves in goal for Johnson & Wales Fitchburg State’s Matthew Carey had six stops.

With the tie Johnson & Wales is now 3-2-3 while Fitchburg State is 2-4-1 on the eason. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, September 29th when they host Lasell in a GNAC contest at 1:00 p.m.

The two teams battled through the first half and entered halftime knotted at a 0-0 tie, despite JWU having an 11-1 advantage in shots.

JWU dominated play again in the second half and got on the board at the 75:37 mark when sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) blasted in a shot from 25 yards out. That would be all the scoring for the afternoon, however, as the Wildcats took the 1-0 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) was untested in goal in the victory for Johnson & Wales while Craig Van Tuyl (Buffalo, N.Y.) had eight stops in net for Daniel Webster.

JWU Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Rivier, 7-3
September 22, 2007

Nashua, N.Y. – Junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) tallied a hat-trick to lead Johnson & Wales to a 7-3 victory against Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) tallied a goal just five minutes into the contest. The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by senior Joel Reynolds (Middletown, Pa.) at the 8:00 mark and led 3-0 after 15:00 on an own goal by Rivier. After Rivier’s Chris Nugent cut the lead to 3-1 at the 20:00 mark, Schenzel scored the first of his three goals to put JWU ahead 4-1 after 32:00 of play. The Wildcats would take the 4-2 lead into halftime.
The Wildcats dominated play in the second half as Schenzel had a pair of goals and senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) added an unassisted tally to give JWU the 7-3 victory.

JWU Men’s Soccer Plays Framingham State to 1-1 Tie
September 17, 2007

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men’s soccer team posted a 1-1 tie against Framingham State in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Monday afternoon.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half before Johnson & Wales got on the board when a Framingham State defender put in an own goal, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the 39:34 mark. The visiting Rams responded quickly, however, when freshman Joel Kayima (Malden, Mass.) put in a pass from fellow rookie Jason Silva (Milford, Mass.) at 41:10 to tie the score at 1-1.

Johnson & Wales controlled the action in the second half, recording a 5-2 advantage in shots, but regulation would end tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of play. In the two overtime periods, each team had scoring opportunities, but neither capitalized as the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made four saves for Johnson & Wales while Framingham State’s Eddie Palomba (Saugus, Mass.) had eight stops.

JWU Men’s Soccer Falls to RIC, 2-1, in OT Thriller
September 13, 2007

East Providence, R.I. – Sophomore Ryan Kelley (Hope, R.I.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to give Rhode Island College a 2-1 victory against Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Joel Reynolds (Middletown, Pa.) put Johnson & Wales on the board early when he blasted in a shot from five yards out, giving the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage just 5:01 into the contest. Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) each had an assist on the goal.

Rhode Island College responded at the 37:00 mark when Kelley knotted the game at 1-1 on a free kick from 30 yards out. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime and the two teams battled through a scoreless second half to finish regulation knotted 1-1. Midway through the first overtime period, RIC was awarded a free kick that was taken by junior Josh Silva (Dartmouth, Mass.). Silva lofted a ball into the box where Kelley headed it in for the game-winner at 98:45.

Sophomore Chris Vasquez (Nashua, N.H.) made seven saves for Johnson & Wales while RIC’s Jadon Neves (Warren, R.I.) had eight saves in the win.
