March 28, 2008

East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales softball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header against Mount Ida at Pierce Field on Friday afternoon.  Mount Ida took a 12-2 win in the opener and wrapped up the day with a 14-5 victory in the nightcap.

Mount Ida jumped out to an early lead in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  The Mustangs pulled ahead in the top of the fourth when a three run home run by junior Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, Mass.) put the team up 7-0.  Kwasek’s second three run home run of the game in the top of the fifth helped propel Mount Ida to the 12-2 victory.  Kwasek was 3-for-4 with two runs and seven RBI while freshman Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, Vt.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the victory.  Senior Kerry Cotter (Nashua, N.H.) was 3-for-3 for JWU while freshman Christine Casareale (Middletown, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI in the setback for the Wildcats.

In the nightcap, Mount Ida used a two run single by freshman Kiley Jean (North Monmouth, Maine) to take an early 3-0 lead.  JWU responded in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Cotter and sophomore Kristyn Galante (Northborough, Mass.) to cut the lead to 3-2.  Mount Ida responded with four runs in the top of the second, including a two run single by Kwasek and the team added four more in the top of the third to pull ahead 11-2.  A two run single by freshman Kris Duplisea (Chicopee, Mass.) put the Mustangs ahead 14-2.  Johnson & Wales cut the lead to 14-5 in the bottom of the fourth after a two run home run by junior Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven, Conn.).  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Mount Ida took the 14-5 victory.  Sophomore Katie Lorenco (Mattapoisett, Mass.) was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI in the win for the Mustangs.  Griffiths was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI while Cotter was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the loss for JWU.
